Ed Balls Warns Of A Possible 'Lost Decade' In The Observer

Britain is facing the prospect of a "lost decade" of sluggish growth and high unemployment if the Government will not change course on the economy, shadow chancellor Ed Balls has warned.

After shock figures showed the economy was back in recession, Mr Balls said there was a risk of prolonged stagnation in the UK like that experienced by Japan in the 1990s.

Prime Minister David Cameron has insisted there will be no change to the coalition's programme of austerity and deficit reduction despite the double-dip.

But Mr Balls told The Observer that lacklustre growth could be an issue for "a very long time".

"I am not predicting years of recession, although we could well be in for a long 'lost decade'-style period of slow growth and high unemployment," he said.

He added there was a danger that "the economy continues to underperform and, Japanese-style, it grows below trend and therefore unemployment stays high".

"That sort of stagnation is consistent with a bit of growth, but not enough, that could go on for a very long time," he added.

Mr Balls challenged Chancellor George Osborne to a live televised debate on how the economy could be pulled out of recession.

"There are big choices to be made about how we get out of this very deep hole," he said.

"We have to find a way to talk this through and try to get to a better place."

Mr Balls said the latest figures proved he had been right to warn that the coalition's strategy was "too far and too fast".

"In politics and especially in economics and politics, when things start to go wrong, the sooner you admit it the better," he said.

"The thing that frustrates me is that for a year is how arrogantly George Osborne has said, 'No my plan will work - you are wrong', and we are a year on and it is now too late."

I do not believe that any government can get us out of the mess we're in. They're all too concerned with their image and how to attract voters, rather than the problems of getting the country working and sorting out the economy. I don't believe a word any of them says, they are a bunch of shysters.

Ed Balls is a hypocrite, he was in the same room when Gordon Brown was pulling on economic levers.

Anything Ed Balls and the Labour party have to try and get the UK out of this latest recession will ultimately make the recession last even longer-they have no cure.
Both Labour and the Tories have no answers to this recession, they are simply waiting for the economic tide to turn in the rest of the world, but we will still be left with a big mountain of debt for their (Labour & Tories) handling of the UK economy if and when the world economic tables turn.

Yes Ed, the government should revese course, and follow the Labour course of the last wo governments. Then they could be just like Greece, Spain, and Italy in a couple of years, instead of waiting until Labour returns to power.

It is not only the decade that has been lost. The lives and well-being of tens of millions of people who did not speculate, were "conservative" financially and paid their way have been flushed down the loo by those who "played" and the governments that facilitated them and bailed them out.

I'm throwing. I saved, invested, acted conservatively, paid my way while others borrowed, spent, walked away from obligation, sold phony securities and lied. They then stole my substance so they could keep their yachts, second homes and private planes. Here's my rock Mr. Fowler.

And I am happy for you to throw a very big rock! My comment was more aimed at Labour and Mr Balls who seem to have forgotten that good people like yourself suffered under Labours mismanagement as we are also now suffering und the Con/Dems and their taxpayer funded Bankers bailout!

When a government gives the peoples money to the banks, and they are giving themselves millions in pay and bonuses you just know its the start of the end ,utilities are ripping everyone off to the tune of 48 /50 % price hikes ,vat on things that were never taxed ,dormant bank accounts grabbed by the government along with the royal mail pension funds ,savings taxed price of fuel going through the roof ,the Euro is the $hitter Greece is broke along with Spain and Italy ,i dont think that any ships or transport companies are registered in this country ,along with a lot of companies ,tens of thousands are loosing their jobs .

Look around you minister and MPs are ripping off the peoples monney to the tune of £400,000 for 12 fig trees ,double dip recession ,you bet yer between the government and the banks they have boned the country out !

Yes, and it was your lot who guided us into it, with your total incompetence and spendthrift ways. How easy it is in British politics, to escape punishment for shoddy workmanship, knowingly of course. By the way, we have not forgotten the disgraceful message left by one of your fools in office. A note was left for the incoming Chancellor stating, sorry there is no money left in the pot. What a pathetic and childish thing to say, as our country was in dire straights by your mismanagment, and you have the nerve to call yourselves the opposition, expecting to be returned to mess up yet again. Let us hope that the apathtic people of Britain, have seen the very dim light of the predictable 3.....Never again,,change is essential.....

To those people who disagree with Labour,History will show you cannot cast people aside on the dole in their tens of thousands, take everything away from the less futunate in our society, take off pensioners, give to the rich, starve our small factories or cash, let off some of our biggest companies from paying taxes, letting the rich aviod taxes or paying as low as 10%,give the rich tax cuts, then go back into recession, perhaps if we had backed Gordon Brown at the time,we to like America who listened to Labour, brought their wayout of recession, would be alot better off today.Does anyone rember the Thatcher period? The tories destroyed British heavy industry, all we are today, is a service industry! With LABOUR, we had the lowest unemployment figures, the lowest interest rates, sure start for are young, new schools for are children, places in our universities for all our children,at a decent cost. If people looked into the good things Labour done for all, rather than tories that just look after a certain few, you will see they are better alternative, than the tories, bnp, uskips! snp or the bed fellows libbies.

Alll of the above done on credit! How come under Liebour youth unemployment DOUBLED during the boom? How come the rich got richer and the poor hardly got any improvment at all? How come the only Tax to be abolished under Liebour was the 10p income tax rate that affected the working poor more than anyone else? The tories may have started to destroy heavy industry but you will find Labour finished it off. Name one big factory opened by Labour in their 13 years? Dont give me labours achievements because there are none!

I was once like you Fred, believed in labour, never a tory, they lie every breakfast time like praying. Labour swamped our country with immigrants, to the point of suffocation. The open abuse they are committing on our country is beyond belief. Labour did nothing to free us from the manacles of the EU junta, and they like the Tories, are the puppets of the Junta. We have no effective government no matter who is elected, because all the predictable 3, do as they are told by their governors in Europe. The rest we know by direct experience, tell me any Brit, who is happy with their current country right now, not many..Apart from the rich in every party. Bliar was a puppet, look how rich he became, so too do they all. They are worthless, gutless, and selfish people we don't know or ever want to.......
