Raf Fleet Grouded
The RAF planes were grounded due a technical fault

A fleet of RAF surveillance planes has been grounded after a technical fault was discovered on one of the craft, the Ministry of Defence said on Saturday.

Six Boeing Sentry E3D aircraft are temporarily out of service as a precautionary measure after the fault was discovered on a routine inspection at RAF Waddington in Lincolnshire.

A Ministry of Defence spokeswoman said: "A routine inspection on an E3D aircraft at RAF Waddington has revealed a technical issue with one of the in-service aircraft.

"Routine E3D operations have been temporarily suspended pending further engineering investigation.

"There is no loss of operational capability."

The spokeswoman stressed that the Sentry is one of a range of aircraft capable of conducting surveillance and other options, including five Sentinel R1 aircraft, are being utilised.

Reminds me of the old messages we used to get on the TV saying that 'Due to a technical fault service will be resumed as soon as possible'.

The RAF Sentry and Sentinal
are two DIFFERENT aircraft and carryout totally DIFFERENT task. So yes the RAF are like DUCKS OUT OF WATER.
Bring back the NIMROD.

The RAF is just like the ROYAL NAVY, no Aircraft Carriers.

Oh The Penny has just dropped. I know why THE CAMERON is saving money on our FORCES.

HE wants to build another O2 ARENA ( THE DOME ) before he gets kicked out of office, just like THATCHER.

I'm sick of hearing of our forces using foreign equipment yet time and time again we see American dross incorporated into our defence systems.

The Sentinel R1 aircraft in reserve is built by Raytheon, yet another British household name (NOT)

This is the clearest example of how and why successive British Governments are commiting us (I prefer dooming us) to be the next US state - perish the thought.

In about 8-10 years we are going to have one and a bit aircraft carriers that will be no more than exotic leviathans until the US Joint Strike Fighter finally emerges - memories abound of our TSR2 and the US white elephant F111 fiasco. Don't we ever learn?

here, here. have to agree totally. our boffins can create awesome aircraft of our own if the govt muppets just let them. this is what we get for buying crap yank planes

I refer you to my comment to the op
12:11 PM on 04/15/2012

oh come on get real....just look up the history of the Nimrod AEW3 (the British developed alternative) to see why we eventually bought the Boeing E3..the Nimrod version was ten years in development and a billion quid spent and it didn't work and showed no future signs of doing so either....our forces need the best equipment available that works..sometimes what we build in this country isn't the best and doesn't work

Virtually all overruns and overspends have been due to the MoD project managing the projects - I've been present when an MoD project manager admitted that they were incompetent and that they continued to change requirements up to the point of delivery through indecision and poor controls.

This indecision was sometimes politically driven to justify purchase of sub-standard foreign alternative equipment procurement contracts (eg TSR2 and F111). Exisitng British designs cancelled in favour of predicted foreign (mainly US) alternatives does not sound like good management of our hard-earned money.

The Nimrod is a good example of changes in specification introduced to deliberately kill off a credible British design.

Why is Lord Carey surprised? Doesn't he read the Bible? Jesus said that many would be persecuted in His name. Shouldn't he accept is as part of the package? Stop whining.

You posted this on the wrong one or has Huff closed the posts for Lord Carey article. I do agree with you yes as Christians we are told to expect persecution.

Damn rubber bands keepr breaking... shoulda kept the Nimrod
07:31 AM on 04/15/2012
except the Nimrod version built to perform the same mission was a 1 billion pound failure
07:37 AM on 04/15/2012
the Nimrods didn't perform the role the E3 does
08:38 PM on 04/15/2012
The E3 isn't performing at the moment...

I'm sure they have cover but why announce it formally? If all of my warplanes were out of action my enemies might well guess or spy electronically but I dont think I'd announce it as a "Guess what fellas? I've no defenses so come anytime you fancy!"

After the Nimrod accident where the MOD took an enormous amount of flack from the media, its best to be upfront. Go and google what the platform does and you will see that there is no immediate risk.

Fortunately the fault was found before any fatalities.
