'Racist' Newcastle School Sent Mother Letter In Hindi 'Because She Had An Asian Name'

Hindi Letter
The Hindi letter has prompted Ahmed to call the school 'racist'

A school has been accused of racism after it sent a mother a letter in Hindi - even though she could not speak the language.

Raheela Ahmed, whose daughter attends the Newcastle upon Tyne primary school, said the reason she was sent the letter in the foreign language was because she had an asian surname.

"I'm really offended and it's insulting to send me a letter in another language," she told local paper the Chronicle Live. "They've just assumed because of my surname that I speak [Hindi].

"You're trying to be racist to me - this is how I felt when I got the letter," Ahmed, who is of Pakistani descent, added. "We get all our letters sent out in English, we don't even speak much Punjabi with the children."

Archibald First School in Gosforth has since apologised for causing any offence and called the mistake a "translation error".

No mention of the reason this woman was sent the letter in the first place. From other articles I have read the school was only carrying out a duty of care for a primary school pupil dropped off too early and left unattended in a school yard.
Let's have a reality check here, I for one find it despicable that this woman has slandered a school for trying to look after her child.

As an aside, when my father was a child, Wesh was discouraged in favour of English and was, I believed, banned from use in Welsh schools. This had the effect of reducing the number of Welsh speakers. This has now been overturned with children now being taught in Welsh.

In this case, the mother should have been sent the letter in English unless she had requested otherwise. If you live in England the language is English and the onus on anyone settling in this country is to learn and converse in English. If you are visiting it is different but to live permanently in any country you should learn their language.

A further thought on what I said above. The letter was sent in Hindi because the family name was Asian. To the best of my knowledge, there are more than one Asian languages. This seems to be a case of the school secretary thinking she knows more than she actually does!

I suspect there may be more here than meets the eye. This woman states she speaks Punjabi, not Hindi and is offended when she received a Hindi letter. I understand there is a movement in India to suppress Punjabi being used in schools IN PUNJAB and instead force children to learn only Hindi in school. Possibly her apparent over-reaction to being sent a letter in a language she does not speak is at least partly because it is in the language that is being forced in Punjab schools with the message that Hindi is better and Punjabi is bad.

Instead of immediately leaping to "racist" on the part of the school, someone needs to step back and take a wider shot at seeing this in a context that is not apparent to people in Great Brittain. I know this counters the view of many commentws that state, "When in Rome do as the Romans do" shifted to "When in England, one MUST do and think as the British do" but if true understanding rather than knee-jerk racial pride-based reactions is important, then we must try to see that even though someone is living in Great Britain they do not, nor should they, leave behind all influences of other cultures and that maybe she had not reacted so strongly because she is after money or other baser motives.

Interesting analysis. Incorrect by the way: as the letter was sent in TAMIL, not Hindi. HP and various other media sources need to sort out their facts.

How do you know this? I would not be surprised though as I have seen other HP articles with less-than accurate info. Though the Internet connects the world bringing into our homes an amazing variety and amount of information it also brings the potential for viral lies and deceit with little to no consequences because of the anonymity.

Yup, I get pretty tired always having to read between the lines. Not that journalism was ever as "true-blue and incorruptible" as journalists want us to believe but it seems to me that honesty, integrtrity, and accuracy in reporting is getting harder and harder to find. Thanks for the information. How do you know this?

I wonder if there's a 'Racism claims 4U' firm operating ? Gap in the market there maybe, seeing as they would have the Strasburg numpties backing them up.

I think you may be right!

Why are there so many people bitter about ethnic minorities here. We're all from the human race you know.
03:22 PM on 05/07/2012
There are so many bitter English people because England is being taken over by by foreign people who what to screw our country for everything they can get...this woman is just after compensation for what was a genuine mistake. I think she should just be pleased that her 3 children are getting a free education and stop being so silly!
03:38 PM on 05/07/2012
I think it was a bit offensive though. Imagine if you were an ethnic minority born and bred here and made to feel different. Though I do think she over-reacted.

Also I don't know why people don't understand yet that immigration does a lot more good compared to bad in a colossal way. If there were no ethnic minorities coming in, then the economy would be in an incredibly bad state and it would leave behind an ageing population which would lead to the worst consequences.

Simple answer is to send all letters out in English and let them get it translated, after all this is England where the language is English -

- even if many Brits have trouble reading and writing it ;)
10:37 AM on 05/07/2012
Totally agree, they should be able to read English anyway, because they are living in O! yes BRITAIN. would we get it in our language if we were living and getting educated in any other country , don't think so.
02:51 PM on 05/07/2012
Well said, you are absolutley right - as per my reply to wastel4b above.
11:18 AM on 05/07/2012
Spot on! In America you can't get citizenship unless you can prove that you can speak the language. It's about time we did the same. Sending out info in every language under the sun may demonstrate multi-culturism, but it is an excuse for immigrants not to learn the language.

A bit of a storm in a teacup...And I'm very tempted to note that the reverse could also be true,if she had been sent out a letter in English, when she spoke mainly Punjabi. Obviously some school secretary needs to be sent away to do a course on sensitivity training. Seems some effort needs to be made there to find out which language parents might prefer to receive letters in.

No effort needed you send letters in English. if the recipient cant read it they can pay and get it translated. If they feel hard done by they can pay for some coundselling ,holistic therapies a week at a spa the point is they pay not me.

11:20 AM on 05/07/2012
Well, this rather obviously isn't English either.
It means absolutely nothing intellectually (a joke really) nor grammatically. It's utter vacuous drivel.
If this is the standard of mother tongue English our schools are passing off, then I weep.

This is precisely why state schools should be closed. Want an education? Pay for it yourself, as far as I'm concerned. Don't expect me to house you, to feed you and to teach you!
