Back in January, inspired by David Hockney, we attempted to create an artwork on the iPad – with, it must be said, immensely disappointing results.

But while aping the techniques displayed in Hockney's A Bigger Picture didn't go quite to plan, that doesn't mean that iPads and iPhones have nothing unique to offer art lovers - quite the opposite in fact.

Many galleries and museums are now producing interactive apps that bring their collections to life and help us appreciate art that little bit more. Here are our currents faves...

With this app you can enter a gallery, take a photo of a painting, wait a swift moment for the app to complete its magical recognition wizardry, and find out all you need to know about said painting.

The app also helps you discover galleries and museums in your vicinity and browse a selection of artworks from their collections. With Artfinder's catalogue constantly growing this app gives you a wealth of knowledge and possibilities in your pocket.

Don't know what galleries are out there? Want to know more about the art you see? Just plain confused? Now you've got no excuse.
