Fresh evidence that police could have intercepted the Omagh bombers before they committed the atrocity has been uncovered in a new independent inquiry, victims' relatives have claimed.

Bereaved families who commissioned the report said it has identified "hard proof" that officers on both sides of the Irish border were involved in a live operation on the day of the attack.

Twenty-nine people, including a woman pregnant with twins, were killed when the Real IRA bomb ripped through the Co Tyrone market town on August 15 1998.

The family campaigners have previously demanded a cross-border inquiry into whether the authorities in Northern Ireland and in the Republic of Ireland could have done more to prevent the bombing.

Relatives who commissioned the report met Northern Ireland Secretary Owen Paterson in Belfast today ahead of presenting the final version to the UK Government next month.

Michael Gallagher, whose 21-year-old son Aiden was murdered in the attack, said the meeting was "hot and heavy".

"We told him we have evidence that there was a live police operation going on on August 15 that could have intercepted the bombers," he said.

"This is new evidence that hasn't been made public before."

He added: "We also have evidence that public officials lied to the general public about the Omagh bombing.

"We will be producing all of that evidence to him on June 18."

Gallagher said he would not be outlining full details of the evidence unearthed until the report had been passed to the Government.

The Omagh Support and Self Help Group commissioned the report from a group of London-based consultants who have interviewed key figures associated with the case.

The consultants have also examined material already compiled on the bombing.

The documentation includes police reports from both sides of the Irish border, a probe carried out by the Police Ombudsman in Northern Ireland, plus a government-sponsored review of how intelligence on the attack was handled.

The relatives also secured disclosure of other documents linked to the case.

The hand of caution should be cut off and we should always act on justified suspicion especially when it comes to terrorists, better to offend many and save a few.

Your right but what if Police had actually instigated the attack? I know it would seem ridiculous that this would be the case but its not unheard of is it. We have a double agent now who has just been intercepted trying to blow up an american jet who as it turns out works for the CIA? We have double agents working within Afghanistan and its commonly known that the CIA were aware of the Twin Towers plan six months before it took place? Keep society in fear and you will always need politicians to protect you from that fear??? The world would be a nicer place without corrupt, greedy rich elite who take the rest of us to War at the drop of a hat, and unfortunately we listen to there stories about terror and bombs etc when they are the biggest threat to Mankind themselves.

You are right. It's ridiculous. In fact it's not only ridiculous it's a scandalous slur on the RUC and Garda. I was serving in NI at the time of the Omagh bomb atrocity. Not in that area but in the province itself. The bravery and loyalty of the RUC in particular is unquestionable. Those men and women lived with the threat of death and destruction 24/7 both on and off duty. Their families were under constant threat, they were endangered by both factions, the IRA and the loyalist paramilitaries and lived a life of hell. We were only there for 4/6 month tours of duty and then came home to the safety and sanctuary of our home lives. They had to live with it ALL the time. You are entitled to air your views but in my opinion your idea is too ridiculous for words.

Why didn`t all this come out years ago? Opening a can of worms this late on can only cause more grief. To all parties concerned.

Yep.let's blame the police. The murdering IRA scum who planted it are not to blame.

Hindsight has 20/20 vision. And nothing will bring back the tragic victims of that bombing. Why open old wounds? It's time to move on.

I live in Birmingham. In 1974 two city centre pubs were bombed killing 21 people and injuring nearly 200. This crime remains unsolved.
It is common knowledge that the IRA were responsible. It is about time that the ex-IRA leadership should finally bring some closure to the families and citizens of Birmingham by naming those responsible.

I suppose that goes two ways then for the innocent Irish civilian's killed by a British Government ~ it's about time they got closure too by naming those responsible!

Not sure which event/individual you are talking about. It seems clear to me that the British government have already admitted responsibility for 'Bloody Sunday'.
Planting a bomb in pub and giving a warning when it is too late to evacuate is murder. I agree with your general point but but would distance myself from sectarian killings carried out by so called loyalist and the IRA paramilitary . As i am sure you are aware, some of these groups were reallyt just criminal gangs looking after their 'territory'. I suspect The names of the Birmingham pub bombers are well known in N. Ireland. I suspect even the British government are well aware of who carried out this atrocity..

Well, let's hope that Huffington Post is able to get and run the rest of the story on or shortly after June 18th, when the relatives of the victims will have presented their evidence.
