Falklands Olympic Advert: Sir Martin Sorrell Condemns His Own Firm For 'Totally Unacceptable' Ad

PA/Huffington Post UK  |  Posted: 05/05/2012 09:28 Updated: 05/05/2012 10:40

British businessman Sir Martin Sorrell condemned his own firm for a "totally unacceptable" Argentinian advert showing an Olympic hopeful training on a British war memorial in the Falkland Islands.

The head of communications giant WPP professed himself "appalled and embarrassed" at the 90-second advert, which says the athlete is preparing for London 2012 on "Argentine soil".

The brainchild of WPP-owned agency Young & Rubicam (Y&R), it shows Argentina hockey captain Fernando Zylberberg running in the Falklands capital, Port Stanley, and exercising on the island's Great War Memorial, which honours British sailors who died in the First World War.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) said it had contacted the Argentinian National Olympic Committee about the advert and received assurances that the Games would not be used as a political platform.

"The Olympic Games should not be a forum to raise political issues and the IOC regrets any attempts to use the spotlight of the games for that end," the IOC said in a statement.

Zylberberg waded into the row last night, telling Al Jazeera English that the advert was supposed to convey his country's feeling over the islands.

Sir Martin Sorrell has condemned the advert

"The message is that to every Argentine the Islands belong to Argentina. To me to be training in any other province or to do it over the islands is the same," he told the broadcaster.

Y&R said it had asked the Argentinian government to pull the spot, accusing its creators of behaving "in a manner that is unacceptable to our company".

Y&R's global chief executive David Sable said it was impossible for the agency to see everything produced by its branches around the world but stressed that clear guidelines were in place.

"Our guidelines say you're not allowed to do anything political or politicised," he said. "We don't do political campaigns and we never have.

"It's just not acceptable and we condemn it completely, but it's easy to understand the circumstances in which a local branch thinks 'this is cool' and doesn't think what the implications are."

The advert, reportedly bought by the government and broadcast after being rejected by various companies, calls the islands by their Argentinian name, the Malvinas, and carries the tagline: "To compete on British soil, we train on Argentinian soil."

It ends with the words: "Homage to the fallen and the veterans of the Malvinas. Presidency of the Nation."

Foreign Secretary William Hague dismissed it as a "stunt" and accused Argentina of trying to misuse the Games for political purposes.

"Argentina has had some diplomatic setbacks in the last few weeks," he told Sky News.

"They have failed at a summit of the Americas to get other countries - South and North America - to issue a declaration on the Falkland Islands.

"I think what is happening is they are looking for one or two stunts to try and make up for that or save a bit of pride somehow. But I don't think trying to misuse the Olympics in some way for political purposes will go down very well with other countries.

"Of course, it doesn't change our position on the Falkland Islands. We will always support the right to self-determination of the people of the Falkland Islands."

The advert follows months of political bickering between London and Buenos Aires on the issue of the disputed South Atlantic islands.

The Argentinian president has been attempting to reassert Argentina's claim to the British overseas territory, but the British government says it will not discuss the issue without the agreement of the Falkland Islanders.

Disgusting and rude advert. Demostrates the Argies just do not care about what UK thinks or what the islanders want. End of story. Some form of censure is needed. If I come across any argentine products, I'll look for others rather than buy their stuff. They ought to stay at home and withdraw from the olympics.

It seems that if another country does something so obviously political and provocative we have to be sensible and be restrained. Why ? I am certain that if the British had done something similar about any other country there wiould be absolute outrage, not just from the international community, but also from within our own shores. Where are all the bleeding heart Liberals now ? Why no outrage at what is a disgraceful, disrespectful and aggressive act. There must be NO quarter given on this and Argentina ignored...as she deserves to be.

It's fine.

People are far too easily offended by vague, abstract concepts. It's almost as if they have nothing else to be concerned about.

My question is, how did they get permission to film on the island and how did they get the Argentine athlete onto the island in the first place ? This could have been prevented from the start. An Argentine subsidiary of a London based company filming with a Argentine athlete preparing for the Olympics in London, surly a few alarm bells should have gone off, especially so close to the 30th anniversary of the Falklands war. I think we need answers !

They didn't have any permission to film.

Apparently he was one of a number of Argentinian athletes who entered the Falklands for the purpose of taking part in the Stanley Marathon.

The directors, however, flew in from the US.

To minimize suspicion, the filming was done starting at 6am in the morning.

Not sure I buy the premise that Kirchener or Fernandez have ever *seriously* imagined that they might get international support for Argentine claims on the islands. Or that they care at all about international opinion.

*Everything* they've done appears to be intended solely for domestic Argentine consumption. Everything appears to be intended to persuade the Argentine public that will they may be utterly incompetent with all other aspects of governance and finance, they're committed to claiming sovereignty over the islands.

Which is exactly what the generals were up to 30 years ago.

When they send Marines and not some Hockey player and a camera crew , that's when we need to be concerned .

It appears that the Argentine government has approved this rather timid piece of propaganda as a device that , in their eyes , is worthy as a provocation to the UK concerning who should claim sovereignty in the Falkland Islands. That it is provocation is beyond doubt , the calculated insult of the narrative that claims the sportsman is training on Argentine soil , yet is shown training on a WW 1 War Memorial that is obviously not an Argentinian but a British memorial , is one which we can only assume is approved by the highest office in the Argentine government, as the reporter in the video claims that it was released by the regime as a confirmation of what the regime in Argentina considers is an unresolved territorial dispute. One suspects that if no mineral or oil wealth was at issue , there would be no dispute , the Islands lie outside Argentina's territorial waters , but the alluring prospect of oil is obviously the issue that is driving their desire to continue their more than dubious claim to ownership of the islands .
11:51 PM on 05/05/2012
I disagree, I do not think this is a provocation.

I think this was produced for domestic consumption by Argentines.

It matters only that Fernandez and the rest of the Argentine government *appear* to be bold and determined. But nothing more than appearance.

you are obviously free to disagree , however , the Argentine president bought the video and was responsible for its release : http://www.periscopepost.com/2012/05/argentina-inflames-falklands-tensions-with-malvinas-olympic-training-spot/

The Argentine team who work for the ad agency Young and Rubicam ,who made the advert , made it for the Argentine government , as this quote of a press comment by them reveals : http://www.periscopepost.com/2012/05/argentina-inflames-falklands-tensions-with-malvinas-olympic-training-spot/

No, they've been making a nuisance of themselves since the 1940s.

That's true , although I am of the opinion that it would be possible for them to have given up the claim to the Falklands by now , if it were not for the apparent wealth of resources waiting to be exploited , though that's a point I could not insist upon , but see merely as a possibility.

Argentina are just trying to wind us up and we are making a big issue about it. I take it that there is not much else happening in the world at the moment if such a story is being given such prominence. As for how Fernando Zylberberg managed to gain access to the Islands I would like to point out that British citizens can travel to Argentina without the need to apply for a visa and likewise their citizens can come over here on just an ordinary passport and no doubt this applies to the Falkland Islands as well. Fernando Zylberberg had a participated in a marathon run on the Islands. The fact that we still enjoy visa-free travel to either of our countries show that Anglo-Argentine relations could be a far lot worse.

Sounds Argentinian to me or dont youconsider native Americans to have any right to be in Argentina? Your on dodgy territory with your insistance that sportsmen must be indiginous representitives of their country and have indiginous names as indiginous Brits are too fat and unfit to get in yours. Thats why most the British Olympic athletes will be of Afro Carribean descent not pie scoffing indigenous Brits. Even semi active British Sports like Cricket sees England Cricket Captain called Nasser Hussain , I hadn't realised all you indigenous Brits all had Muslim names now?

Britain came fourth in the medal table last time, I followed the Olympics closely enough to know that virtually all our medal winners were white Anglo-Saxons/celts, not that it matters of course, I'd be just as happy if they were members of the ethnic minorities and you know very well that nobody with a name like Zylberberg or Kirchner should be complaining about colonialism in South America.

btw, we came second in the paralympic games, with athletes of all ethnicities. second only to China population over a billion (where there was some question about the "disability" of their athletes)  This is a real tribute to the civility of Britain, imagine a third rate country like Argentina treating it's disabled so seriously. No wonder the Falklander's wish to remain British and not be subjugated by a people whose only contribution to the world has been some dance called "The Tango"
