Blizzards are set to hit parts of the UK over the weekend, forecasters have warned.

A mixture of snow and high winds will affect the north and west coasts of Scotland, with showers moving further inland.

The Met Office has issued yellow "be aware" warnings of snow for Orkney and Shetland, the Highlands, Grampian, Strathclyde, Tayside, Fife and central Scotland.

The severe conditions are expected to move in from around 9am tomorrow until midnight.

Strathclyde, south west Scotland, the Lothians and Borders, Wales, Northern Ireland and the North West of England have also been warned of ice for tomorrow and Sunday.

Stephen Davenport, a senior meteorologist with MeteoGroup, the weather division of the Press Association, said: "A blizzard is snow with winds of 25mph or more, and we are looking at 30mph-35mph in exposed areas and 50mph-60mph gusts. These will mainly affect Caithness and Sutherland and eastern Aberdeenshire.

"The snow will struggle to get through to Glasgow but there will be some showers.

"There will be a few centimetres in places further north at the Moray Firth and down the coast along western Galloway.

"With the cold front coming south during Saturday, wet surfaces will turn cold and then into ice. That will begin to die off on Sunday morning, with milder conditions moving in."

The Met Office website said northern and western coastal fringes would see between 2in (5cm) and 4in (10cm) of snow, with 6in (15cm) likely over higher ground.

It said: "Snow showers will become frequent and heavy at times over much of northern and north west Scotland, including the Grampians, during Saturday.

"In addition, gale-force winds will result in temporary blizzard conditions and drifting over higher ground. The public should be aware that this is likely to cause disruption."

Police have asked motorists to be aware of the conditions they are driving in and to check routes before setting off.

Here, in north east Scotland we haven't even seen a flurry of snow yet this winter so if tomorrow brings a wee blizzard so be it, it is winter after all. At the moment, for the 7th day in a row the sun's shining brightly.

"A mixture of snow and high winds will affect the north and west coasts of Scotland, with showers moving further inland"
Your picture shows a "Cross Country" train but their routes don't go into the area you mention and according to the article ""The snow will struggle to get through to Glasgow but there will be some showers"

No they're not breaking any statutory laws, as you well know, they're annoying their readers possibly but that's all but as I said it's good for laugh.

Brace yourselves Britain.......yet again. Oh only in parts of Scotland is it?
Stop this ridiculous, deliberate, incessant, deceitful, sensationalism you insist on practicing, have you no shame? Give us true and accurate facts, your customers would appreciate it I'm sure. However I admit AOL are good for a laugh at times just wish I was laughing with you rather than at you.

It's only to attract attention to adverts, if they said "Britain in for a pretty non-descript weekend of weather" as is the case, then nobody would open the story. I just like reading people's comments, the stories are always rubbish.

I see what you mean but there are no "adverts" that I noticed, the headline attracted me read the article and having registered the inane content of it I proceeded to post my criticism of it. If as you say it's purpose was to " only to attract attention to adverts" it failed in it's objective and only achieved, from the majority of comments, complaints and ridicule. I understand that advertisers would complain if an effort was not made to draw readers to a particular page but to achieve it via deceit is unnecessary, easy yes but unnecessary.
