The comedy world is in mourning today following the death of Frank Carson at the age of 85.

Famous for his non-stop joking - and his inimitable laugh - the Belfast-born comedian passed away at home after battling cancer. In a statement, his family said Carson was a "husband, father, Gaga and comedian" who had "set off for his final gig today".

"He went peacefully at his home in Blackpool surrounded by his greatest fans - his extended family. We will be taking him home to Belfast to lay him to rest and celebrate his joyful life. It's quieter down here now. God help them up there!"

Tributes have been pouring in on Twitter - not just from fellow comedians and showbiz performers, but also from ordinary folk who had a Carson story to share, or joke to recount. Below is just a selection. RIP Frank. It wasn't just the way you told them.

God seems to be putting together quite a staggering Variety bill at the moment.
We have truely lost a National Treasure. May you have peace in between shows Frank dear freind.

Seen him in hospital 2 weeks before his death, he looked frail and gaunt and said the doctor had given him 2 weeks to live, he asked the doctor if he could have the first week in July and the last week in August

Lovely man, a REAL star. Wasn't always on telly and in magazines crying about his 'difficult' background and his 'struggles' with alcohol/depression/drugs or whatever his problems may or may not have been ..... he came from a generation that just accepted adversity and got on with it.
He appealed to real people who weren't stressing about what was politically correct. He always said he wanted everyone to like him ..... the IRA, the UDF, catholics, protestants and all nationalities.
We need more like him in this day and age and perhaps there wouldn't be so much hatred and wars in the world.
Well done Frank I'll miss you.
