An Italian judge has suspended the identification of eight bodies found last week on board of the Costa Concordia.

The parents of two French teenagers, known only as Mylène and Mickaël, who disappeared on January 13 when the ship was struck after veering too close to the island of Giglio, are said to be "distraught" at the news.

“They have been told that the lawyer of of one of the accused asked for the suspension of the DNA identification of the bodies. The justice agreed. It’s incomprehensible. We are distraught”, said André, the uncle of the siblings.

On 22 February eight bodies were found on one of the passengers’ decks. Of these bodies, only one has been identified as Dayana Arlotti, a five year old girl whose disappearance had provoked much turmoil in Italy.

Dayana's father, William, is still missing. He had a history of health problems, and was said by family to be traveling to celebrate a new lease on life after reportedly receiving a kidney and pancreas transplant.

Furious and exhausted, Mylène and Mickaël’s parents have been on island of Giglio since the tragedy to pressure authorities to accelerate the search for the bodies.

The sea rescue team is still exploring the ship for the seven remaining passengers, but according to the family work is progressing “not quickly enough”.

Meanwhile in France, a support group has been created on Facebook with 2,350 supporters in an attempt to contact journalists and raise awareness. The family has been interviewed on national radio shows, and a petition is circulating with almost 2,000 signatures.

The news came only one day after Italian newspaper La Stampa` leaked new allegations about life on board the Costa Concordia.

One woman, a nurse identified only as Valentina B, who worked with under-fire Concordia skipper Francesco Schettino, claimed he regularly "used women as goods to be bartered with."

She resigned from the company because of the unsustainable professional atmosphere after an official committed suicide in his cabin.

Another former employee, identified only as Mery G, said: "The crew and officers are very superficial when it come to dealing with an emergency. I only worked for Costa for two months in 2010 but a lot of the time officers and crew were drunk.

"At parties a lot of the time we would ask ourselves: If there is an emergency who is going to save the ship?"

Mylene and Mickael’s parents obtained the right to assist to the first hearing of the case this Saturday, which will designate the experts to analyse the ship's black box. The charges against the captain of the Costa Concordia and some members of Costa Crociere will be read out at the hearing.

Schettino’s lawyers declared the captain will not appear at the hearing to maintain public order, and to protect the captain’s security.

Many people had publicly declared they would be present in Grosseto to confront the captain and get some precise answers on what happened that infamous night.

It would appear the lessons of the 'Titanic' have not been learned.

There may well be some "technicality" in Italian law that has lead to this decision. That aside I cannot believe the Italian judiciary have given due weight to the mindless distress the delay in the identification of the bodies has caused the grieving relatives left wondering.Sometimes the unfairness of burocracy leaves me speechless and very angry.

Dear, I am the father of a crew member of the Costa Concordia and I regret the decision of the judges to stop the awards for a procedural technicality. But with the same indignation and regret slanderous rumors circulated by those two "alleged" former members of Costa Cruises. In Italy there is a proverb ...... "ill-used body that makes the thought comes" ...... and given that proverbs are the wisdom of the people ...... I leave you to think about what it means! My daughter works in Costa Crociere to four years, has had five different boarding of ships and never had the problems reported by the two "individuals" that you mentioned in the article, so I would urge you to weigh well that reported in the articles, even for avoid disgracing the name of people who have suffered shipwreck with the passengers, silently doing their duty. Greetings to all. Fabio Melandri

Signor Melandri, thank you for your post and your support for the distressed families left hurting by this difficult to comprehend decision. There will be many more accusations, assertions and statements about historical incidents that are alleged to have taken place on this company's ships before this dreadful accident is concluded. Because your daughter never witnessed such untoward incidents does not mean they never happened. That many of the crew on the Costa Concordia acted bravely and selflessly is also not in dispute and crew members who died in the incident are every bit as much a loss to their families as the dead passengers are to their loved ones. In times such as these it is best to keep one's own counsel and await the outcome of the inquiry and judicial process which will, hopefully, throw light on the way the ship was managed, the adherence or otherwise to safety procedures, the leadership and behaviour of the ship's officers, the cause of the ship being sailed onto the rocks and the actions of the crew thereafter. Once that all becomes clear we will all be in a position to offer a more informed comment on this disaster.

Talk about the tail wagging the dog ! How can Lawyers of accused have the power to persuade a Judge to delay I.D. of bodies. Why didn't the Judge just say " The I.D of the bodies is of paramount importance to the waiting families of those who have died, and the I.D of bodies is irrelevent to any charge or proceedings. And surely, the sooner a body is checked for DNA the more accurate the I.D.
Perhaps the Judge who made this ruling ought to be challenged as to what justifies "in Law" the delay he has sanctioned !

Until the Judge's reasoning is known as to why the identification of bodies was suspended - there must be some legal reason under Italian Law , not simply a Judge's whim

How on earth could they stop the identification, the poor families that are waiting on news so their family members can finally be laid to rest. So sad.

I really don't understand Italian authorities doing this, Surely it is in everyone's interest to identify as quickly as possible the victims recovered from the ship. What does delaying this process achieve?

How is it even plausible that someone accused of a crime can prevent DNA identification. Have lawyers really sunk so low as to be less than human. No humanity left to even consider the family's of the missing.
