Brian May On Adam Lambert Performing With Queen? 'Freddie Would Have Approved'

Queen Adam Lambert

Queen rocker Brian May is adamant late legend Freddie Mercury would give singer Adam Lambert the "seal of approval" as the flamboyant star prepares to front the band at an upcoming festival.

The former American Idol contestant will perform in Mercury's place when Queen headline the Sonisphere festival in Knebworth over the summer.

And guitarist May insists the band's iconic star, who passed away in 1991, would be happy with their latest addition.

He says: "Judging by my incoming mail, this decision will make a lot of people very happy. It's a worthy challenge for us, and I'm sure Adam would meet with Freddie's approval! And what better place to revisit, and walk those emotional paths than Knebworth? It will be a rush."

And Lambert admits he can't wait to get on stage with his heroes, adding: "I'm completely in awe of the Queen phenomenon. The thought of sharing the stage for a full set is so beautifully surreal. I'm honoured to be able to pay my respects to Freddie's memory. He's a personal hero of mine and I am deeply grateful for the chance to sing such powerful music for fans of this legendary band. I know the evening will be a huge milestone for me, and with the support of Brian, Roger (Taylor, drummer) and the rest of the band I know magic will be on display."

Lambert previously performed with the surviving members of Queen at the MTV European Music Awards in November.

There is only one Freddy and no one will replace him! Growing up in England, I watched Queen live and I will never forget it. When I watch Marc Martel, all I see is a good singer who is trying to sing Freddy note for note to a point where he really does sound like Freddy. Where is the creativity in that?

Whoever it is to sing with Queen at Knebworth, I want to listen to a band with great songs with a singer who can bring their interpretation of the songs that Freddy would be proud of. And that's what Brian and Roger see in Adam Lambert and why they selected him rather than a brilliant copycat singer.

Adam LAMEbert is a dreadful shrieker and Freddie will be rolling in his grave.

The reality is that for a fan nobody will 'feel right' when it comes to trying to fill Freddie Mercury's shoes. Personally, I have stopped paying attention to all the sheenanigans happening with and around Brian May and Roger Taylor.

True though it may be that "The Show Must Go On" and even if 'Freddie would have approved', to me all those incarnations are not Queen. Queen is/was/forever will be Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon.

Perfect.

It's odd to see people wanting someone who can merely replicate Freddie's voice and not someone who embodies his spirit of flamboyance and theatrics the way Adam does. Adam has an amazing voice but on top of the voice he also has a love of the same OTT performance style that Freddie loved so much.

The reality is Brian and Roger knew Freddie and if they say he'd approve then he'd approve and fans really don't have a right to second guess their decision.

"freddie would approve"? who wants to be replaced?

Who wants to die either? I'm sure Freddie would want to be remembered though, and this gig will help to make that happen in the long term.

Adam is amazingly talented and an unreal entertainer. His range is not to be believed and his tone is sublime. He mesmerizes and transports people through his music. He is a gift.

He is ADAM, not Freddie, and that is a good thing.

No one, and I mean NO ONE can replace Freddie.

I think most people would agree with you including Adam Lambert. Funny for a group that is now highly thought off it was not so when Freddie was alive. Only when one hears other singers attempt his songs that you realize how good he truly was. I do think Lambert is a very capable singer and it will be interesting to see what he does with the material.

Apparently you weren't around when Queen was at their height. They were, at their time, one of the biggest groups in the world. Do a Google search for Queen and concerts and see just how many people were there. Just like how Sammy Hagar ruined Van Halen, Adam Lambert will ruin Queen.

true enough, but this will be honestly awesome homage. A perfect fit and a great opportunity to hear this classic music LIVE once more.

I totally disagree. His singing does not meet the standards that Freddie had IMO. Adam obviously couldn't make it as a solo artist.

The Marcel guy sounds like Mercury BUT they want a replacement and not a clone. I think it's better to have Lambert and let him do things his way

I REALLY want to see a show where they use the singer, Mika in Freddie's place. Despite his lack of quality material, he's the closest I've heard to the immense talent that was Freddie Mercury.

If you've never heard him, please check out the chorus from this song of his:

Lambert has a good voice, however nobody NOBODY comes as close to Freddy Mercury than MARC MARTEL.

You are so right! Marc Martel would be the best option.

True. Lambert has an excellent velvety voice but it misses Freddie's growly lows and adds a too technically refined quality (for Queen music) in the highs.
With Marc, that's about as close you can get to Freddy and maybe that is the reason why he was passed over.
It might be Queen wanted to explore a different feeling, but in doing so the music sounds too refined with Lambert.

Marc Martel sounds the closest to Freddie. However, that's why he is in the tribute band. Adam Lambert fits so well with Brian and Roger. He has a style of his own and will do wonderful with the songs. He won't try to copy Freddie but will put his own spin on the songs. This should be a great concert as Adam has a wonderful vocal range. Should be interesting.
