London Olympics 2012: Royal Navy Responsible For Carrying Torch

PA/Huffington Post UK  |  Posted: Updated: 12/05/2012 11:10

The Royal Navy will be responsible for getting the Olympic flame's UK torch relay started.

The navy's search and rescue squadron was picked by the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) for the job.

On Friday 18 May the flame will arrive at Royal Naval air station Culdrose on board a British Airways, gold-liveried aircraft from Athens.

After an overnight stay at the air station, the flame will be flown to Land's End by 771 Naval Air Squadron in a Sea King helicopter that has been used for many life-saving missions across the South West.

On landing, one of the four aircrew will jump out of the aircraft and take the flame to the start of the London 2012 torch relay, so that its journey across the UK can begin.

The Olympic flame will then travel 8,000 miles across the UK to within 10 miles of 95% of the population - 8,000 torchbearers will carry it for approximately 300 metres each, until it reaches the Olympic Stadium on the eve of 27 July.

Whingers eh!!!
1. The scrap tower was, in the main, paid for by ??? the chap who is rather well off from his steel industry. (Forgotten his name !!)
2. The Royal Navy and in particular the Fleet Air Arm, do NOT ''balls things up'' Highly professional with team work like you have never seen in your life. They are, without any question, the best aviators in this country.
3. I'm not a huge olympic fan but comments on these 2 subjects are way off target.

WRONG!! The best aviators are RAF fighter pilots.

One of my family is watching some gold editions of ''Only fools and horses'' on TV. Now - I am completely stuck as to which is funnier ??? The programme or the thought of RAF fighter pilots being better than Fleet Air Arm.
RAF are good for a low risk bombing run on a Wednesday afternoon - providing they are back for 'Childrens BBC'
So how will you know if the chap/s at a cocktail party are RAF pilots - answer is ''they'll tell you !!!!!!'' lol lol

freebooter1. The adverse comments to which you claim are posted by whingers are representative of many. Their has and continues to be massive waste of public funds. Just take a look at the comments posted against the Olympic Orbit Tower. The cost of that is inexcusable and cannot be justified by anyone with a brain cell. Thank god this gravy train is coming to a very abrupt halt soon and all those on it being made redundent.

It's all very well running about with a lighted torch. But what happened to all this talk about global warming?
05:33 PM on 05/12/2012
This is becomming a very costly stupid exercise. Still, I suppose the good old taxpayer will fund the bill - AGAIN
05:53 PM on 05/12/2012
by the time the games is paid for, we could have paid off our "deficit.
05:25 PM on 05/12/2012
drop the torch in the sea, cancel the games, and give all the lottery money back to he ordinary people of britain, not the chosen few who will make a fortune out of his debacle.

Erm...it's a 'once every 4 years event' that makes the 'Olympic committee' multi-millionaires at the expense of the host country. It's another junket for those with their noses in the trough. It was suggested that a greek island be developed as the Olympics site and held there every 4 years with the facilities being used the rest of the time for training. In the last 12 years alone this measure would have saved over £140 BILLION. The Olympic Committee totally rejected it. They are the sad greedy men.

Call me Dave is not whinging he is expressing a view supported by many. If proof were needed I suggest you read the majority of adverse comments under the Olympic Orbit Tower. What a pile of rusty scrap that is and a further waste of money. Our Money
