Britain's Got Talent Review: Malaki Comes Good After Wiping Tears Away (PHOTOS)

Posted: 28/04/2012 22:04 Updated: 28/04/2012 22:09

Alesha Dixon revealed her soft side, running onto stage during BGT to comfort nine-year-old Malaki Paul, after he succumbed to nerves.

Malaki showed that it’s hard enough being on stage belting out a Beyonce song on your own, let alone when you're nine.

His mother had been concerned that he would stumble on his version of Listen and, sure enough, the tears soon came. But he battled on after a hug from his mum, and wowed the judges. Walliams and Alesha agreed, ā€œYou’re a total star.ā€ And Simon added, ā€œYou’re brave.ā€ Four yeses (and note no hashtag – was this BGT responding to questions of exploitation of a vulnerable youngster? It was a VERY swift edit away from his tears to a commercial break...)

ALL The Latest From Britain's Got Talent

A little un’ that didn’t need so much looking after was Molly Rainford, 11 from Essex. She sounded shy and told the panel she went to church on Sundays with her nan. And then Simon’s prayers were answered when she started singing One Night Only. Four more yeses.

Organ player/singer Graham was the first one up this week – very likeable, according to Walliams – and ingratiated himself to everyone except Simon, who stopped him halfway, for ā€œsmiling in a weird wayā€. Graham finally cranked into action with a weird churchlike version of La Bamba, which brought the crowd to their feet, but which Simon termed ā€œhideous, like vanilla icecream and a sausage – they don’t go togetherā€. Graham went sailing through.

New School were neatly turned-out children, polite, school-uniformed and with no wriggling, until the music started, and they kicked off an acrobatic dance routine. (We knew they got the producers’ vote, we saw the hashtag.) Alesha decided, ā€œYou may be little but you mean business.ā€

And Geisha offered something not seen before on BGT – ā€œa message to the peopleā€. This turned out to be Humpty Dumpty, Bjork-lite.

Two buzzers sounded, but ā€œyou’re so out there, I actually really like you,ā€ reported Simon, and Geisha was through. Simon’s afterthought: ā€œBet she’d be fun on a date.ā€

Which of these do you think looks like a winner? Pics of this week's bunch in action...

Roll on 2015!

It's a terrible show and all that's wrong with the celeb "I want it all, even though I haven't earned it" culture. The odd good act doesn't disguise the fact that in general it rewards mediocrity and weirdness. The makers of the show manipulates their audience with the most cynical combination of juvenile editing, mawkish music and displays of staged emotion that I've ever seen.

The pity of it is, is that this tosh seems to entertain a large number of people. Another "medja" bandwagon.

My main worry about that young lad is that he is being used by Simon to try to manipulate the ratings for BGT. Just as he and Max Clifford have been flogging his book series to death through the media. All nonsense but there are enough numpties to believe that rubbish and doesnt Simon know it. The Voice is not brilliant but it is differant and I think theyve managed to get a few singers who are much better than anything Simon has at the moment. Ruth Brown for example is a REAL find. Film of her warming up in rehearsal showed the natural soul in her voice and Tom and his team have the experience not to spoil that. Somthing Simon would definately do in his quest for the "Quick buck!".

Sorry but BGT & Ex-Factor, makes me want to stick my fingers down my throat!
The Voice killed the show, when those 4 judges did that introduction song (terrible!)
Why can't they bring back, professional acts & shows, to entertain prime time Saturday?
Surely the cycle of the wannabe is over & past it's sell by date.

Hello again!

Sorry, but I could not put it better myself. We want real entertainment, not as you put it, 'wannabe', the 'wannabe' culture is well and truly over!

All the Best!

I've read some of your older comments, only to agree! Sorry Totto, I can't pick a fight here even though I can be a bit brutal sometimes.

Go girl go! Keep up your comments!

The nine year old boy, the 11 year old girl and the dancing schoolkids were the best three acts I have seen in many years, common you kids.

I still think the Virgin Talent acts before and after each ad break are the best.

Why was Geisha allowed to 'white up'. If that was a white man 'blacking up' there would be outrage!

I was upset over Hollie Steel's meltdown in the 2009 semi finals of Britain's Got Talent and now we have Malaki Paul losing it on stage. I reccommend to Simon Cowell that a lower age limit of 12 should be imposed for solo performers. Younger children should still be able to take part as part of a group where they will have the support of their peers on stage. Any repeat of the Hollie Steel or Malaki Paul episodes will only lead to people switching off BGT in droves. As last night's show was pre-recorded it may have been best not to feature Malaki's performance at all. In Hollie Steel's case the programme was being broadcast live.

The pressure that must have been on Malaki was enormous . The film crew had been to his home and filmed him which A) suggests that some contestants are favoured and B) put more pressure on him to do well .

If they cut out all the Garbage shots of Judges and backstage and showed the acts this would be a better programme. At the moment they should call it Britains Got Judges or Britains Got Adverts.

And, how much of this kid did we see anyway - the camera is on him, on the judges, on the audience, on the judges again, on Ant and Dec, zooming in, zooming out etc. etc.

I remember the good old days when you could watch an act and the audience would applaud at the end. Now we're forced to endure screaming all the way through.
BTW - notice the make up of the audience - the disparity of men to women - why's that I wonder?
Could it be because women scream higher, which hypes everything?

Years ago, I remember Capital Radio coming in for stick, because the phone - in competetition winners were always women and used to scream when they won. Shortly after this, a few guys strted winning.
Coincidence, hmmmm?

That little boy was incredible. So much courage to break down and then continue like that. Most people would run off stage. Very impressed. On another note- how beautiful is that child? honestly....he looks like an angel.

all part of the act for the judges to pick him watch when he is on again the tyears start to flow?
12:41 AM on 04/29/2012
Thousands of choir boys all over the country could do the same and better had their mothers campained them and many without tears.
Strange how the cameras followed his pre performance preperations, like it was rehearsed?
Still they didn't and his mum did so good luck to him and hopefully next time he will sing in tune.

I also wondered about the pre performance filming ........ They did the same with Molly . How do they know who to follow ?
09:51 AM on 04/29/2012
Exactly.
Of course, it's not fixed, is it ;-p

They devoted a quarter of an hour to this kid - in fairness I thought he was a jolly good singer for a 9 year old, but it does look as if the acts that will go all the way have already been decided upon.
