Rolf Harris said he was "thrilled" to receive the Bafta fellowship award

Entertainment veteran Rolf Harris is to be honoured by Bafta with its highest award, a fellowship.

The 82-year-old broadcaster, musician and artist is being recognised for his "outstanding and exceptional contribution to television", the Press Association reported.

Australian Harris has been a regular fixture on TV screens since he signed his first deal with the BBC in 1953.

He will be presented with his fellowship at the Arqiva British Academy Television Awards on 27 May at London's Royal Festival Hall.

Previous recipients have included Lord Bragg, Richard Curtis, Sir David Jason and Sir Bruce Forsyth.

Successive waves have grown up with his programmes which have included Rolf's Cartoon Club, Rolf On Art and Animal Hospital. He has also enjoyed a musical career with chart hits such as Two Little Boys and Sun Arise.

In 2005, he was commissioned to paint a portrait of the Queen by the BBC to celebrate her 80th birthday.

Bafta chairman Tim Corrie said: "Rolf Harris is one of the world's most iconic entertainers. He has huge audience appeal across multiple generations, and we are delighted to honour his contribution to television and the arts."

Harris said: "I'm hugely honoured and very thrilled."

Good old Rolf, well done!!!

Well deserved award after years of pleasure given to young and old alike.

Should be a Knighthood as others have it for less service...your Majesty please respectfully note.

Well tie me Kangaroo down mate, the king of modern art and entertainment Rolf Harris is to receive a BAFTA. No reason he shouldn't claim his award after all he is a veteran of the small screen and indeed a major recording artist..

They should make him an RA

Great bloke, a really, really good artist, appreciated by so many of us 'children who watched him with his passion, fun and good humour'. I'd be happy if he was made a Lord, he could brighten them up a bit too...

08:54 on 02/05/2012

10:53 on 02/05/2012
Because he's Australian not British he could only have an honorary knighthood, like Douglas Fairbanks Jnr received
17:47 on 02/05/2012
point taken but still he deserves to be a sir
08:52 on 02/05/2012
yes he should bea sir loved his tv shows as a kid
08:27 on 02/05/2012
Rolf should be a Sir
09:05 on 02/05/2012
When you look at some of them who have been Knighted you are correct. In saying that being made a Sir does not mean that much as most of us know who actually deserve it and those who do not. If I had my way I would stop the political Knighthoods.

Many Congratulations. Most well deserved person and personality of all in showbiz I can think of. However, as esteemed as this BAFTA award is, why hasn't he yet been given a knighthood ? If anyone deserves that accolade, it is certainly Rolf Harris.
08:16 on 02/05/2012
Yes, what about a knighthood - about time, when you consider the political tossers who normally receive one for doing damn all?
08:08 on 02/05/2012
And what about a knighthood too. The man's a legend. Everyone has grown up with Rolf, he's a one man cabaret. And try buying one of his original art works, they are big bucks. Congratulations Rolf.
10:34 on 03/05/2012
Could only have an honorary Knighthood

Well done cobber!

Nice to see an article about somebody who can be called a celebrity. The evidence that he is a celebrity is in the fact that the word is not used to describe him in the report. Its not necessary as he is well known.

A great entertainer as well, he deserves the award. Well done Rolf.
