Petrol Panic: Diane Hill Suffers 40% Burns After Transferring Fuel In York Kitchen (PICTURES)

The Huffington Post UK  |  By Dina Rickman  |  Posted: 30/03/2012 14:25 Updated: 1/04/2012 12:46

This is the mother who suffered 40% burns when transferring fuel from a petrol can in her kitchen, following advice from a government minister to keep fuel at home in a jerry can.

According to The Sun, a fireball engulfed Hill, 46.

Peter Hudson, of North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said the fuel she was decanting ignited as she was using the cooker at the time. She was attempting to transfer the petrol from one container to another using a jug for her daughter's car.

Her current condition is critically ill.

Next-door neighbour Margot Johnston, 86, said she'd "never seen anything like it": "I had been gardening and came in to make myself a cup of tea and I was aware of a cloud of smoke coming over the hedge.

"I thought because it was a lovely day that they must be having a barbecue.

"Then I noticed there was someone in the garden who seemed to be on fire.

"One of the daughters was in the garden and I said 'Have you phoned for the ambulance?' and she said she had.

"Even all through the war I had never seen anything like it."

The row threatens cabinet minister Francis Maude who had previously advised members of the public to keep a bit of fuel in a "jerry ken" in their garage - advice condemned by the Fire Brigades Union as illegal.

The Fire Brigades Union has since called on the government to make an urgent public safety announcement highlighting the dangers of petrol in the home after Hill's accident.

It led Labour MP Karl Turner to call for Maude to resign, tweeting:

Karl Turner MP
Francis Maude should resign if his politicking and unnecessary panic has led to York woman decanting petrol in kitchen suffering 40% burns

Labour MP John Mann is also calling upon Maude to resign. In a statement he said "This is precisely what the fire brigade warned against and the current panic is a direct result of Francis Maude’s rash and foolish reaction to negative press on pasty’s and number 10 dinners we are now in a position where a woman’s life has been placed in danger. Francis Maude should now be considering the consequences of his actions and do the decent thing and resign”.

Any threatened strike has now been put off until Easter as union Unite, the government and haulage companies carry out talks with conciliatory service Acas.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service's Hudson said: "Members of the public should take extreme care when handling and storing petrol and be aware of the risks associated with incorrect use and storage of fuel.

Fuel Tanker Strike: Ministers Hold Talks With Haulier Bosses As Panic-Buying Continues

"In domestic situations fuel containers must not be stored in living accommodation such as kitchens, living rooms and bedrooms or under staircases.

"Any storage place should be well away from living areas and be secured to protect against the possibility of vandalism or arson."

He continued: "Never bring petrol inside your home. If you do smell petrol fumes in a garage or outbuilding ventilate the area and make sure nobody smokes or turns electrical switches on or off. The slightest spark could cause an explosion."

I have every sympathy for the woman who is now in hospital although common-sense doe tell me that decanting petrol in the house is dangerous, especially near a lit cooker. It would have been safer to do it in the garden. At the end of the day the 'Elf 'n' Safety Police will never stop things like this happening.
As for Francis Maude, his 'Jerry Cans' statement will become the defining moment of his career and the last two weeks have been bad for the Tories who's 'Granny Tax' will go down with the voters like the 'Poll Tax' then there is the confusing 'Pasty Tax'. Labour are still discredited, having almost bankrupted this country and all this has been reflected in the Bradford West By-Election.
The tanker drivers have better beware. They may have a lot of clout at the moment but over-zealous use of strike action can turn public opinion against them and it will only be a matter of time before they could find themselves out on their ear - just ask the miners.

Maude out now! He looks way too much like Andrew Lloyd Webber, (which in turn invokes another of my pet hates: Lloyd Grossman!) Guilt by association; cast him out now!

For goodness sake!

Are we now too infantile to think for ourselves and have to blame everyone else for our actions?

You can't have it both ways - you can't complain about the "nanny state" and health and safety and then go and cry when you give up your independence of thought to the government...

Shouldn't even be up for debate. One small mention by a misguided government official and mass panic ensues, burn victim, and the resultant fallout. He might as well have told the public that a hoarde of zombies was heading towards the shores of the UK while he was at it. If this is how he thinks things through when he is NOT under pressure, imagine what he is capable of when he IS. Get rid of this clown.

Stand by your man, Cameran. there should be no hesitation he should have been fired from day one. a totally inappropriate statement to make by anyone on such a sensitive subject. He knew the greedy, irresponsible and selfish would create panic at the pumps causing chaos, and they did. Who do these so called intellectual MPs think they are, Gods, who can say and do as they like and get away with it. Well, George Galloway, like him or not has just broken the mould of sameness. The people have spoken and it seems that, the predictable 3 are on their way at last. they have been in power far too long that their contempt for the whole country oozes from them. Well the times they are a changing, the people have awoken at last..Cos change is gonna come..Bring it on no matter who....

The George Galloway vote happened in Bradford and could only happen in a predominantly Muslim area.Use what brains you have.Yes the times they are a changing,I agree with you on that, but are we so stupid in this country, are we sheeple, has common sense gone out of the window? The advice given by Francis Maude was simply to put a bit of fuel in a jerry can and store it in a shed, not your kitchen and with your gas cooker on to transfer it to another container with a jug.As I have already commented the lady in question must have read the safety warning signs which are displayed at every petrol station ie.Turn off your engine before using the pumps etc etc etc. That in itself is a dead giveaway. It means that petrol is a very hazardous liquid. Then she must have read/heard/seen the news reports that the reason for the proposed tanker drivers strike was about health and safety issues.I guess though that common sense cant be taught but only gained through experience.

The issue here is, I believe, Does Mr Maude himself believe his actions or comments have any of the unfortunate consequences?
Its as straight forward as that.
As a footnote...having served 30 years in the Fire and Rescue service, I would add that I have encountered large numbers of people who are regularly miss understood the dangers they are in, or could be in, thats why we have emergency services...people do unexpected things, some through ignorance, and lack of knowledge, others are simply reckless.

According to the above report Francis Maude advised people to keep a bit of petrol in a jerry can in the garage, garage being the proverbial word not the kitchen.

We are talking about an Westminster trougher here, not a normal person. How many of the electorate actually have a garage? And among those who do, how many have room for a car in the garage? Going by the number of cars parked upon footpaths and at curbs there cannot be too many. To those Westminster troughers the World is a different place and they have no idea how the rest of us must live.

The advice was unnecessary and resulted in panic buying which did cause a fuel shortage in some areas, hence the daughter was unable to get fuel for her car which resulted in the mother who had been panic buying trying to share what she had with her family. The fact that Ms Hill was unaware of the danger of handling petrol in a badly ventilated area where there was a naked flame is irrelevant, this unfortunate accident wouldn't have happened if a government minister hadn't given such ridiculously stupid advice.
My best wishes for a speedy recovery to Ms Hill.
05:11 PM on 03/31/2012
Are you right? hmm I put it to you that this unfortunate accident wouldn't have happened if gas cookers and cars had never been invented, or if Oil had never been discovered. I always say you can't educate 'pork' and to decant a highly flammable liquid in ones kitchen with the bloody gas fire on is not just ignorance or stupidity it is bloody suicidal. Who is to say if this poor lady even heard what Francis Maude had said?? Of course there always has to be "someone to blame" in todays society gone mad.

Oh I can. Is it your view that the government should only represent those with a level of "common sense" you deem appropriate? Of course, never mind the oath Maude swore on taking his seat - or should oaths be treated as meaningless mumbo jumbo by Tories? I can blame him very seriously. He should do the decent thing and fall on his sword.
01:56 PM on 03/31/2012
It seems to me this argument is about taking responsibility for your actions, and as a lot of people are pointing out Diane Hill was negligent in her actions.

So what about Mr Maude, Or "Minister" as I'm sure he insists on being addressed. Here is the man who caused nationwide panic, Where none was necessary, and why? Just to give the population something else to worry about, and move media attention away from the governments week of "poor bashing, and rich pleasing policies".

No one is saying he should resign over Diane Hills unfortunate accident. But spreading alarm and despondency, causing nationwide panic, and just being an idiot. Definitely time to fall on the sword old son. Time to man up, Just remember Edwina and the Eggs..

One of the problems is that we're 'over-warned' by manufacturers and service providers who cover their backs by including every caveat they can think of on their labels. The result that some people lose the ability to use their commonsense and children grow up with a limited ability assess risk.

I agree with you but I would also add that if the government does'nt advise on certain issues they are lambasted.I reckon it's a bit of a catch 22 situation.
12:45 PM on 03/31/2012
The overall handling of this situation by the government has been underhanded and very poor I think it’s a bit much to blame Francis Maude in this story. The people of this country need to learn to take responsibility for their actions and personal situations.
Whilst it’s sad that this poor woman suffered it is however her fault. Whilst he may have recommended stock-piling he did not suggest playing with petrol in your kitchen whilst you cook dinner.
12:27 PM on 03/31/2012
As sorry as I am for what happened since any injury is a tragedy, this is about as stupid as pouring petrol with a lit cig in her mouth or making toast in a toaster in the bath or flying a kite with a key on top in a thunderstorm.
12:45 PM on 03/31/2012
I agree, so don't blame Francis Maude for the accident. Millions of people have managed to safely handle relatively small quantities of petrol safely for decades, such as those with a petrol driven lawn mower.
