Hermitcrab

A new home may be hard to afford in these times of austerity but one lucky crab has landed a multi-coloured pad made especially for him.

Harry the hermit crab, who lives in the rock pool in the Atlantis Discovery Area at Legoland in Windsor, Berkshire, has a shell made entirely of Lego bricks.

Hermit crabs do not have their own shells so normally protect their soft bodies by salvaging empty sea shells and moving into them.

Harry showed more discerning taste when he chose a shell made out of the blue, red and yellow bricks over the more traditional options.

Liane Riley, senior aquarist at Legoland, said: "We decided to give Harry a wider choice and the model makers here created a special Lego house just for him.

"We weren't really sure if he'd actually move in, but he rejected the sea and snail shells on offer and seems very comfortable in his new home". "

Visitors to Legoland will be able to visit Harry in Atlantis's interactive touch pool area from today.

When Hermit crabs move into new shells, they actually leave the shell they're in first.

This photo shows a crab inside a shell inside a lego shell.

so, either they built a lego shell around a seashell, and the crab moved into the new shell decorated with legos... or

they built a shell around a crab already in the shell.

point being, I'd have been more impressed if he actually moved into ONLY a lego shell.

A very sound comment.
A bit crabby about a fun story though!

WOW 1st COMMENT!!! Lol, anyways... I think this is funny and so long as they had provided the crab an option and didn't force this upon him then it's really cool. I have seen some really odd things used for shells by hermit crabs from private owners on YouTube and this is far from the strangest. If the little guy likes what he's wearing, finds it comfortable, and truly choose it over various other shell types then it works out best for him and the Lego Land park even possible the Lego brand. I think he would be a great star for a Lego commercial sometime.
