Billions Of Potentially Habitable Planets May Exist In Our Galaxy

Billions of potentially habitable planets may exist in our galaxy, the Milky Way, according to a study.

Around 100 "super-Earths" may be found on our galactic doorstep, at distances less than 30 light years from the sun.

Astronomers came up with the prediction after conducting a survey of red dwarf stars, which account for 80% of stars in the Milky Way.

They calculate that around 40% of red dwarfs have a rocky planet not much bigger than Earth orbiting the "habitable zone" where liquid surface water can exist.

Where there is water, there could be life - although being in the habitable zone is no guarantee that life has evolved on a planet.
Dr Xavier Bonfils, from Grenoble University in France, who led the international team, said: "Because red dwarfs are so common - there are about 160 billion of them in the Milky Way - this leads us to the astonishing result that there are tens of billions of these planets in our galaxy alone."

The astronomers surveyed a carefully chosen sample of 102 red dwarfs using the European Southern Observatory's 3.6-metre telescope at La Silla, Chile.

A total of nine super-Earths - planets with masses between one and 10 times that of Earth - were found. Two were located within the habitable zones of the stars Gliese 581 and Gliese 667 C.

These data were combined with other observations, including those of stars which did not have planets.

The astronomers worked out that habitable zone super-Earths orbiting red dwarfs occurred with a frequency of around 41%.
On the other hand massive planets similar to Jupiter and Saturn were rare around red dwarfs. Less than 12% of the stars were expected to have such "gas giants".

Because red dwarfs are common near the sun, many "super-Earths" may not be far away in astronomical terms. The scientists estimate there could be around 100 habitable zone planets within 30 light years.

Red dwarfs are cooler than the sun, which means planets must orbit close to their parent stars to be warm enough to be habitable.

This might not be good news for life.

"The habitable zone around a red dwarf, where the temperature is suitable for liquid water to exist on the surface, is much closer to the star than the Earth is to the sun," said team member Dr Stephane Udry, from Geneva Observatory.
"But red dwarfs are known to be subject to stellar eruptions or flares, which may bathe the planet in X-rays or ultraviolet radiation, and which may make life there less likely."

From the skies we look little ants on the go 24hrs a day,
It makes me wonder why we're here and why we all have to pray,
Some pray more than others but there's a few that wont bother at all,
There's so many different religions it's know wonder we're out of control,
Earths like a womans womb and one day her waters will brake,
So we better be readily equipped for the trip we all have to make,
Our planets been given a time limit so the future of man is at stake,
It's time to pull our socks up and stop making so many damn mistakes,
Each generation should improve but with us it's not always the case,
Some parents want their children to learn and some are just a disgrace,
Greed lust and addictions are rife and arguments with the trouble and strife,
Governments will fall and progress will stall forgetting the meaning of life.

Whatever you do,don't allow ANY UK governments to inhabit any of those planets as if you do...it won't be habitable for long. Our politicians suck the life out of everything.

Once read an interesting way of understanding time.If the earth was formed 24 hours ago,it took 6 hours for the earth to cool down.another 4 for the poisonous gases to disipate,a few hours later the seas were formed enough for coral to be grow .Another few hours till sea life evolved,Then about 3 hours ago there were the dinosaurs roaming. It was only 2 seconds ago Jesus was alive. Now think of "infinity" ( I cant) something that is meant to go on for ever ,no end.We have the Milkyway as our galaxy ,there are millions of galaxies hundreds and millions of light years apart. How on earth ( no pun intended) can anyone assume we are the only planet with intelligent life (thank god for dolphins and whales)

It probably won't matter. If the powers that be don't get their finger out then we will have destroyed ourselves long before we are in a position to travel anywhere else. What a sad situation, over forty years after the first moon landing. Getting rid of all religions in the world, and accepting that all people are basically the same, would be a start - but I'm not holding my breath on that one.

If there is life there they need to be sent a warning that the Conservatives will probably tax them.

If we do find life maybe the USA will invade that planet and give some of the small nations on Earth a break. Just for a change.

Is it just me or is the title of the link to this page very misleading. The link that i clicked stated that billions of habitable planets 'found' near Earth.
As far as I know there hasn't actually been even 1 planet found for certainty that could sustain human existance, far less billions that have apparently been found.
When I arrived on the article however it the states that billions of planets may potentially exist that could support human habitation. A slight difference from the heading that I clicked on.
10:12 PM on 03/28/2012
It doesn't say anything about sustaining human existance. It says habitable. Non intelligent life more than likely.

To think that we are the only planet that has a life form as we know is narrow minded I suspect there is life on other planets. I just hope if there is they are not making the same mistakes that we are making.

Until they actually find intelligent life out there this is all just sheer speculation.
02:53 AM on 03/29/2012
Do you mean "until governments actually admit that they have been dealing with these intelligences for some time" No need to look "out there" they were here long before us, do some research, way too much evidence.
08:37 AM on 03/29/2012
Absolutely, they live under the bridges with the Trolls or in the forest with the Faries

I'm not saying there's no life elsewhere, just that we've no proof. Don't be silly, if our government was dealing with them surely we'd have learned a bit more about living with each other instead of marching to war all the time.

Well there goes the GOD theory then! Perhaps soon the lies stuffed down our throats about religion will be banished to the history books for good.

Our future generations will be saying that Man used to believe in trees, water and fire. Then a few centuries later he was worshiping a Harry Potter type figure who said he was the son of god.

The future cannot come soon enough.
