Amanda Knox Case: Meredith Kercher's Father To Publish Book About Daughter's Murder

PA/Huffington Post UK  |  Posted: 9/04/2012 08:17 Updated: 9/04/2012 08:47

A book by the father of murdered student Meredith Kercher about the killing that robbed him of his young daughter hits the shelves this month.

Entitled Meredith: Our Daughter's Murder and the Heartbreaking Quest for the Truth, John Kercher's account of his loss comes six months after Amanda Knox walked free from prison in Italy, acquitted of the crime.

While a number of books on the murder case that grabbed international attention have already been published, this will be the first to emerge from a Kercher family member.

Available from 26 April, it gives the 21-year-old's father the chance to tell his story at least six months before American Knox, from Seattle, tells hers.

Publisher HarperCollins acquired the rights to Knox's memoir for a reported £2.5m and have tentatively scheduled its publication for 2013.

John Kercher's book comes out six months before Amanda Knox publishes her account

While Knox's book promises a "full and unflinching account of the events that led to her arrest in Perugia and her struggles with the complexities of the Italian judicial system," Mr Kercher's will celebrate his daughter's life.

The 304-page work is also billed as "a father's story of losing a beloved daughter, and the first account of the torment the family have suffered and their ongoing quest for justice".

In it, he describes the moment he learnt that the young woman whose death in the Italian university town had been widely reported was his daughter.

"I hadn't been able to get through to Meredith on her mobile, which was very unusual, but I tried to keep calm by telling myself the victim couldn't possibly be Meredith," he wrote.

"The call eventually came from the foreign desk of the Mirror newspaper, from a young girl I hadn't spoken to before. That call ended my world as I knew it...

"I shall never forget her words. 'The name going round Italy is Meredith.' I dropped the phone. I didn't believe it. Not my beautiful Meredith."

Although Miss Kercher's family have spoken out previously, they have given few media interviews and kept a far lower profile than Knox's family as they struggled with their grief.

But Miss Kercher's sister Stephanie appeared on Italian television show Porta a Porta in September to lament that Meredith had been "completely forgotten" since her death, with the spotlight focused relentlessly on photogenic Knox and her high-profile court battle.

Mr Kercher, a writer and journalist, did not attend the medieval courtroom where Knox and her Italian ex-boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, were finally acquitted of the murder in October, although other Kercher family members were present.

University of Leeds exchange student Miss Kercher, from Coulsdon in Surrey, was found dead on 2 November 2007 in her bedroom at the house in the Umbrian hilltop town she shared with Knox and others.

Her throat had been slit and her semi-naked body was partially covered by a duvet.

Knox, also studying in the town, was sentenced to 26 years' imprisonment and Sollecito to 25, but both strenuously protested their innocence from behind bars and were acquitted on appeal.

Miss Kercher's family said afterwards it was almost "back to square one" for them and that the search would go on "to find out what truly happened".

Ivory Coast-born drifter and small-time drug dealer Rudy Guede was also jailed for the murder after being prosecuted in a separate, fast-track trial and remains in prison.

As shown in the section "[N] of your friends Commented on this article", BillyDelyon posted the following 2 days ago:

"Why [Where?] are my 2 replies to Chunks character assassination of
distinguished FBI special agent Steve Moore? They show up in my
profile comments, but not actually here in the discussion? Why
is this? Between posts being deleted and others just seemingly
disappearing into the void, I'm starting to think the UK
doesn't want any kind of discussion at all in these Meredith
Kercher Sollecito Knox related discussions... Very anti
discussion..."

I clicked on the link to this comment in order with the intention to favorite the comment, and low and behold I got

I challenge the UK HuffPo moderators to clarify just how BillyDelyon's comment was an attack or insult on another user or public figure. When comments of this sort are taken down, one has to wonder about the HuffPo (moderator's?) agenda here!

Just curious if the moderators here in the UK discussions are proud of the way this discussion looks? You can't go 8 posts without a deleted post, I think someone needs to loosen their belt a little bit...

Posts from both colpevisti and innocentisti that do not break any rules that I can see are being deleted. Yet, I also see posts in HuffPo that clearly break rules being allowed to remain. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it.

The Kercher family is a perfect example of class, dignity and truth - something that is not for sale, something that money can not buy.

It must have taken a lot of courage to write this book. To lose someone so close to you under such horrific circumstances must be indescribably awful. The Sydney Herald also had an excellent article on the subject:

"But John Kercher has gone a step further. ''So Meredith'', he writes to his dead daughter, ''this book is for you, and all the people who loved and love you still.''"

I think it's a case of a father working through his own grief and wanting his daughter to be remembered. I think it's a case of a father being convinced that his daughter was murdered by someone and unable to come to terms with the fact that they were acquitted because he is so emotionally (and understandably) wrapped up in hating them and wanting to see them punished that he cannot accept they are innocent. By accepting their innocence, he feels as if he is somehow betraying his daughter because he's been told from day one that they are guilty by the police, the prosecutors, his daughters' friends, and his friends/co-workers at the tabloids. To even comtemplate that they were all wrong is somehow dishonorable to his daughter's memory. Even though I don't agree with his belief in in RS and AK's guilt, I can understand how he cannot accept their acquittal.

Sanfran~ you continue to twist the facts, so I don't think you should be so quick to make such an accusation. You perpetually and continually emote "sadness for the victim", "she blamed the black man", and whatever other attempts your feeble mind can come up with to somehow justify your postion, but you do it with only a small handful of the facts.

I kindly & slowly walked you up to the facts of police and prosecutorial misconduct in this case to give you a different perspective and help you better understand how much of this has been twisted by the media and have been delivered to them via the police & prosecution, and what was your response to me? .......................................Nothing. You have lost all credibility, if you ever had any.

Vinno~ This is more of a curiousity for me than anything else. Is your change in behavior attributed to us being over here on the UK site, or something else? I am just curious for the reason behind you dropping your immature personal attacks and stalking--not complaining.

Nows it time to look at the old score board, we had B of tea, never had a bucket of tea, must be a new thing, my tea is made in a cup, or being real posh, I will make it in a tea pot..
Now down to the old score board.
SF is back to blaming the blackman, seeing we went thought so many a times, its on her wish list.
Vinno, makes a list of unproven evidence before the murder, but then cleams that is true evidence.
TY has gone on holiday.
so in the end the truth spoke out real loud,Amanda and Raff had nothing to do with the nasty murder of Meredith Kecher.
Just one question for JK, what was RG doing in the cottage, he had no key, he only knew amanda and your daughter in passing by way, who let him in or was it he did let himself in via the window,
Seeing Amanda and Raff was having a get together you know that nasty word it is called sex, at his flat, who let rudy in?, or did he let himself in.
Guilty = 0
None guilty = 0
The truth = 1

You've got your wires crossed, Zeb - Knox is the one who blamed the black man (accusing her totally innocent black boss Patrick Lumumba of the terrible murder of Meredith Kercher); she was convicted by the first court and the second appeals court, and served prison time for her lies. Much like Casey Anthony who also served prison time for her lies and misleading the police.

Twisting facts around doesn't change the facts.

>Twisting facts around doesn't change the facts.K

Something I'd wish you'd come to recognize youself, Frannie.

You like to imply that Knox accused her "blackboss" (that's become one word for you as you never say just "boss") because he was black, while conveniently forgetting that it wasn't because he was BLACK but because the police misinterpreted her text to him. It was the police who insisted she was "protecting someone" and kept insisting she was meeting Lumumba. You ignore that the police already suspected a black man was involved because of the fiber found in MK's hand which they thought was a black hair. You ignore the police's own racism exposed when Lumumba said they called him a "dirty black" upon his arrest. You simply ignore all that does not support your need to turn this into a case of racism on Knox's part.

Wow..yet another mention of Anthony. At least you left out OJ this time. You're slipping. However, Anthony did not retract her lies mere hours later. She continued to tell them month after month. Nor did Anthony contend she was coerced into saying things that weren't true by the police. Nor was Anthony told things would be worse for her if she got a lawyer during her interrogation. How do we know that? Because Anthony's interrogations were recorded unlike Knox's. How odd that only that crucial interrogation went unrecorded when they police had even recorded her in the police waiting room ealier that same night.

Sadly, the truth has been there the whole time. If it weren't for the wild imagination of prosecutor Mignini, and the implicit involvement of Massei, people would not be still questioning whether Amanda & Raffaele were involved. It is really a simple case against Rudy Geude and could have been an open and shut case if they had simply followed the evidence instead of pursuing what they 'believed' to be true.
17:31 on 24/04/2012
Um...
If it wasn't for Knox's incredible behaviour on the morning Meredith's body was discovered, if it wasn't for the changing alibis, if it wasn't for cell phone and computer records that showed her and Sollecito were not being truthful, if it wasn't for her confession to being at the scene of the crime, if it wasn't for her accusing an innocent man, if it wasn't for the bathmat footprint, if it wasn't for her lamp being found in Meredith's room, if it wasn't for the email home describing events differently to what she told the police, if it wasn't for the incredible break-in that makes absolutely no sense, etc etc etc etc,
Yep it's all Mignini and Massei!!! You forgotten about the other judges that have studied this case??

I was looking through your "if-it-wasn't-for" statements for the one piece of evidence that proved the presence of the accused in the murder room, in the apartment, in the cottage, and in the neighborhood at the time of the murder.  Did I miss it?

There is no specific or set way a person should 'act' when their roommate has been murdered, but no, Amanda did not help herself. There alibis were repeated multiple times, corroborating each other, without change, until the police began manipulating them, and even then the specificity did not change. The cell and computer records only show a limit of early morning activity, it does not show or indicate any activity that is related to the crime. It was a false accusation that also falsly implicated herself and was quickly retracted. There is no 'benefit' as implied to the false accusation, because it also included her. The footprint is Rudy's, the lamp has no bearing on the case and her email home has no probative value either. You have a bunch of circumstantial evidence that amounts to nothing in relation to the crime. A known break in artists DNA was found all over the crime scene, but you and others would rather believe a wild tale about a staged break in--who again is making no sense?????

Unfortunately Knox will never be sent back to Italy, and it will not be shocking when the Supreme Court sides with the appeals court as well. Not that this isnt important, but I think Italy has a LOT more problems. Like a possible default.
