A 19-year-old Brightonian could be poised to steal Justin Bieber’s pop crown after his debut single overtook the Canadian crooner’s latest chart release.
Conor Maynard’s single Can’t Say No entered Radio 1’s official chart this weekend at number 2, ousting Bieber’s Boyfriend.
The move seems to have sent Bieber’s effort into a tailspin – by Monday afternoon it had plummeted down to number 10. And no doubt ready to do battle with Bieber’s army of “Beliebers”, the singer has his very own female fan base of “Mayniacs”.
Maynard, who began his career by uploading music from his bedroom has some help in his ascent – notably from Lily Allen and Kylie Minogue, who have both tweeted support for his first release.
He told the Independent: “It’s pretty amazing for the single to go in so high. I’m still figuring out all this works.”
