George Galloway Shock Victory Costs Bookies Hundreds Of Thousands Of Pounds

George Galloway's shock victory in Bradford West has cost bookies hundreds of thousands of pounds in the biggest ever by-election payout in history.

Ladbrokes said punters were walking away with up to £100,000 after the new Respect MP beat odds of up 33/1.

Mr Galloway ripped up the form book as the Labour candidate went down to a heavy loss - despite being quoted as the heavy 1/50 favourite by the firm at the outset of the campaign.

Alex Donohue, of Ladbrokes, said: "Galloway has hit us for six. His supporters have pulled off a political gamble of epic proportions.

"We naively assumed the money at big prices was an attempt to slash the odds for the campaign. We couldn't have been more wrong."

Mr Galloway's odds were brought in over the course of the campaign, rating 20/1, 10/1 and then 5/1. Betting was briefly suspended as money piled on the Respect campaign.

Ladbrokes said it was not offering "specials" on Mr Galloway - including 25/1 he does a cat impression as the Bradford West MP in Parliament, a reference to his appearance on Celebrity Big Brother in 2006.

The elementary answer to his easy political success lies in (HIS) choice of Bradford to get back into Parliament. Where else could be so easy to win a seat. Aim at the growing ethnic minority boiling pot, promise everything the main parties don't, and hey presto!

Its also easy to deliver on promises because, all you have to do is stir up constituency resentment against the government to the point they have make concessions to quell ethnic trouble. Then if the government don't give in he gets no critisism for trying to represent his constituents. Either way we all end up paying for all the mischief in many ways.

like him or hate him, he is one of the few political heavy weights. I want to here what he has to say even if I don't agree with it.

Why would anyone bet against Galloway? True men who face long odds frequently prevail unexpectedly.

Bookies only lose big money when favourites win. All punters know this. So let us not weep for the bookies.

Not that i have much time for Mr Galloway really but he has done us all a great service here by "sticking it to" the three main parties and thier "£30,000 per year private school, eton and the like PPE degree at oxford or cambridge internship parachuted into a safe seat rich toff no idea whatsoever about the struggles of ordinary people MPs", a wake up call methinks, lets hope they heed it!

Lets be honest who really wants moaning Millaband or Ed Balls. They were part of the last Government and made a pigs ear of the economy etc. At least Galloway has guts to get on with it and win instead of being a gutless moaner windging that everyone is wrong and only he is right.

The one that made the biggest pigs ear was Maggie Thatcher when she sold off all our assets and closed down all our industries. Thats why we are in such dire straits now

I didn't agree with much of what Mrs.Thatcher did but lets face up to the reality and not rewritten history as put over by left wing activist, digested, repeated and spouted by uneducated people who don't know any better. If one remembers the period preceding Mrs.Thatchers premiership the country was in ruins. Still not having fully recovered financially from the second world war, regularly held to ransom by too powerful unions, most of which were run by communist leaders who were on a mission to bring this country to its knees, realising their wish of a soviet style state. She had to take them on, destroy their power and save this country. If anyone did a disservice to this country and its people, including their members, it was the unions who abused the power they were entrusted with. Your opinions are wrong and out of date, life as moved on and the dinosaurs of the left have been shown for what they are, unconstructive fools with nothing to offer.

Bang another drum everybody is fed up of hearing this tripe, i grew up in the fifties and sixties and watched the bloody unions destroy every thing that was worth having in this country by the time mags got to power there wasnt any industry worth talking about left.

A not altogether surprising result considering he played heavily on the Afghanistan issue and Bradford has a large Asian community.

Good old George. Always guaranteed to stuff it up 'em. Remember when some US inquiry tried to grill him? He stuffed it up 'em. Like him or loathe him, he invariably comes up smiling. We need more mavericks like him.

Not gambling in the muslim section of the community? Who would have thought it!

Could it just be that all those voters first laid bets at 10-1 on him winning ? Then went to the voting booths to vote themselves a nice payday.

The Votors have spoken, along with 95% of the rest of the U.K we do not want any more of our soldiers being slaughtered in a War that we cannot win, and when we eventually withdraw there will be civil war and the Taliban will be back in charge as if nothing has changed, and then will will ask why did all these men and Woman have to die.

Congratulation Mr. Galloway you have rightful attacked Bush and Blair for two useless wars that never served the interest of the US or UK. Iraq lost 100,000 dead, as to the British and American soldiers that died they were sent to a war that is not necessary, Iraq was WMD none found, Afghan was to chase a criminal that could have been captured without a war. Now you may ask are those politicians that made a major mistakes going to stand for trial and if found guilty serve time in jail, the answer no, politicians makes Laws to protect them from mistakes.
