A street cleaner struck gold when he found a Rolex watch down a drain.

The 28-year-old was cleaning a drain near Chalkwell railway station in Essex last Friday when he found the watch among the dirt.

When he took a closer look, he found it was an 18-carat gold Rolex worth £21,000.

The worker, who does not wish to be named, handed the watch in at his nearest police station.

But it had not been registered lost or stolen and, if it is not claimed within 30 days, he will be allowed to keep it.

Pc Calley Mackay, of Essex Police, said: "This was a highly unusual find and it's hard to imagine how something so valuable has not been reported lost or stolen by its owner.

"If you recognise it and believe it may be yours, please contact me.

"However, through the serial number we do know a little about the watch's origins and will thoroughly check any claim to ownership, so only honest people need apply."

The watch is a yellow gold Rolex Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph from the Daytona collection.

Pc Mackay can be contacted at Southend police station on 101.

They guy who owned it prolly has newer ones on his autowinder, and tossed the old one out the window of his Bentley, since he didn't want anyone to see him out trading in his watch for cash.

"I say, did you see George in Tisson's on Tuesday?"
'No, what? Pray tell!"
"Well, you know, he was, oh, how shall I put it?
He was reduced to selling back his Rolex for cash!"
'No! Not George, may G-d rest his soul, the poor sot!"

Some of these suggestions are good common sense.

Others, like watching out for cash coffee buyers, remind me of j. edgar hoover insisting that dangerous commies are everywhere!

The council will probably auction it off - or present it to the chief executive on his retirement.

I hope he gets to keep it for being honest. Unfortunately, in this economic climate it seems that only the crooked and dishonest are on the up and up.

It's mine, and my other watch is a Casio.

Unfortunately "finders keepers" doesn't actually work. If you find an item in the streets and you keep it without attempting to find the owner, it could be classed as theft by finding.

Since the Rolex has serial numbers, there was a possibility that the watch was reported stolen or missing and any attempt of selling it to a somewhat reputable dealer could have resulted in prosecution.

I'm glad to see there are still honest people out there, many people would have pocketed the watch and tried to sell it on for as much cash as possible. I hope the finder of the watch gets rewarded by either the rightful owner or if he is lucky he gets to keep the watch.

Wow really thats real in the UK theft by finding.....no finders keepers for you guys....
23:21 on 14/02/2012
Really hope he gets to keep it and the council doesn't try to claim it, they would probably give him a verbal warning for not handing it in to the depot, if he had he certainly wouldn't see it again, one of the fat cat councillors would be wearing it before the end of day

Must have slipped off of a passing banker slithering in the gutter; they're all snakes.

You must be one of those losers who keep having a go at the bankers. Get a job, work hard, earn your own money and be responsible for your own destiny.

You must be kidding with this comment You are a fool if you think working hard is going to help much with your destiny.
18:15 on 15/02/2012
No, I'm not any of the things you said. Why you should think so says more about you than it does about me.
21:36 on 14/02/2012
I really hope he gets to keep it. The owner would no doubt have had it insured and would have made a claim by now. If not, tough luck - finders, keepers.
20:43 on 14/02/2012
Good he did take it to a police station and not just hand it in at the depot.

I'll be surprised if the Council don't try to make a claim on the watch should no one else come forward after 30 days.

Anything put into a refuse bin automatically becomes the property of the Local Authority once the contents of a bin has been transfered into a refuse collection vehicle. The same applies to items found in sewers and drains unless reported or claimed.

Still a few honest people out there!

I had a very upsetting case some years ago as a Housing Manager. One of my tenants went into an abandoned property and took the very nasty greasy carpet, better than he had and was in the process of cleaning it when Police arrived and correctly arrested him for theft, the carpet became the property of the LA when the prop was abandoned.
I asked plod to ignore the offence as the carpet was going to be sent to the tip, the brave plod wanted a prosecution (and win) so the poor guy got prosecuted and convicted.
I turned up in court ion a pair of rag ass jeans and a t shirt saying ,m support your local copper, with a picture of a copper with a noose andme woddling as I held his feet and my lass tickling me with a feather

It's mine! I dropped it while exchanging my Timex!
20:52 on 14/02/2012
You did not! You're telling lies. That's my watch. I remember going to London to drop it down a drain, but I had a white suit on and didn't want to get it dirty, and by the time I went back for it a street cleaner had found it.
01:37 on 15/02/2012
I leftg my sundial around there some time ago,
19:50 on 14/02/2012
Really hope he gets to keep it, for being honest enough to hand it in in the first place. Good man.
