Madeleine McCann went missing in May 2007

Portuguese police have launched a review of the Madeleine McCann case.

A team of detectives based in Oporto in northern Portugal has been appointed to re-examine the original investigation into the little girl's disappearance from the Algarve in 2007, the Portuguese newspaper Jornal de Noticias reported.

Scotland Yard officers have been carrying out their own review since last May.

It is understood that the team from Portugal's investigative Policia Judiciaria (PJ), headed by senior officer Helena Monteiro, has been looking at the Madeleine case for some weeks now.

Madeleine was nearly four when she went missing from her family's holiday flat in Praia da Luz in the Algarve on May 3 2007 as her parents Kate and Gerry dined with friends nearby.

Portuguese detectives, helped by officers from Leicestershire Police, carried out a massive investigation into her disappearance. The official inquiry was formally shelved in July 2008.

Scotland Yard's review of the case, called Operation Grange, was launched after a request from Home Secretary Theresa May supported by Prime Minister David Cameron.

Portugal's Correio da Manha newspaper reported that the PJ officers have not found any new leads that point to Madeleine's whereabouts and so will not formally reopen their investigation.

McCann family spokesman Clarence Mitchell said: "Kate and Gerry obviously welcome the work being done by the PJ in Oporto alongside that of the Met investigative team.

"They clearly hope that it will lead to the case being reopened in due course.

"There is good co-operation between the Met and the PJ, and Kate and Gerry remain grateful for the time and resources that have been put into the search for Madeleine.

"They will not be discussing any details whilst both the Met investigative review and the PJ work is continuing, but clearly it is a positive development."

You didn't need to be there to see neglect. The fact that Maddy is missing is proof of that. Any poor family would have been prosecuted,

we all now they are to blame

I wasn't there and neither were the people with their comments of hatred aimed at the parents. The lynch mob mentality prevails.

Lynch mob? Oh so they didn't purposely neglect their children so they could go out for tapas?
10:47 PM on 03/09/2012
they left 3 babies alone in an unlocked apartment just so they could have a meal "child free". Shame on them. They want it all, but they can't get it all. Any other thoughtful parent would have either taken their children with them to have a meal or had a meal with their children and then had a drink or whaver in the apartment with their children and just enjoyed being together. But not the McCann's

We all need to be a bit careful about repeating the claims made in newspapers about Madeleine's disappearance. However selfish and brainless the McCanns' actions might seem to most of us, they did not deserve the horrible suspicions thrown at them. How many of us, innocent but faced with hostile questioning by a foreign police officer, might decide to clam up to be on the safe side? It was as much because of the Portuguese system of not releasing anything to the press that our great British tabloids did what they do best - made it up or built a hint into a huge case against the parents. None of this helps Madeleine herself, if she is still out there. The truth is, though, that even if by some miracle she is found, she can never in any real sense be their child again.

This is not about clamming up...it is about the ultimate in child negligence. Regardless of any other fact , these parents purposely left their children alone whilst they went out.
You can sugar coat it all you want but it is still the parents fault that the little girl is now missing.

yes muso but they do deserve all the flack you say the press made stories up about the mccanns but what you did not write is that if it wasnt for the tabloid press were do you think all the money came from that was donated to help find maddy .It was alright then for them to use the press for there own satisfaction to appeal to the public for funds.money that paid for them to swan around the world meeting the pope going on chat shows paying there mortgage and acting like celebs. And if they had nothing to hide why did they stay stum surly if you have nothing to hide you would do everything in your power to help the police to find maddy and clear your name instead they went whinging to brown and then cameron and what happened they got involved and used taxpayers money something which did not happen when ben went so what ever folks write it is how they view what has happened

I wonder what the twins will think of their parents when they are old enough to understand that the reason their older sister is missing is because their parents left them alone in an apartment while they dined with friends. I wonder why Kate McCann refused to answer the questions put to her by Portugutese police. Don't think we'll ever know the full story about this child.

steamboats999: You are dead right, we won't ever know the truth, at least not here on Huffpost because they will delete it!

couldn't agree with you more, If Huff Post don't like it, it won't be published.

steamboats - years ago I met the children of a German SS officer who had been involved in mass killings - they said he had merely been doing his job exterminating the enemies of Germany - children rarely grow up to criticize the actiions of their parents because they are brought up with their parents versions of events

And Dr McCann refused to answer PJ police questtions on legal advice - no point in having a lawyer if you then ignore their advice especially if you are in a foreign country and not conversent with their laws and procedures

Ronnieince , would you not try to help police in every way you could to help find your lost child ?? Holding back info and refusing to answer questions is no help what so ever , it would make police think she was hiding something so serch would not be so much on kidnap

I agree with CodyMil17299703 and butterfly123. McCann's twist the facts to suit themselves and always have done. It would have been helpful to the Portuguese invesitgation if Kate McCann had answered the questions put to her by the Portuguese police, but she failed to answer any of the questions. David Cameron has already sanctioned British police to review the case which is costing us taxpayers a couple of million quid. Why is all this time, money and effort being put into finding one child. Don't get me wrong. I think what has happened to this little girl, whatever it is, is deplorable, but there are lots of other children missing and the same effort is not being put in to find them. The McCann's put their children in this situation and the only one my heart bleeds for is Madalaine herself. I wouldn't like to be in the McCann's shoes when they have their other two kids can read that their parents left them ALL alone in the apartment whilst they dined with friends, and because of that their older sister is now missing.

The fact is, if they had answered the questions then the police could have ruled them in/out and if they didn't have anything to do with it, then the police would have looked more into others, trying to find her.

Well said.

The McCann's spokesman Mr. Mitchell is twisting the facts: The McCanns themselves were entitled long ago to request the reopening of the case - they didn't do it. Nor did they do the OFFICIAL reconstruction in Portugal- they and their Tapas friends simply refused!

Oh dear, my guess is the Met will soon be knocking on the doors of their Tapas friends.

indlovubill - I very much doubt it - and in any event they have no legal powers to do so - the police can't compel you to be a witness - they can request your help but not force it
