Michael Jackson's entire back catalogue, including an unreleased collaboration with Will.I.Am. has been stolen by hackers.

The Sony Music archive has been infiltrated by cyber-crooks, who have illegally downloaded more than 50,000 digital files.

Record company bosses paid $250 million (£156 million) to Jackson's estate in 2010 for the catalogue, including unheard material from studio sessions when the superstar recorded Off The Wall, Thriller and Bad.

A source tells Britain's Sunday Times, "Everything Sony purchased from the Michael Jackson estate was compromised.

"It caused them to check their systems and they found the breach. There was a degree of sophistication. Sony identified the weakness and plugged the gap."

The haul is also said to include a duet with the late Freddie Mercury and Black Eyed Peas rapper will.i.am.

The attack was discovered weeks after hackers targeted Sony's PlayStation Network in April, but was only confirmed by a Sony Music representative on Saturday.

i see a conspiracy here Michael Jackson didint even want sony to have his music thats why he left Sony. after his death his family done a deal with Sony knowing his wishes. ( cash in on michael) so for all we know it could be a family memeber trying to make some extra cash!

Karma baby! That's what he gets for stealing The Beatles' catalog.

This may be stupid idea of the day, but i'm sure its almost better most of these companies only ever keep a hard copy of something absolutely secret, especially Sony given their security track record.

The entire file was copied, PIRATED. Stolen would mean that the original item had been removed. It has not. They will still use whatever they paid for. The rights to use and ownership never changed hands. Maybe the "poor" victims should stop storing things where they are vulnerable. Sharp minds apparently have little to do with Sony...

Why don't they hire the folks who make absolutely hacker-proof voting machines to stop this sort of thing once and for all?
08:38 PM on 03/05/2012
There are no such things as hacker proof voting machines.
09:29 PM on 03/05/2012
The is no such thing as hacker-proof anything.
09:06 AM on 03/06/2012
The easiest way to make something "hacker-proof", don't let it anywhere near a computer network.
05:41 PM on 03/06/2012
And don't make it programmable, or at least not easily so, running on some off-the-shelf operating system on reprogrammable ROMs. It is amazing how many protected systems apparently feature a USB port to which one can attach a flash drive.

They wouldn't need that much hype, and if they did, letting the material out of the barn is a funny way to do it, unless you think the whole story is a ruse, and if so, our entire universe could be a dream.

I think most of what was stolen will be shared by consumers anyway.

It's kind of a non-story.

This is terrible. You hackers are threatening thevery fabric of our society. Shame on you. However, if you send me the links to the files, I'll retract everything I said.

Here's the problem with "security" on computers. The more sophisticated, the more layers (of security), the less secure it is. Why? Because there are more ways to get in. When people think of ways to "protect" your computer, theives think of the same thing in reverse.
