Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race Brought To Halt By Thames Swimmer (PICTURES)

The 158th Xchanging Boat Race between Oxford and Cambridge was brought to a halt by a man swimming across the Thames.

The crews were forced to stop between the two and three-mile marker when the man was spotted swimming in the river.

The blades of the Oxford team's oars narrowly missed the swimmer and the race was halted.

Swimmer disrupts for 1st time in history. Crowd goes wild.

Paul Harrison
I feel sorry for the rowers. The momentum and adrenaline has been rudely interrupted.

Larry the Cat
The stopped because a man swam in front of the boats. Police investigating rumour that he saw Samantha Brick on the opposite bank.

The crews were neck and neck when the man brought the four-and-a-quarter mile race to a standstill.

It is not the first time the Boat Race has been temporarily halted. In 2001 the race was stopped by the umpire just over a minute after the start following repeated warnings to both crews to move apart and then a clash of blades for which Oxford was blamed. The race was subsequently restarted and Cambridge rowed to victory.

Cambridge eventually won the race following the drama.

In a further twist a rower at the back of the Oxford boat was removed from the vessel after he collapsed at the end of the race.

Medic Alexander Woods, 27, was lifted from the bow.

Umpire John Garrett told the BBC after the race the man in the water was "totally unexpected" and "like the suffragettes all over again, I think."

Cambridge president Dave Nelson described it as a "pretty dramatic race".

Speaking to the BBC on the riverbank afterwards, he said: "It was really to-ing and fro-ing up until the island.

"We would move a seat, they would move a seat and then suddenly there was this yelling about an obstruction going on and then the next thing I know I see a guy's head just in the middle of the two boats and there's something like 10 or 20 boats following us so that guy was in serious strife if the armada of boats was coming steaming through.

"Then I guess there was all the hoo-ha around the restart and then the clash."

He expressed concern for Dr Woods of Pembroke College, who was being treated by the medical crew but was said to be conscious and sitting up.

Oxford cox Zoe de Toledo, 27, could be seen being comforted at the end of the race.

brave man to even think about swimming in that cesspool

I have to say that I didnt witness this waterborne demontratation since the event is possibly the most tedious you could watch t similar to curling or bowls. However I can rightly assume the supposed 'demo' was the most exciting thing to have happened during the race. I feel the elitist nature of the competition is a subliminal turnoff to many and I would prefer my TV licence money being spent on much more entertaing viewing such as 'Its a Knock out' without the Royals ! Its a tradition that needs to be viewed much lower down the TV channels. I'm sure the 'Dons' can handle a remote !

Mokgee, amongst others who support this idiolistic fool....... i dont hear you giving up your standard of living which 'all' us elitists have created for you!!!! through damn hard work and graft and pioneering and commercialism...... when you can reply from within a cave, with absolutely no facilities or luxaries or clothes or most foods, then come to me and complain......... 99% of of population is elitist, just look at football!! paying £70,000 per week to someone to kick a pigs bladder...Uh? explain that one! most of you watch and idiolise that sport, you support elitism in Football!!!. These rowers did it for nothing and i , as a once national gold medaist, coxless pairs, can assure you they worked a damn site harder this past year than any footballer!

Hopefully this lout will feel encouraged to exercise his "principles" a little further and run out in front of the cars at the British Grand Prix !. Perhaps he could persuade one or two of the "Commies" that have commented on this page to dash across the track with him.

This is just an insight into the complete chaos that is going to be the Olympics. Already over budget for security, and with such unrest in this country about poverty i can see an awful lot more of this and much much worse.

It's a shame this one man spoiled the Boat race after all the hard work and training one man doing something very silly, he needs to be punished otherwise all our sporting events will be at the mercy of every crack pot in this country and we have plenty of crack pots if there is just a ticking off then more and more people will spoil events like the Boat Race Rugby Internationals weekend football matches etc, proper protests please we are a Free Country.

That wasn't a man - it was a mental defective!
08:29 AM on 04/08/2012

A brave man with principles, doing what we are aloud to do or used to be, make protestations. He is right, the elitists and intellectuals are destroying societies all over the globe. The only ones they look after are themselves, the evidence is in our faces everyday. No matter what crime they have committed, they are immune with impunity. They lie better than anyone and get away with it, so do tell, what good are they to ordinary people.....

I think the bottom line here is, the security system failed.
He should have been spotted much earlier,
and taken out the water.
He could have been a terrorist, or a person with a personal
grudge against one, or several rowers.
The possibilities are endless.
Neverless security failed.
It now makes me worry ,about the games ahead.
