'Asma Assad Must Help End Syrian Bloodshed': UN Wives Release YouTube Petition

Posted: 18/04/2012 10:37 Updated: 18/04/2012 12:02   PA

The wives of the British and German representatives to the United Nations have released a video calling on the wife of the Syrian president to help stop the country's violence.

The video, released on video-sharing website YouTube, asks viewers to sign a petition urging Asma Assad to speak out against the bloodshed.

The online petition has so far received more than 2,000 signatures.

The four-minute video was produced by Huberta von Voss Wittig, wife of Germany's UN ambassador, Peter Wittig; and Sheila Lyall Grant, wife of Sir Mark Lyall Grant, the UK's UN ambassador.

The video contrasts pictures of the stylish, British-born Mrs Assad with graphic photos depicting Syria's conflict and its victims, many of whom are children.

It is accompanied by an open letter which also acts as the script to the video.

It reads: "Stand up for peace, Asma. Speak out now. For the sake of your people. Stop your husband and his supporters. Stop being a bystander. No one cares about your image. We care about your action."

Escalating violence in Syria has dimmed hopes that the fighting, which the UN says has caused the deaths of more than 9,000 people, could come to an end soon.

Last month Mrs Assad was banned from travelling to the EU. In February she declared she would stand by her husband, in an email sent via an intermediary to The Times.

It read: "The president is the President of Syria, not a faction of Syrians, and the First Lady supports him in that role.

"The First Lady's very busy agenda is still focused on supporting the various charities she has long been involved with and rural development as well as supporting the President as needed."

In a statement, Sheila Lyall Grant and Huberta von Voss Wittig said: "We strongly believe in Asma's responsibility as a woman, as a wife and as a mother. As the vocal female Arab leader that she used to be, as a champion of female equality, she cannot hide behind her husband."

They added: "Many women in Syria have been victims of the ongoing violence. Many of them have, however, taken the risk of speaking out and standing up for their freedom during the year long demonstrations. We are asking Asma Assad to take a risk too and to say openly: Stop the bloodshed, stop it right now."

Earlier today Foreign Secretary William Hague criticised Mr Assad's regime while speaking in the House of Commons.

He told Labour's Ian Murray (Edinburgh S): "You are quite right to raise doubts about the intentions of the regime, they have complied in the most grudging way possible with the ceasefire and not yet met all of its terms.

"They continued to kill as many people as they could in the opposition until the last possible moment."

Haven't had the chance read the other comments. Nevertheless, they may have already said the same as me.

It seems not just a non-story but almost a desperate bizarre one. Does anyone with an iota of a brain cell think if Assad's wife either cares of what the UN's wives' views are or will actually have any influence over her despotic husband when the actual UN envoys have not swayed him from slaughtering his own people.

Did I not recall reading 'leaked' emails of Asma trying to buy expensive items from Harrods via friends in London whilst her own people were being butchered. If I didn't know better, one would think that Alistair Campbell was still around and was colluding with the West and the Americans to put this PR story out as a sequel to his sexed up dossier fro Blair. Or maybe it's Max Clifford trying to divert our attention from Cowell's forthcoming biography.

It beggars belief that AOL have actually given this some space and sad people like me are irked enough to comment!

Go on a trip to Syria and have a woman to woman talk, we don't need to know about it .

How many of you will condemn the father of your children publicly ? unless of course this is just some show or blackmail. The wife of Gaddaffi's heir apparent , I understand is english why didn't anybody speak to her?
The wives ot United Nations what does that make other wives across the globe.

I dont want to minimise the action they have taken in appealing to AA but it begs the question when can we expect this sort of action being directed towards other leaders wives. These UN wives are strangely silent over Iraq, Afghanistan and Palestine to name three. Whatever else it shows AA is no longer in with the in crowd and probably never was. This is just about the most distasteful hippocracy I've ever witnessed and thats saying something in this day and age.

Unsure about your stand point on this....are you suggesting they should have written to Saddam Husseins wife?
06:12 PM on 04/18/2012
No he was referring to the wife who loves LV Handbags and the cow girls,Mrs Powell did a good job with hers after he accepted the 25 minutes was a lie. They wanted him to run for the big job she made him refuse.
How do we know if AA has played a part in helping her Husdband to accept kofi Annan's plan that the others at the UN scoffed at 8 months ago.

Assads wife might if she feels strongly enough that she has nothing to fear, opt to leave the country and speak out against the violence. The suggestion that she can somehow end the violence or that either Assad or those opposed to him would take the slightest bit of notice of her opinion is to put it mildly, naive!

It's not likely that Assad can control whats going on. Once the madness gets a grip it becomes a process out of control. All the Assads can do is cut and run if they want to influence whats happening but until exile becomes the possible and the better option for them personaly nothing will change.

Time for Bashar and Asma 's arrest.

That will stop the bloodshed they've demanded.

"calling on the wife of the Syrian president to"
step away from the chandelier shopping, and get a grip on that reality but a short way away.

"urging Asma Assad to speak out against the bloodshed."
Could prove as productive as telling Marie Antoinette that the people have no hot pasties.

"many of whom are children."
Humanity’s children.

"Stand up for peace, Asma. Speak out now. For the sake of your people."
For the sake of the species. Peace.

"We care about your action"
Lift a finger, and elevate the entire planet to another realm.

"The president is the President of Syria"
He is there for the sole purpose of protecting his people. From his divisive polices and from themselves.

"They continued to kill as many people as they could"
A crime, equal in the comparison of its final outcome, to killing the interweb William.

In public she's got nothing else to do then agree with her husband like every good Muslim woman should (according to the vast majority of Muslim men). Maybe behind closed doors she's allowed to utter some criticism, but she also knows, when her husband goes down, she goes down with him. Assad is just fighting to stay in control, how many times have we seen it before. Gadaffi was the previous one to do it, we all know how that ended.

According to an email released by WikiLeaks, the United States, United Kingdom and France already have plans in place to launch an action against the Syrian regime as shown here:

http://viableopposition.blogspot.com/2012/03/what-may-lie-ahead-for-syria.html

Perhaps the House of Assad will soon realize that they may be deposed through the same violent means that changed both Libya and Iraq.

Hard to say what power she actually has. No doubt she has influence over her husband but there seems to be a measure of uncertainty about his ability, even if he was willing, to rein in the hardliners from his father's regime.

Asma didn't know how to stop her husband from detroying Homs, her father's birthpalce, yet he's very much alive and well, too?

sure....... okay.............

Didn't know how to or wasn't sufficiently concerned? After all her father is comfortably ensconced in Londonistan, so why would she worry about Homs?
