Facebook Removes Image Of Two Men Kissing

Huffington Post UK | By Posted: 23/03/2012 14:40 Updated: 23/03/2012 15:24

Facebook has come under fire after a picture of two men kissing was apparently removed from the site because it infringed publishing rules of posting images of a “sexual” or “delicate” nature.

The snap was uploaded by Madrid-Based Visible Cultura LGTB to promote its Gay Arts Looks For A Home documentary.

But it was taken down for reportedly breaching decency codes, which bar images of a “political, sexual or other sensitive” nature, El Pais reported.

Facebook has claimed the image was removed as the result of a technical issue and the social networking giant is investigating.

Visible Cultura has since replaced the image – with a CENSORED stamp across it.

The page administrators have posted a response: “Can a kiss between two men be inappropriate?

"Apparently, Facebook thinks so. This image has just been censored when LGTB Non Goverment Spanish Culture Association VISIBLE tried to use it in a paid add (sic) in Facebook to promote a crowdfunding project. The image is by artist Juan Hidalgo.

“Until when are we going to put up with this Facebook nonsense? Are we really in the 21st century?

The documentary being promoted by the group, “brings together a thousand works of gay and lesbians donated by over four hundred artists from thirty countries,” El Pais said.

Twitter users have criticised Facebook for its actions.

  • Tim Tebow & Demaryius Thomas

Although the Denver Broncos quarterback filmed a Superbowl commercial in 2010 for the anti-gay, anti-abortion organization Focus On The Family (FOTF), he seems to have no problem sharing a male-on-male lip-lock in front of thousands (millions?) of onlookers when he kissed teammate Demaryius Thomas.

As is the case with most of his storylines, Chuck Bass' man-on-man smooch had a secretly devious intention. Still, we couldn't help but love watching the hit show's resident bad boy (played by the ever-dashing Ed Westwick) lock lips with a man in this much-hyped sequence.

  • Ally & Ling on 'Ally McBeal'

Certainly groundbreaking for its time when it aired in 1999, a hot kiss between Ally (Calista Flockheart) and Ling (Lucy Liu) took place after the latter character's erotic dream. As After Ellen notes, both women ultimately concluded that what they really want out of a relationship is 'a penis,' but were at least willing to consider the possibility that they might be 'gay.'

Time for a Facebook "Kiss-In". Although I'm not sure why even that is necessary - as there are already MILLIONS of couples kissing in FB photos.

Its about time this picture and this topic was put to rest, its not normal to see 2 people of the same sex kiss and its not normal to marry too! Life today for our kids is a mess due to PC, Civil Liberties and Human Wrongs!!!!
05:52 PM on 06/26/2012
take the mike2: No, life today isn't a mess due to pc, it's a mess because of closed minded hateful bigots like you. Children HAVE to be taught to HATE, they don't naturally HATE. If you don't like looking at 2 people kiss. then don't look at them. That is what everybody else does. There is no room in society for such hatred that you spread.. shame on you. let others live their lives.. also, if seeing a picture of 2 men kissing is going to have THAT much influence on your children's life, then what does that say about your parenting????? Loser!
11:41 AM on 07/03/2012
To Teddyhanson: Thats abit harsh to call someone a loser and comment on their parenting just because you don't agree with their point of view. Your saying he's full of hate but your totally getting your knickers in a twist and being childish by name calling.

Some of us don't appreciate images of two people of the same sex kissing being shoved in front of us. It's not so easy these days to chose to see it or not because it's on most tv programmes. Yeah I'll happily change the channel if it's on tv! Children also do not need to see that sort of thing. What because you want kids to be aware some people are gay means it's right for them to see it? I don't think so.

I am a Top Commentor for alot of Magazines; also I am a Retired Bank Officer. Instead of Facebook worring about 2 men kissing, they should really worry about all the porno that is placed on Facebook. I deleted my account with them because they came up with a new fiture that was added onto Facebook named Timeline. Timeline is not a good product for the consumer. What upset me the worst was that they are forceing all of their clients switch to Timeline without their consent or choose. If you think that you can delete Timeline from your Facebook; quess what, you are wrong. You may try over and over but Timeline is there weather you like it or not. I have reported Facebook/Timeline to several Magazines and Friends. One way or another Facebook will be going away. Just like Bank of America. They don't even know where to make their profits anylonger. That is another company that needs to be dissembled and sold like a junk yard. Last year I was telling people; becareful with Bank of America; they wish not to listen and now look at what is happening.

Homosexuals have gone through the re-branding process, and are now "gay". Years ago it was against the law, now its almost mandatory. It should not have been illegal, nor should it be celebrated and forever in the public eye, with proud to be gay marches. Everyone get on with your sexual preference, but stop making it an issue.

"Everyone get on with your sexual preference, but stop making it an issue."

I wish we could, but unfortunately too many anti-gay types want to make it an issue. I wish we could post a picture as innocent as 2 people kissing without it being taken down for being "of a sexual or delicate nature." I mean really, the only "delicate" nature about the picture is that it upsets some people's "delicate" sensibilities. Those sensiblilities are antiquated and need to be updated. It's 2012 for crying out loud.

You seem to be in denial about the global widespread discrimination against LGBT individuals. I interpret your comments as... "Just be gay and shut up." That's extremely offensive.

I would rather see 2 men kissing then seeing an old lady being mugged........... people get a life.................

Unfortunately this is far from the first time that Facebook has removed a non-sexual gay kiss or male image for being 'inappropriate'. They tend to have a 'delete first and ask questions never' outlook on any pictures that they get reported to them. If one homophobe does a complaint, they are likely to delete the pic, ban the user from posting for a time, and not give them any way to debate or argue the picture or banning.

Facebook has become just another right-wing psuedo-moralistic corporate machine.

It's just beyond belief in the 21st century to have bigotry ratified like this, and by an organisation that was started by a Harvard student - you'd think that education would have engendered some decency.
