Emma Harrison, millionaire boss of a welfare-to-work firm has quit as the Prime Minister's "Family Champion" after allegations of fraud.

Emma Harrison said she did not want the police investigation probe, which has seen four ex-members of A4e staff arrested, to distract from the Government's efforts to help vulnerable families.

"I have asked to step aside from my voluntary role as Family Champion as I do not want the current media environment to distract from the very important work with troubled families," she said in a statement.

"I remain passionate about helping troubled families and I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute in an area where I have been active for many years."

David Cameron handed Harrison the unpaid role of getting families back into work in December 2010.
Two police investigations are under way after irregularities were referred by the firm to the Department for Work and Pensions.

A4e said yesterday that two cases of nine referred to the DWP remained outstanding.

One, being handled by Thames Valley Police, involves four former members of staff and a second, also being investigated by police, involves a subcontractor.

Shadow work and pensions secretary Liam Byrne said: "Emma Harrison has done the right thing. But this is not the end - it's the start of the real questions about the Government's back to work contracts which are costing millions but are simply not getting enough people into jobs."

Mrs Hodge has led criticism of A4e over large payouts to Ms Harrison and other bosses despite what she said was an "abysmal" performance record.

Its five shareholders were paid £11 million in dividends last year, of which Ms Harrison received 87%, her committee was told this month.

She said that was excessive given that all the firm's £160-£180 million UK turnover last year came from Government contracts.

She questioned the granting of contracts to A4e under the new Work Programme in light of what she said was an "abysmal" delivery of the previous Pathways to Work scheme.

Government ministers have insisted that the type of fraud being investigated could no longer happen under new welfare programmes.

Mr Cameron announced Ms Harrison's appointment in a December 2010 speech in which he praised her "proven track record of turning lives around".

"Her approach is the complete opposite of the impersonal, one-size-fits-all approach that has failed so many families - which is why I have asked her to come on board to help us," he said.

He said she would lead on the use of funding to help 500 troubled families across the country.

In September last year, Mr Cameron visited A4e's offices in Brixton, south London, where he met Work Programme participants and advisers.

The DWP decided there was no "malpractice" involved in the other cases, according to the company.

Cameron has called for a "thorough" investigation of the cases. "It needs to get to the truth and then we can take into account its findings," he told MPs.

Earlier this month, Harrison warned highly-vulnerable households risked being harmed by the Government's "populist" benefit cap.

It now seems that this womans company was already being investigated for fraud before dodgy Dave appointed her. The frightening thing is this man is running the country and telling the rest of us what to do, if this is what his judgement is like then there is no hope for the NHS when he says it will be much better. GOd help us all.

I would like a day in the Head Office looking at 'the books' and studying their methodology.

may be the whole company of A4e should be looked into. Making a profit from the most vulnerable.

It goes on in all the offices.

Another classic of Camorons good judgement of character. I wonder if she will be made to pay back the millions she has fiddled from the tax payer or will Camoron and Gideon write it off. this government is so corrupt they do not know what to do next to exploit the honest hard working people of this country

Perhaps now people will begin to wake up to the true nature of "welfare reform" and the kind of people who are at the centre of it.
Liam Byrne trying to claim innocence is nothing short of a joke as it was his government and their "friends" who allowed A4E to flourish whilst creating despair for the sick and disabled and victims of inequality.
Liam Byrne; is a manipulative and dishonest man.
I'm so glad that this has happened. ATOS; will no doubt be next.
The problem is a lot of people in modern britain believe Daily Mail headlines and those are lies along with government rhetoric. Only around 0.5% of benefit claims are fraudulent according to government figures. Criminalizing and marginalizing the sick and vulnerable in order to make money for corrupt and self interested politicians IS NOT OK.
There's a saying: "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere."
Westminster has shown itself for what it is. Liars and cheats and a privileged few who believe everyone else simply didn't try as hard or work as hard as they did.
Privilege brings its own assumption of arrogance towards those did not have those same opportunities. A lack of humanity.

so would you if you got 87% pay rise totalling almost 8.5m for doing nothing.nice job if you can get it or be one of the croonies of cameron.will she be asked to give the money back no not on your nelly she will get away with it.one wonders how she got for leaving probably another few million.severance pay as she cannot be replaced she was so gooooooooood at her job.she is no better than the rest of the greedy pigs.actually i know someone who used to vie for government contracts to put people into work but i guess it was nothing on this scale although i did hear from other work mates he was coining it and very well off since he started this business.you put someone into work and they have to stay in that job for six weeks in order for you and the company to get paid from the government.the government contract states you have to place so many people into jobs before the end of the contract.so after six weeks if the leave or work shy and dont stay its back to square one.i think the idea was great but what was wrong it was open to abuse.so maybe this was similar or maybe something totally different.anyway she sounds dodgy to me so demand it back the greedy moo

Expect more of the same as private companies vie for Health contracts to compete with (and destroy) the NHS. Just like private companies have a 'Stranglehold' on our 'Public' Utilities.
07:32 PM on 02/24/2012
....There won't be any competition, the contracts are just waiting to be signed.

I always wonder how many people could resist all the dodgy dealings offered once placed in a position of power. I have seen eager people enter politics with enthusiasm and a real need to make a positive difference to the country.
Then it all goes wrong. Before you know it ,they are as bent as the rest of them.Do they get caught up in the world of backhanders and perks, losing their own sense of right or wrong.
Or does one HAVE to be a thief and a scoundrel to even consider entering the world of politics?
I would not trust any of them and yet here they are running the country and it's finances.
What is the solution?

You would certainly be right in wanting to have it paid back, assuming she is guilty. After all that money came from us. However I doubt it, It will be well salted away somewhere. I can't believe that she paid herself that amount of money and no one noticed!!

I would never trust any one in high places, they are all thievs that is why tthey get the jobs, they are all rotten to the core, the lower class stole to survive it would be classed as a capital offence but they steal millions and it`s a mistake. roll on the revolution.!!!
