Baroness Tonge, Lib Dem Peer, Criticised For Saying 'Israel Will Not Last Forever' (VIDEO)

Baroness Tonge

A Liberal Democrat peer who once said she would consider becoming a suicide bomber if she were Palestinian has been criticised for saying Israel would not "last forever".

Speaking at an event at Middlesex University last Thursday, Baroness Tonge said Israel would one day lose the support of the United States and would then "reap what they have sown".

"Beware Israel," she said. "Israel is not going to be there forever in its present performance. One day the United States of America will get sick of giving £70 billion a year to Israel."

The Lib Dem peer said she thought of Israel as "America's aircraft carrier in the Middle East" but that one day people in the United States would say "enough is enough".

"It will not go on forever, it will not go on forever and Israel will lose its support, then they will reap what they have sown," she added.

In a statement given to the Guido Fawkes website, which first reported the remarks, the Liberal Democrats said Baroness Tonge did "not speak for the party on Israel/Palestine".

"Her presence and comments at this event were extremely ill-advised and ill judged. The tone of the debate at this event was wholly unacceptable and adds nothing to the peace process. The Liberal Democrats are wholehearted supporters of a peaceful two-state solution to the Israel/Palestine issue," the statement added.

In 2010 Baroness Tonge was sacked by Nick Clegg as a health spokesperson for the party after she called for an inquiry into allegations Israeli troops were involved in organ trafficking in Haiti. Clegg said her comments were "wrong, distasteful and provocative".

And she was sacked from the Lib Dem front bench in 2004 after she said she "might just consider" becoming a suicide bomber if she were Palestinian.

Ed Miliband said the Lib Dem leader should condemn the remarks as there was "no place in politics for those who question the existence of the state of Israel".

No place in politics for those who question existence of the state of Israel. Nick Clegg must condemn Jenny Tonge's remark & demand apology

Labour MP Ian Austin told The Guardian that Nick Clegg should make the peer withdraw her comments.

"There is a cross-party consensus that a two-state solution is the only way to bring peace to the Middle East. At the very least, Nick Clegg must make Baroness Tonge withdraw these remarks," he said.

And Baroness Tonge was dismissed as an "irrelevant, siren and marginal voice" by the Liberal Democrat Friends of Israel group.

Well she was able to say it so it is free speech... however others have a right to criticize her for it which is free speech also.. works both ways..

She'll always have the right to Free speech and the right to Stand for Election based on her Freely Stated Positions just as it's her Constituent's Right to Judge her positions by Reelecting her or Not. Also her Lib Dem Colleagues have the Right to Censure her for using their Platform to express Rhetoric Inonsistent with Party Positions regarding for example Suicide Bombers and Libelous unsubstantiated accusations regarding "Organ Transplants" or whatever her Hallucination of the moment. Sounds like the Democracy is working fine,Free Speech and all.

Of course, many know this, but are too afraid to speak out. Baroness Tonge should be commended on her common sense and courage to speak out.

Given the way Israel is conducting themselves, it will not last - and for that we should all thankful.

There are many good people in Israel who have had enough of the far right dictating their every move. Change will come slowly, but it will come and deservedly so.

With the route that Israel is going, the country will not last forever. Now let me note that I do wish that both sides would find a way to live in peace. However, these stupid shows of strength and power against Iran and the acts of holding an iron grip on the Palestinian community is only making the country more enemies. Sure, they may have been able to fight off several countries in the past. However, that was then and this is now in an age with more technological advances in warfare. Israel seems to forget this.

I wouldn't be surprised if Israel will be renamed Palestine within 5-10 years.

Nothing like a deceptive headline eh?!
She DID NOT say "Israel will not last forever", she said "Israel is not going to be there forever by it's present performance". There is a vast difference: she is effectively warning the people of Israel that their far right government has completely isolated themselves from every other country except the US.

This is like the supposed "Wipe Israel off the Map" quote by Ahmadinejad. He was actually refering to something Ayatollah Khomenei said, the direct translation of what he said was: "The Imam said the regime occupying Jerusalem will vanish from the pages of history".

But I suppose that wouldn't make a cracking headline would it?!

Personally, I reckon that all religious states should be brought down. Any state that is founded on religious principals is a state waiting to fail and I include Israel, Saudi and Iran in that. After all, religious states are just another form of apartheid.

I see that even a Liberal Democrat can sound like an Islamist. Or is it that Islamists sound like Liberal Democrats? I can't tell the difference.
