George Osborne 'Happy' To Look At Ministers Disclosing Their Tax Affairs

PA/The Huffington Post  |  By Posted: 7/04/2012 08:37 Updated: 7/04/2012 08:37

A US-style system of top politicians' tax returns being published could be considered in the UK, George Osborne indicated as the issue of personal finances continued to dominate the London mayoral race.

The Chancellor told The Telegraph he was "very happy" for the Government to look at the move and Business Secretary Vince Cable declared that he was prepared to be open about his personal finances.

Pressure for ministers to reveal their income intensified on Thursday when the main rivals competing to become Mayor of London set out details of their own earnings and tax.

The openness was prompted by a bitter public row between Boris Johnson and Ken Livingstone over tit-for-tat accusations of avoiding income tax by channelling earnings through companies.

In an intervention that is sure to open a serious debate, Osborne told the newspaper: "My personal principle has been: make the rules in general more transparent. We are happy to consider publishing tax returns for people seeking the highest offices. Of course, they do it in America."

The developments this week have been seen by many as a sign of an americanisation of British politics.

Osborne also made clear that he would be open about whether he personally benefits in future from the reduction in the top 50p rate of income tax which he controversially cut in last month's budget.

"No doubt, next time I fill in a tax return, I will be asked the question and will give you a straightforward answer," he said - saying he had not been in the top earner category last time.

Backing openness in tax affairs, Cable told The Telegraph: "I'm quite happy to be open about it. I have no problem with my tax return being published while I am in Government."

Livingstone, who is fighting to wrest back for Labour the post he lost in 2008, has come under fire for channelling earnings through a company so that they are liable for corporation not income tax.

In a foul-mouthed bust-up, Tory incumbent Johnson called his City Hall predecessor a "liar" over on-air allegations that he operated a similar arrangement.

Challenged to do so by Mr Livingstone, Johnson and Liberal Democrat hopeful Brian Paddick issued accountant-signed statements of their earnings and tax for the past three or four years.

But although he published some figures, the ex-mayor said he would only give full details of his earnings if others agreed to disclose information concerning spouses and partners.

The figures he did publish were attacked for not making any financial sense, and for lacking the authenticity of an accountants letter, which had accompanied the details released by Johnson and Paddick

What's the story mourning Tories?

Dark Lord Osbourne is happy to look at anything and talk about anything, because he'll do what he wants if he can get away with it. Not uncommon in politics I know, except for him being from the underworld.

Oh yes

his ministerial salary puts him automatically in the higher tax band

so ho does he not pay the 50p rate if he isn't usng tax dodges and fiddles
12:54 AM on 04/08/2012
northern git - his Ministerial Salary is not more than £150K a year so he would not be in the highet tax band - he would be a 40% tax payer - even David Cameron , the highest paid minister is paid less than £150 K a year - check out the figures for yourself

Well I will stick my head above the parapet and declare in my opinion private tax affairs of anyone, politicians included, are a matter between them and HMRC. The argument "we pay their wages" could be levelled at several million public sector workers, many of whom get paid considerably more than the PM let alone a back bencher. I am much more interested in their expenses and "peripheral" incomes, what are they being paid for other jobs they "do" whilst they are meant to be representing their electorate.Anyone who can legitimately take advantage of the tax laws to lessen their tax burden would or does do so, we are hypocritical to suggest otherwise and target politicians. I am always looking for ways to lessen my tax bill. |So let's be realistic and keep a check on what they spend on their non taxable expense claims and their so called outside interest income.
08:27 PM on 04/07/2012
Could not agree more it's a private matter, other than to add that MP's should declare funds provided by all sources with no lower cap. If the Minister of Health for example rec'd support from private health companies this should be highlighted as a clear conrflict of interest.

Every year I, as a state worker, have to fill out a 'financial disclosure form,' that manages to pry into every single asset or debt that exists in my life. So, what you threaten to do, is already being done.

Please explain more. In my 20 odd years as a fairly senior public servant I was never required to do so albeit all details of my salary, accrued pension, expenses et al were published each year. I am interested in why this is required of you.

This is just another PR exercise, let us all be clear about it. Those who are in finance know how to window dress figures so that they appear to look reasonable they are indeed just perhaps meaningless in the contest of what the real wealth of some politicans is. They would no doubt declare all their earnings relating to their ministerial duties only. Other additional earning from investments and the like would be possibly channelled through limited companies not in the name of the minister submitting the paperwork. So it is really a futile exercise as there are various ways as they say to skin a cat. Let's us leave it at that.

At least it should make some crooked businessmen think twice about going into politics.

My main concern is what they earn in EXPENSES
Let their voters see who is playing the system
Second homes? Why do they need these? If you live in London and want to represent somewhere in the North of England then move there. Any person whose company wants them to move does so with a relocation award. Government build a block of flats , all the same , to house MPs when they are in session. Creating jobs , security , and no scamming of expenses

George Osborne is quite happy to review how much tax you pay s, it would just make him even more smug as he cuts benefits, makes every work longer and blame everybody else. Nurses, teachers, care workers and anybody else who disagree with him, which is just about everybody. All he has to do is wait until his father dies and passes on his title and multi-million pound fortune. He cares little about anybody else and won’t be concerned when he loses his job.

Do you really think for one minute you will really find out what "they" are being paid? All you will see is surface earnings (how the hell cocking up the country can be described as "earnings") you will not see the rest, the bigger picture. I had to laugh at Red Kens attempts to vilify Boris J (not that I'm keen on either of them) and also saying politicans must be more open while completely and utterly refusing to allow anyone to inspect his tax avoidance companies or links. Now that is a typical politician!
