Garlic ‘Prevents Food Poisoning Bacteria Better Than Antibiotics'

Garlic Food Poisoning

Have you got food poisoning? Forget asking your GP for antibiotics, as scientists reckon garlic is not only great at fighting vampires – it also beats food poisoning.

Researchers from the Washington State University discovered that garlic is 100 times more effective than two commonly used antibiotics when it comes to treating poisoning caused by the most common source of bacterium: campylobacter.

The study discovered the garlic compound 'diallyl sulfide' was able to penetrate through the bacterium’s slimy biofilm layer and kill the cell by shutting down its growth and metabolism.

However, antibiotics erythromycin and ciprofloxacin did not have the same ability.

"This work is very exciting to me because it shows that this compound has the potential to reduce disease-causing bacteria in the environment and in our food supply," said lead author Dr Xiaonan Lu, in a statement.

Adding to this, Michael Konkel, a co-author who has been studying this particular type of food poisoning for 25 years, said: "This is the first step in developing or thinking about new intervention strategies.”

The study results were published in the Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy.

  • Wash Your Hands

Wash your hands frequently and thoroughly with soap and water, particularly after using the toilet and before preparing food.

  • Don't Share Flannels Or Towels

Avoid sharing flannels and towels with anyone who has had or has the superbug, or anyone who may be exposed to it in any way.

  • Disinfect Surfaces

Disinfect any surfaces or objects that could be contaminated with the virus. Wash the items separately and on a hot wash to ensure that the virus is killed.

  • Keep Your Toilet Clean

Keep the toilet and surrounding area clean and disinfected to avoid any cross-contamination.

  • Avoid Raw, Unwashed Food

Avoid eating raw, unwashed produce and only eat oyster from a reliable source. <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/mobileweb/1969/12/31/three-quarters-british-oysters-norovirus-winter-vomiting-bug_n_1118617.html" target="_hplink">Note that oysters are known to carry the virus.</a>

Campylobacter is a bacterium, as the name suggests, not a source of one. Being totally synthetic, cyprofloxacin is not, strictly speaking, an antibiotic but an antibacterial.

There is little doubt that diallyl sulphide, like other good antioxidants (think cyanide!) can shut down metabolism at sufficient dose - but is this only in campylobacter or potentially also in your cells? (Why have none of the antioxidant quacks ever mentioned sulphides disulphides and thiols?). There is no mention of dosage above, which is always important.

Better make sure I wash my hands BEFORE I go to the loo then !

Misleading title, as the study didn't find that garlic itself but an extract of the compound was effective.
12:41 PM on 05/08/2012
But the extract itself IS IN the garlic,(to be extracted) so eating garlic is good for you, and has been in use in China and many countries in eastern Europe for thousands of years,
in countries like Hungary, they crush the garlic cloves and put them in their childrens` shoes, where they are absorbed by the body.

With Reservatol, in red wine, this is also in red grapes, it`s the reservatol that helps with heart health and strokes, but the stuff is already in the bottle, or the grape, yes they can extract it but l would prefer the natural thing.

If you look at the actual study it says nothing about reducing Camp. bacteria in humans by eating garlic. It says that in a laboratory they have applied one of the chemicals found in garlic to the Camp. bacteria and that it had an effect. They say that it could be used to prevent the bacteria developing in foods.

Guess those of us who despise garlic with an intense passion are out of luck. Maybe they can engineer a garlic strain that tastes nothing like the stuff. I know a lot of people who love it, but it just overpowers everything it touches. The smells makes me loose my appetite - great diet though. Smell garlic...eat an apple instead.

you can get garlic capsules, they dont tasre of garlic and no smell of garlic, just swallow em and job done
09:27 AM on 05/08/2012
I believe, so I am told, that the capsules are not as effective as eating the raw garlic. perhaps you would like to chew that over.
10:06 AM on 05/08/2012
They are OK as long as you don't wash them down with a hot drink - it melts the capsule and you taste garlic for hours!

So, researchers are now discovering the power of garlic. What took them so long? They will want to see what is in the garlic, to make a drug out of it, and reap big profits. Just eat your garlic and let it do it's wonderful work. The only friends you will have will be fellow garlic eaters, but who cares.

This is a funny article because it reminds me of what my mother used to do for us as kids. If someone had a stomachache, and felt sickness coming on, she would go out and get us Italian Hoagies from a local deli that was famous for them, and for the garlic and herb sauce they poured liberally on the sandwiches. She always ordered extra hot peppers, too. They were a special treat, and we always ate them right up.

If you were sick with a virus, you tended to just throw the sandwich right up, and then you got sent to bed with ginger ale and clear liquids and crackers and sympathy. But if it was just something bad that you ate, the garlic and hot peppers blasted through your system and immediately killed anything that was not supposed to be there. We often felt all better within a couple of hours, plus we got a great sandwich!

I'm glad other people will now have the opportunity to discover the healing power of garlic!
