Roy Hodgson's Voice: The Sun Blasted For 'Bullying' New England Manager

The Huffington Post UK  |  By Posted: 2/05/2012 10:40 Updated: 2/05/2012 11:29

The Sun newspaper has been accused of bullying by football supporters and media after their front page splash on new England manager Roy Hodgson.

Days after Rupert Murdoch stated his papers would produce serious journalism, the redtop tabloid's headline this morning read "BWING ON THE EUWOS (WE'LL SEE YOU IN UKWAINE AGAINST FWANCE)", in reference to Hodgson's speech impediment.

Whereas the majority of other media outlets have shown Hodgson, 64, the dignity which he displayed at his Tuesday press conference, the Murdoch paper has instead continued its vendetta against the former Liverpool boss.

The Sun were notoriously synonymous with their partisan calls for Harry Redknapp to be appointed England manager.

Redknapp, a former columnist with the paper, was heir apparent to the role Fabio Capello vacated on the same day the Tottenham boss was acquitted of tax fraud charges.

However the 65-year-old was overlooked by the Football Association in favour of the more experienced Hodgson and not even interviewed for the vacant managerial post.

On Twitter, The Sun was trending on Tuesday morning as journalists and even footballers lambasted them for their disrespect shown towards Hodgson.

Phil Neville, who did a U-turn and voiced his support for Hodgson having tweeted earlier in the season Redknapp should be the first name on the Euro 2012 teamsheet, tweeted his dismay:

Brother Gary also joined in:

Disgustung headlines, good journo's under pressure writing pieces for their mates and a certain paper needs putting out of circulation.

Members of the media also voiced their unhappiness at The Sun:

ian prior
Must say, the front page of the Sun this morning is a hateful piece of work

Jake Humphrey
I think today's headline in The Sun is offensive.

james brown
the sun, Murdoch, the government, NoTW - riddled with bad ideas, corruption and bullying.

Nev Pierce
Ah, what a small, poisonous paper The Sun is.

TheFarm/PeterHooton
Whatever u think of Roy Hodgson & the FA's decision to appoint him The Sun's front page today is an absolute disgrace

Whilst others mocked the contrast:

Ju Power
Roy Hodgson can speak five languages. The Sun can barely write in one.

This is the journalism of which Rupert is so proud, he set the culture and this is the product. They'll say "It's only a bit of fun", shows the rest of us how infantile and twisted the Murdoch drone has to be to get a job at Fortress Wapping.

It's Disgusting and disrespectful that an intelligent multilingual man who has a very slight speech impediment can be mocked like this just because the News Corporation's annointed one didn't get the job.

The fact that this was used as a front page leader of a national newspaper, shows just how low the level of leadership at the SUN has sunk.
Even if the reporter producing the article had believed it was humerous, (I do not) his editor should have considered just how offensive the article may be to those among us who have a speech impediment.
It is long overdue, that the SUN is taken to task about the way it is run, and it should start today where they explain just who thought it was funny to run with such an offensive front page.
I do not buy papers very often, and under no circumstances would I buy the SUN, and even less inclined after that headline.
It will not belong before Murdoch and his news group get a major shock, when the general public take their custom elsewhere.

The Sun and Murdock are sulking again, the man they backed as not selected for the position they backed him for, so do down the man that was selected ahead of thier canidate.
The focus on a speech impediment shows the level of this trash publication.
The choice of Hodgson by the FA is the right one, only if to keep a Murdock man out of another key position, before anyone says its not important or key, with the money generated by football for the economy, including increased newspaper sales, the England job is key especially in major finals years.
The Murdock empire would not back thier mother unless there was somthing in it for them, so hats off to the FA and hope politics can follow thier example and not bow down to nothing more, judging from this mornings headline, a school yard bully.

Yes, well done again the Sun, not a ball has been kicked yet and you're already picking on the guy's speech defect! You'd think they'd play a bit safer with Murdoch under the spotlight, but no!

Trash!

A blaring, crass display of disrespect, pure bullying. Bring back the boycott, plus, does anyone have any more, er, active ideas? The Sun should be taught a lesson.

Roy was a very good choice, the FA finally got it right, Harry Rednap is a joke, look what he did to southampton and then went to religate portsmouth then back to southampton, the mans got know loyalty, he cant read or write the rest of the world would make fun of him and it would effect the players, he's had court cases regarding money even though found not guilty it still leaves a bad taste for the English game, Harry panicks to much and sweats to much to be able to have a cool head and take England forward. With Harry it's if your face fits, with Roy it's if your good enough, Hary has to many mates to do the right thing.

Criticising someone for literacy when your own post contains such delights as…

"religate" (relegate) * "got know loyalty" (has no loyalty) * "effect the players" (affect the players) * "panicks to much" (a two-fer, "panics too much", although even that is poor grammar).

Be careful of throwing that black kettle around in that greenhouse in which you reside.

He's the new England manager - God help him/us - and he surely knows that this sort of Sun inspired 'crap' goes with the job...

He probably is more intelligent than most Sun staff, so I don’t think it will bother him that much.
11:39 AM on 05/02/2012
Anther example of 'megaphone' bullying. I wonder if the Sun's Headline would have made a slur at an England manager in a wheel-chair; or if they talked with an Asian or any other foreign accent? The Sun staff are not unintelligent and know exactly what they are doing. Perhaps it's time to follow the people of Liverpool who have ignored the Sun since their offensive post Hillsborough Disaster comments/headlines. Don't buy the paper.

It's football. Who cares!
11:12 AM on 05/02/2012
Lots of people, but you it seems. There's no reason why you should care. But equally there's no reason to criticise those that do.
The point of the article is not about football however. It's about the continuous poor behavious of The Sun newspaper.

I probably look at this way:

Ball kicking and game playing = Don't care
Needless Bullying of individuals by the Murdoch Press = Do care
