Big Ben Name Change To Honour Queen 'Opposed By Almost Half Of Voters'

Posted: 2/05/2012 10:49 Updated: 2/05/2012 10:49

Almost half of Britons are opposed to renaming Big Ben's Clock Tower in honour of the Queen, according to a poll published on Wednesday.

A survey conducted by YouGov showed that 44% oppose changing name of the Clock Tower to Elizabeth Tower for Diamond Jubilee, while 30% support the new name.

MPs have suggested that the tower be renamed and the move is said to have the backing of David Cameron.

Tory Tobias Ellwood is leading the calls for the government to rename the tower in recognition of Her Majesty's "60 years of unbroken public service on behalf of her country".

The Bournemouth East MP said that while most people would probably still call the tower Big Ben, it would be appropriate to change the official name.

"I cannot think of a greater tribute for parliament to bestow than to rename such an iconic landmark as the Clock Tower," he said recently.

According to YoGov, older people older people (60+; 46%) are slightly more likely than younger (18-24s; 37%) to oppose the idea.

And people in London are also more opposed to a change (53%) compared to those in the rest of England, Wales (41-46%) or especially Scotland (39%).

The name change has precedent as the tower at the other end of the Palace of Westminster was originally called the King's Tower, but was renamed Victoria Tower in 1860 in honour of the only other British monarch to have reigned for 60 years.

The move has cross party support with Labour's shadow defence secretary Jim Murphy telling the Daily Mail: "The Queen and the Clock Tower are known throughout the world. It would be brilliant if we could celebrate 60 years of service with a permanent monument to Her Majesty’s dedication and grace."

So far 40 MPs have signed a Commons motion calling on the government to make the change, including former foreign secretaries Jack Straw and Malcom Rifkind.

But the move was attacked by the campaign group Republic, who want to replace the monarchy with an elected head of state.

Republic's chief executive Graham Smith said the MPs' proposing the name change were doing so in order to secure themselves a knighthood.

"Parliament is the home of British democracy and as flawed as that democracy is it must remain a tribute to our democratic values. Associating this institution with the unelected, unaccountable and anti-democratic monarchy is crass and completely inappropriate," he said.

"This is another opportunity for the monarchy to co-opt every institution to its cause. As interest in the monarchy wanes among the wider public a few out of touch MPs are doing their best to shore up its support."

"Perhaps this is just a cynical attempt by these MPs to ingratiate themselves with the palace in the hope of a gong, or to deflect attention from more important matters. Whatever the reason the parliament is for the people, not for the royals."

He added: "I would suggest these MPs should be paying a little more attention to the needs of their constituents, rather than prostrating themselves in front of the most privileged woman in the country."

Big Ben's Clock Tower was recently the subject of a Commons debate after MPs objected to House of Commons plans to charge tourists to climb its steps.

The tower was completed in 1859. Big Ben's clock started ticking on on 31 May of that year and the iconic bell strikes were heard for the first time on 11 July.

It is over 96 metres tall and visitors have to climb 334 steps to reach the belfry. Around 850 cubic metres of stone and 2,600 cubic metres of bricks were used to construct it.

The tower housing Big Ben is to be renamed the Elizabeth Tower in honour of the Queen, the House of Commons has confirmed.

Big Ben is one our most recognisable tourist attractions and in 2008 was voted UK's favourite landmark.

We like the Queen, but think that renaming Big Ben is one of the stupidest ideas we have ever heard. Let's build a new tower, or rename a less important belfry, or perhaps MPs should concentrate on saving us from economic annihilation rather than whipping votes for the unnecessary rebranding of one of our most famous monuments.

So, join us in voting to Save Big Ben.

Big Ben, Big Liz, Big Beth? No No No! Why change the name of something that has been known worldwide for centuries? Yes, we SHOULD have something to commemorate our Queen but it should be something built especially for her and relative to her and the anniversary. The name of the clock tower was named what it is for a reason, so why change it? People wont find it easy to stop calling it Big Ben (and yes I know that is the name of the bell and not the tower) so lets use some common sense here. The Queen deserves something new, something necessary and something that will stand the test of time just as she has and good old Big Ben! Big Ben is as much our history as the Queen is - would we ask her to change her name?

Ok the bell is Big Ben but most people call the clock and its tower Big Ben.A bit of pragmaticism is required here. After all most people refer to a Biro and really it should be referred to as a ball point pen.Biro is the trade name.

Much as I revere the Royal Family and Her Majesty in particular, Big Ben is different it is symbolic and belongs to the nation, I am sure her Majesty would not want it renamed either.

Why the reverence? Can you please explain....

Because of the role she plays as the head or our country, the head of our church, the role she undertakes on a daily basis without complaint and the way she has modernised the current royal family, no other royal in our hitory has changed their way so positivley in such a short space of time, she is magnificent.

The Clock Tower is the name of the famous tower of Parliament - more popularly known as Big Ben. Although often referred to as Big Ben, this is actually the nickname of the bell housed within the Clock Tower - and Big Ben's official name is the Great Bell.

Q. Is it called St Stephen's Tower or the Clock Tower?

A. The name of the tower is the Clock Tower, not St Stephen's Tower. It was called St Stephen's Tower by Victorian journalists. They referred to anything to do with the House of Commons as news from 'St Stephens', as originally MP's used to sit in St Stephen's Hall.

Q. Why is the Clock Tower's bell called Big Ben?

A. The most likley explanation is it was named after Sir Benjamin Hall, First Commissioner for Works, whose name is inscribed on the bell. Another theory is it was named after Ben Caunt, a champion heavyweight boxer.

I have nothing but admiration for the Queen, the antics of her family, however, is a completely different matter.

When the British Empire ruled half the World, even the sycophantic ruling elite never considered changing the name of Big Ben to honour Queen Victoria.

Enough said.
17:03 on 03/05/2012
Sorry why the admiration, please explain,I don't get,is it not just one big joke played on us by the select few.?.....................
17:59 on 03/05/2012
Well said, it is something we all should be proud of. I am glad that we have a Royal Family.
14:38 on 03/05/2012
why change the whole world knows it as BIG-BEN
14:24 on 03/05/2012
Since our MPs and the ruling elite in general have never had opinions that represented the views of the population, they might as well call it what they like. However what all Brits must insist upon doing themselves it to continue to talk about it as Big Ben especially when dealing with tourists or anyone from abroad. Big Ben is the selling name as well as the populist one. The numpties in westminster can call "MPs expenses claims" if they wish, but perhaps that isnt big enough to be representative.

40% of voters say no to name change. Tory party says yes, tower name change goes ahead. The tory party does not hear voters calls. The bell is called Big Ben, the tower is called what ever. She is in her 80s so it could be said, "it's for whom the bell tolls" And with luck the last one.
