A 60-year-old man died while trying to rescue his son after he was swept into the sea, police said today.

The men had been fishing on a Cornwall beach when the 27-year-old son was swept into the sea this morning.

But as his father tried to pull him to safety with a life belt, he too was pulled in.

Both men were pulled from the water by coastguards about half an hour later, but the father had died.

The BBC reports that the son's condition is unknown.

Devon and Cornwall Police said the men, who are both from Cornwall, were visiting family in the area and had been fishing at Tregardock beach near Delabole.

The force said they were alerted by the coastguard of an incident at about 8.38am today.

"Two men, a father and son, had been fishing at the beach but as they left, a wave swept the son into the sea," a spokesman said.

"The father threw him a life belt, but as he was pulling him to safety, another wave washed the father into the sea.

"The two were in the water for about 30 minutes before being rescued, but the father was later declared deceased."

The spokesman added: "This is a tragic incident with the quick actions of the father saving his son."

He said immediate next of kin had been informed and the incident will be referred to the coroner.

My message to this family is I would have loved my father who died at 49 that if he had to die.. to have died in a heroic way as this mans father has done... my father died as a result of pit disease a waste of human life and pointless ... a man I didn't get to know....or spend enough time with... I send my love and sympathy to all concerned...time will help but never cure your loss...be proud of this wonderful mans sacrifice and celebrate his unselfishness... what a wonderful man he must have been to know and share your time with... Bless you all..x

This is the ultimate sacrafice, a parent giving up their life for a child (on matter of age), my deepest sympathy to this very sad family, I pray they come to terms with their loss. May the Dad rest in peace safe in God's arms.

It's a terribly sad story, but I'm sure fathers on here will agree that when your time is up , dying saving your child must be the best way to go.
I hope the family can take some comfort knowing that he was a brave man.

This story hits home as 31 years ago my father drowned in the cornish sea .My brother and dad were swimming in crantock bay when the tide turned .My brother being younger managed to swim to safety but my dad sadly lost is life .He never got to see any of his children marry or see the grandchildren. It as since had a profound effect on all the families lives. While for the family in this story the lost is extremely raw and you will never forget it does ease in time but the reminder of of your great loss will never leave you.So i wish you all strength on your very hard journey ahead .

I remember comment from my mother when we were on cross channel ferry. My baby was in car seat and my husband had her near the edge, I told him get further back because if the baby falls in I will have to jump in after, my mother said then I will have to jump in after you. Most likely in that instance we would have all drowned. It doesn't bear thinking about. RIP dad. Young man your father died trying to save you, which is exactly the action you would take if it was your son so please do not feel guilty.

As a cornishman and lived here on and off most of my life I can say that no one treats any part of the coast here with complacency...not even hardened fishermen or seamen of any kind....they will all tell you the same...do not take it lightly, fear and respect the sea at all times, its not a playground, and although I do not know the details of this incident I am wondering if they talked to local anglers where to fish from. In any case its very sad, but will be repeated, thats guaranteed

What a sad story and what sensible people having a life belt, what a brave man the father was May he Rest in Peace and my prayers are for the son that he may make a full recovery. My condolences also to the family of the father. Any parent would do the same for their son as this father did for his son.

This story sounds like a real tradgedy , They had taken safety precautions in having the life belt on hand and yet were still ovewellmed while pursuing a sport they must have mutual enjoyed .I wish a speedy recovory to the son and condolences to the remaining family .

so sad. but that is what parents do. no matter what age your children, they are for life, and a father or mother would willingly give their life for their children. just hope the son is ok.
