Prince Charles And Camilla Visit Isle Of Man Ahead Of Queen's Jubilee

Charles And Camilla Visit Isle Of Man

The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall delighted schoolchildren on Thursday by starting a race for the cycling-mad youngsters at the club where Olympic medal hope Mark Cavendish began his path to sporting stardom.

Charles and Camilla, along with the eager cyclists, all braved a windswept and rain-lashed bike track on the Isle of Man.

They had come to cheer the visitors, braving atrocious weather, at the Island's National Sports Centre.

Cycling is an unofficial 'national sport' on the Island, with both Mark Cavendish, the BBC Sports Personality of the Year and road race World Champion, and World Champion team pursuit cyclist Peter Kennaugh, both from the island.

The pair will be flying the flag for Team GB at this summer's London Olympics.

Kennaugh was on hand to meet Charles and Camilla, who spoke to young members of the Team Royal London 360 Isle of Man Cycling Club.

The club in Douglas is where Mark Cavendish cycled as a youngster and is the UK's biggest cycling club, with 560 members.

Charles counted down, "three, two, one", and lowered the Manx flag to start the exhibition cycling race - with the youngsters warned by organisers not to do anything "heroic" in the damp conditions.

The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall are spending most of the day on the Isle as part of the Diamond Jubilee Tour to mark 60 years of the Queen's reign.
