Alex MacNaughton's 'London Tattoos' Shows The People Behind Their Tattoos (PICTURES)

One of the subjects of London Tattoos

Photographer Alex MacNaughton was on a routine press job snapping a journalist getting a tattoo when he began idly flicking through the design books left on the palour’s table.

“I felt the shots were all very similar, rather gothic, all about the tattoo. There was nothing about the person,” he explains.

From this point an idea was born: to photograph tattoos in a way that provided a portrait, not just of the ink itself but of the person it was attached to.

London Tattoos is MacNaughton’s 4th book, having released previous titles about London’s street art scene.

Properly photographed body can look fantastic and MacNaughton’s portraits do a great job of bringing out the personalities behind them.

For many people the biggest barrier to getting a tattoo is an inability to think of anything they’d realistically want etched on their skin for life.

And it’s that decision, above all else, that London Tattoos helps to illuminate: how does the person match to the tattoo, and what made them choose it?

I am not impressed. Do they know that 'less' is more?

Surely "ex-military types" get their tattoos because of the "uniformity of life in the services". Following the crowd.

A tattoo is basically a stupid person's way of telling you that they are stupid ... before they open their mouth ... ( " I thank you " )

OK, I will turn a blind eye to mature ex-military types who got themselves a tattoo to escape the 'uniformity' of life in the services. However, the cloying younger generation really make me laugh as their tattoos are ANYTHING BUT "INDIVIDUAL" . Why? Well, because they ALMOST ALL have one of course! If everyone drove a Mini (of slightly different colours etc.) then NOBODY would be 'unique'.. it really is that simple.

It must be acknowledged however that tattoos are a very accurate way to discern whether a person has any (real) 'style' and/or any (real) 'class'.

There are only two certainties in life... death, and a guy or gal with a tattoo!

( " I Thank You " )

Another form of self-harming which is symptomatic of mental health issues.

Get over yourselves people who think "get a life" comes to mind or say tattoos will wrinkle.
Your whole body wrinkles if you do or dont want it to.
If people make a mistake and want to remove them, so be it.
Thats their mistake. Not yours so stop moaning about it.
Tattoos are a way of expressing your self, your belifes and a form of art work.
People who think its stupid, thats fine its your own opinion, everyones entitled to one after all.
But when you sit on a laptop with only pixels are identifying you and you slag off someones body art or photography work, your simply a coward.
I personally adore tattoos, and have my own opinion on them. I dislike overcrowding your body with them, but thats just me, what I prefer and dont. But I wouldnt go and slag someones work off sitting behind a computer screen.
I think this photography work is amazing, it just goes to show that some people dont look like they have the certain tattoo on their bodies.
Each tattoo will have a meaning, a story, an emotinal journey through the persons eyes it is displayed on.
Fantastic images, good subject. What more could you want.

I have hundreds of photos, home movies etc. etc. which have ''a meaning'' or convey different periods of "my life journey"... I don't need to tattoo any of these ONTO ME to remember, or care any more about, any of those people, places ot times than I already do.

Indeed, people have every right to tattoo themselves etc. etc. and need no justification for so doing. But to try and suggest that this makes them more spiritually or emotionally 'switched on' is complete tomfoolery on your part my friend.

when nature is cruel and gives you a bad birth mark, sometimes you have to live with it,yet some people go ahead and pay a fortune just to waste thier skin which can look ugly when you get older

Yuk. Tats will go out of fashion. Soon I hope. They certainly don't do much for job prospects (unless you are a tattoo-ist.

I could think of several ways to spend my money better. I trust that they will not want the NHS to remove them in later life.
