Jeremy Hunt: Labour Step Up Calls For Culture Secretary To Be Sacked

Posted: 12/05/2012 11:36 Updated: 12/05/2012 11:49

Labour has stepped up demands for Jeremy Hunt to be sacked, amid fresh claims he colluded with Rupert Murdoch's empire in a bid to prevent a public inquiry into phone hacking.

A newly-disclosed email from News Corporation public affairs executive Fred Michel said the embattled Culture Secretary wanted the firm to "guide his and Number 10's positioning" on the scandal.

It also boasted of a tip-off about an "extremely helpful" statement Hunt was due to make to MPs on the BSkyB bid.

Following the disclosure, in material released to the Leveson inquiry by former News International boss Rebekah Brooks, Labour said David Cameron must act to get rid of Hunt.

"This is absolutely not acceptable," said Labour deputy leader Harriet Harman. "How much more evidence does David Cameron need that this man is not fit to hold this high office?"

But a spokeswoman for Hunt insisted that Michel's only contacts were with his special adviser, Adam Smith, who has already resigned after admitting his relations with News Corporation were too close.

The Culture Secretary acted with integrity throughout and will "vindicate" his position when he gives his evidence to the inquiry, according to the spokeswoman.

The email from Michel to Brooks, dated 27 June 2011, predicted accurately that later that week Hunt would play down the impact of the phone hacking scandal on the BSkyB bid.

"He will be repeating the same narrative as the one he gave in Parliament few weeks ago," Michel wrote.

"This is based on his belief that the police is pursing things thoroughly and phone hacking has nothing to do with the media plurality issues.

"It's extremely helpful."

The email stated that Mr Hunt wanted to "prevent a public inquiry" - instead suggesting that Parliament's Joint Committee on Privacy and Injunctions could carry out a wider investigation.

"For this the committee will need to come up a strong report in the autumn and put enough pressure on the PCC (Press Complaints Committee) to strength itself and take recommendations forward," Michel wrote.

"JH is now starting to looking to phone hacking/practices more thoroughly and has asked me to advise him privately in the coming weeks and guide his and No 10's positioning."

A month later reports emerged that Milly Dowler's mobile phone had been accessed, sparking a public outcry and leading David Cameron to launch the Leveson Inquiry.

Harman said: "Clearly there was complete collusion between the Secretary of State and his office and News Corp on a bid where he was supposed to be impartial, which is why he should not be in his job.

"Either he didn't know what was going on on an £8 billion bid, in which case he shouldn't be in his job and he should be sacked, or he did know and he is covering up and blaming everybody else, in which case he should be sacked."

But a spokeswoman for Hunt insisted: "Jeremy Hunt will respond to this when he gives evidence to the Leveson Inquiry in due course. He is confident his evidence will vindicate the position that he has behaved with integrity on every issue.

"It has already been made clear that when Fred Michel has claimed in emails to be speaking to Jeremy Hunt that was not the case.

"On July 11 2011 Jeremy Hunt wrote to Ofcom for further advice about the impact of phone hacking on the BSkyB bid."

Jeremy Hunt's days are certainly numbered. As a Minister the buck stops with him, so he can't blame his aids etc. I think next week we'll see him resign, shame Cameron dosen't do the same.

Hunt is hanging on to his job as if his life depended on it?????

I don't give a stuff about this subject - its for the hey-ho-Henries and Henriettas.

I do object to the fact that no comments are allowed for the sports section, especially when Lewis Hamilton goes Misère Ouverte whenever he can. What sort of prat is he?

Yes, they are all in it together with the British taxpayer footing the bill for their incompetence and their smarming over newspaper proprietors. Bring back the Raving Monster Loony Party or the Monster Raving Loony Party I say. They are saner than this sycophantic, old boy, old friends, old cronies network. Anything rather than the Tories, Labour of the Lib Dems. I would even vote for a man dressed up as penguin rather than that lot.

On receipt of the Email from Michel why didn’t Brooks respond with “How on earth do you know that, Hunt is supposed to be acting totally independently in a quasi judicial role, not seeking our views on positioning” Brooks didn’t, she simply text “When will the statement will be made?”.
Listening to Messrs Coulson, Murdoch and Brookes at Leveson I get the distinct impression that there is a cover up being played out. Convenient selective memory lapses on the one hand coupled with vivid memories on the other indicate that not all is being been revealed. All of them seem to be working on the same premise as Huhne on speeding “they can’t prove anything”.

Hunt, as the Minister, is accountable for the actions of his officials who act in his name. At very least, he has failed miserably to manage them and has compromised his own position. There is no question that he should go - his credibility and integrity are in shreds and, once again, Cameron's backing a loser.
09:08 PM on 05/12/2012
Yes everybody particularly Cameron seems to have overlooked this. Where there is evidence of impropriety by a Ministers aide the Minister is responsible. Hunt is well aware of this and if he chooses not to resign Cameron has no choice but to order an inquiry.

I am simply astounded that ANY politician from ANY of the three main parties can try to hold the moral high ground on ANY matter to do with courting the media, begging favours from trusted Journalists or sucking up to News Corporation.Folks it's a farce. Labour CRAVED the backing of the SUN and Murdoch and News Corporation, they would have sold their souls for that support and probably tried to, we just don't Know. In the days when the SUN was anti Tory a succession of Tories, including Maggie Thatcher, John Major et al all tried the same thing. Blair was brilliant at it. Sadly for Brown the Blair bubble burst and he inherited an anti Labour Sun. He aws incandescent about it despite his wife cosying up to Miss Brookes. The Lib/Dems are quiet(ish) on the subject because no national newspaper considers then worthy of supporting, or not; they are just there, inconsequential and slightly dotty. That doesn't mean they haven't tried to court the press in exactly the same way, they were just unsuccessful in doing so. This is all madness, time consuming and very costly to the taxpayer. Murdoch and his media empire were courted by a succession of PMs and their parties. Murdoch's empire were guilty of phone hacking. Some people of questionable history managed to get involved in politics afterwards. There, see, done. Move on and sort the country out.
07:39 PM on 05/12/2012
The truth of the matter is this the Murdoch and friends are (very much like you) natural friends of the Tories. Yes to their to their shame under Blair the Labour party did naively get far too close to the Murdoch empire, the FACT is that Murdoch is a natural Tory supporter but is also a shrewd businessman and only got into bed with Labour when he knew that they were going to win power with or without his support and wanted to keep them 'onside'. From '97 through '05 when it was clear that the Labour party were very much in the ascendancy he sided with them but most importantly In the close run elections of '92 and '10 when he really could make a difference his papers came down very much in favour of his Tory friends.
What really annoys me about people like you (apart from the fact that you have a vote) is that just because Mr Hunt is 'one of yours' you feel that it wrong for people to criticise the his actions on the grounds that 'the other lot are just as bad'.

Your bias and lack of understanding is staggering but reflective of a mind closed to anything other than socialism. As it happens, I no longer support the Tory Party, I believe Hunt is a complicit fool and the whole episode stinks to high heaven. None of that affords you the right to make such assumptions about me, assumptions based on narrow thinking, blind allegiance and the inability to debate openly. Your sentence apropos "What really annoys me...(apart from the fact you have a vote..." illustrates your marxist leanings ergo I recognise the futility of trying to debate civilly with you. Unlike you I see the good and bad in both main parties but I also recognise the champagne socialism of Blair and Mandelson and now Milliband and Balls, which you seem an adherent of, is rotten to the core and a sellout of true Labour party supporters. I will not be accessing any further presumptive posts from you.

When Cameron was originally defending Hunt at PMQ's, Hunt was looking at him with hero worship. You could tell by their faces and body actions that there was an uneasy guilt pervaying the atmosphere. They will hang on like grim death !!!. Oh please politicians ,please refrain from saying those glib statements like 'hard working families doing the right thing' , 'up & down the country', etc.,- it's obvious that they have a back room scriptwriter and they couldn't say an original 'honest'statement at all. Please public grow long memories and dump the 3 so called main parties at next General Election. Who shall you vote for ??? There is only one choice, ok they may be inexperienced, but the 'big' 3 parties are total amateurs also ,only worse and total liars. UKIP may be the saviors for England if you think about it hard !!!.
06:07 PM on 05/12/2012
UKIP didn't do too well in the London Mayoral election.
06:25 PM on 05/12/2012
UKIP admitted that 'Fresh choice for London' on Ballot paper was incorrect however their logo was to the left hand margin, as others are. As again, the public voted in numbers without remembering history. Votes for UKIP were up ,but unless the public wake up fast the country is finished. There are many who say it is already.
The Europe situation will soon be upon us with financial mayhem.Wait for it.
10:29 PM on 05/12/2012
Vote UKIP to help labour

sure i searched him on the way out.making sure i was wearing rubber gloves first

What has this got to do with the Labour party.??
They are as big a bunch of corrupt crooks as ever walked the earth.
05:31 PM on 05/12/2012
The crooks that are running the country is my concern , does that not count in your book or are you saying they can be ?
05:45 PM on 05/12/2012
They are all "at it".
What do you know about corruption/crime?
