Alex Salmond Is A 'Caledonian Hitler,' Says TV Historian David Starkey

The Huffington Post UK  |  By Posted: 19/04/2012 09:31 Updated: 19/04/2012 20:22

Historian Dr David Starkey has compared Scottish first minister Alex Salmond to Nazi German leader Adolf Hitler.

"If you think about it, Alex Salmond is a democratic Caledonian Hitler, although some would say Hitler was more democratically elected," he said.

"[For him] the English, like the Jews, are everywhere" he added to gasps from the audience.

Starkey was speaking at a debate, hosted by the Bow Group think tank, on the teaching of British history in UK schools.

"England has shaped the world and now the world has shaped England" he said, "every other country focuses on its own history and it's absurd that we don't."

Teaching should, he said, "unashamedly focus on political history. Social history is...mere sentiment".

The British needed positive teaching of their history, Starkey argued, to preserve national identity.

"English national identity is too important to be left to the loons of the BNP and the EDL" he said.

"The government is absolutely hamstrung, as was Gordon Brown, in defining what it is to be British" he added.

Starkey lamented that in the wake of Enoch Powell's controversial Rivers of Blood speech, it was "no longer" possible to speak about nationalism.

The SNP has reacted with fury to Starkey's comments. A spokesman for Alex Salmond told HuffPost UK that Starkey's remarks were "offensive nonsense".

“This offensive nonsense is actually an insult to Scotland and to the people of Scotland.

“David Starkey is getting dafter and crankier with every passing day – his litany of offensive comments are designed only to provoke outrage, and thankfully England is blessed with a great number of far better historians than him.

We can count ourselves lucky that David Starkey is nowhere near the teaching of history in Scottish schools.

“In the words of Robert Burns, Scots will ‘look and laugh’ at this nonsense.”

Meanwhile, SNP Parliamentarian Jamie Hepburn attacked Starkey on Twitter.

Jamie Hepburn
For someone who is in many ways a clever man, David Starkey is an idiot

And Murdo Fraser, who ran for leadership of the Scottish Tories, said "Would someone please tell David Starkey to keep his trap shut?" (See below for more reaction)

Starkey is no stranger to making controversial comments. Last year he was criticised after claiming "the whites have become black", when discussing the London riots. He also described Scotland, on BBC's Question Time, as a "feeble little country".

Tory MP Dr Kwasi Kwarteng, who was speaking alongside Starkey, said there was a greater need for teaching history.

"We're the only country other than Albania that doesn't have compulsory teaching of national history ... we're in an awful place" he said.

Kwarteng suggested there was a "case" for the compulsory teaching of history up to 16 years old.

I am a Scotsman. I am no supporter of the Union. I quite like Alex Salmond. I do not, however, think he is the be all and end all of the nationalist cause. Your point about oor David is well made, He is a bit daft, as you say.

I'm an Englishwoman and a supporter of the Union. I don't like Alex Salmond, but I do like Scotland. David Starkey is a twit of the highest order - he adores sensationalism, being the centre of controversy. Rather than that making him a brave political contrarian I imagine he thinks he is, he just comes off looking like a drama queen. I don't have to like Alex Salmond to think comparisons to a mass-murdering imperialist dictator are utterly moronic. Why do the media still give fatuous windbags like Starkey any air? Leave him to his own devices along with all the other crazies.

Well Starkey has certainly made history in my family. We are now apparently jewish neo-nazis who voted for a fascist dictator. Yes I know that is not what he said EXACTLY. But the comparison with Hitler is deeply insensitive. Next he'll be saying tactical nuclear weapons for removing tree stumps. But the point is if he is this lacking in judgment what does he, mean by history? Likely a manufactured creation myth little better than propaganda with the real history only taught to the elite. A patronising fabrication to manage the Proles. No doubt Niall Ferguson will volunteer to write a textbook for the "education of the lower classes". Niall Ferguson's re-evaluation of history strays towards "Historical Revision Institute" territory. One wonders if he'll end his career another David Irving, all the nasty killing and exploitation omitted just glorious imperialism. Is this to be Starkey's new history education the political necessity of working class poverty and the massive loss of life on the Western Front? Back to the mindset of the Pals Battalion recruits?

Perhaps the Comparison comes in because the SNP and the Nazi party are right wing parties. Perhaps because the Scots constant mood about the English and in a lot of cases hate them for unjust reasons, the Comparison is there against the Nazi's hating the Jews and other non nationalist. Perhaps the Comparison on being more democratic is that the Nazi's gained more seats and votes in there elections then the SNP has. He also said Caledonian, so he is basically saying a Scottish Hitler not that he is Hitler. As for the working class poverty and WWI what does that got to do with anything?

adamb2,

You say:

"Perhaps the Comparison comes in because the SNP and the Nazi party are right wing parties."

Your political map must be a tad skewed from the norm if you think that the SNP is a right wing party comparable, in any way to the Nazis. On that basis the Conservatives would see the Nazis as wimps, Labour would see them as bedfellows and the Liberals would form a coalition with them. It doesn't really work now, does it?

We could do with some reasoned and thought out criticism of Starkey, I have not seen much of that yet on here. True, he is a loud mouth who likes the sound of his own voice as many other academics do. The truth is he has spoken a lot of sense, maybe it could have been couched in better, more diplomatic language but why should he be polite to those whose venom towards the english as espoused by Slamond and followed by this poltroon's acolytes. Scotland would be so much better off without this purloiner of the truth and the scots' votes.

as far as the teaching of history ,free speech and liberal arts he is correct..in every way..england i take it is the only country apart from the yemen without a constitution,or one that is made by its own gover'ment..hence why we cannot extradite terrorists...a lame judicial system.six to 10 prisons short ..each should be capable of processing at least 100.000 people per annum .just to get started on the mess we are in....i li9ve in the or one of the most corrupt to the core boroughs of london..yes the same one as the person who needs a ticket to jordon lives in..2400 arranged marriages in one year at the town hall an immigration judge who corrupted and allowed up to 90,000 illegal immigrants in to the country and had up to 10 million in dubious funds..what ever happened to him after he was bailed...if we had or remembered some facts and laws broken we may even call it history...ifeel the guy in norway on trail is just the tip of the iceberg as to what could happen in europe if we do not come to terms with crime and punishment...

Why anyone views the views of the lunatic fascist bigot that is David Starkey as important is beyond me. However, he is using the media in the same way as any other celebrity, in his case through gratuitous insults but is damaging to those whose poltics are right of centre. So long may he continue and make people realise how vicious some of the rightwing of the Tory Party actually are.

What is British and what is English? They are jusr words to know your facial identity. If you look white, he/she could be from Europe or other parts of the world but white, it does not say on his/her face, that they are English or German, Scottish or else so people lives in Britain are British and within Britain one could ask so the reply would be I am English, Scottish, Irish, Polish, Russian, Dutch, Portugees and so on. Well, BNP and EDL and rest like them, they all racist and nazi's a indentity of Hitler SS nothing more.

Ask an man in England what nationality he is and he'll probably say British. Ask a man in Scotland and they will certainly say Scottish. Why is that I wonder? I think the English are proud of their association with the Scottish, Welsh and Irish. I personally believe that together we are greater than the sum of our parts and am in this respect proud to be British.

The name 'British' originated from the British branch of the Celtic people who colonised England and Wales from what is now Brittany in north-western France. The Welsh, Breton and Cornish languages originated from the old British Celtic language that was spoken throughout England and Wales prior to the Roman Occupation. The Gaelic group of Celts settled in Ireland then Scotland and the Isle of Man, originating in Galicia in north-western Spain. The Romans followed by the vikings then the Anglo-Saxons pushed the British-speaking peoples into the west. Because of that I consider the Welsh and the Cornish to be the most British while I consider myself to be English before I am British due to my Anglo-Saxon background. As for the break up of the United Kingdom, it started in 1921 when 26 counties of Ireland were given home rule, later leaving the Commonwealth and becoming a republic.

A great lesson on how to encourage Scotland to stay part of the Union.David Starky is suffering from Florida's disease. This cause you to have delusions of grandeur and project all your fears onto another person to hide your mental instability.
Personally i think the first minister should sue for defamation of character and Starky should be arrested for hate speech. He is an historian and should know better than to categorize a democratically elected leader as a mass murdering Catholic psychopath

Agree with bits of your post @Gunderan - Starky is a so so historian (his speciality being the Elizabeth 1 era) and sees himself as a constitutional expert (not so - he just yaks a lot), nobody takes his views seriously and I am surprised he has generated almost 500 comments mostly mud slinging and off topic. I am a proud Englishman as are Scots rightly proud of being Scottish (same for Welsh and Irish - and quite rightly too). On the subject of big Eck, he is never anything more than the perfect Gentleman, interviewers often comment on his even temper and good grace. I have read and studied his words and deeds prompted by a certain Scottish friend and he has NEVER insulted or portrayed any hatred of the English - ever, Only Wasteminster's weasels. I only have one comment to make on him. I wish Wasteminster had 600 Alex Salmonds sat in the commons as you wouldnt be able to select a party - imagine 600 MP's telling the truth, abiding by their promises and delivering the excellent services he manages to deliver in Scotland. Now wouldnt that be something?? (and please - proud Englishman does NOT mean BNP, EDL or any other extremist party - just proud of my country and on the 23rd I will be celebrating Georgemas as I do every year).

I too wish we had more like him.
I am not proud of being English as i have genetic roots to other parts of the UK lol.Besides being treated badly by the education system ripped of by both business and goverment,by NHS and i could go on.Being part of a nation that sold out to short term greed and failed economic policies is in my book nothing to be proud of.

I am no fan of Alex Salmond but I have seen no evidence that he has a gang of thugs like the S.A. or has any plans to conquer the world or commit genocide. Have you?
