Dead British Soldiers

The two British servicemen shot dead by members of the Afghan Police Force have been named as Corporal Brent McCarthy and Lance Corporal Lee Davies.

The Royal Air Force airman and the soldier from 1st Battalion Welsh Guards were killed yesterday at a patrol base in the Lashkar Gah district of Helmand province, the Ministry of Defence said.

The servicemen were providing security for a meeting with local officials when two people wearing Afghan Police uniforms opened fire.

Speaking on Monday afternoon defence secretary Philip Hammond paid tribute to the dead soldiers.

""I send out my heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of Corporal Brent McCarthy and Lance Corporal Lee Davies whose lives were cut tragically short by a cowardly act of aggression.

"Both servicemen were performing an invaluable role, training and mentoring Afghan police, helping to ensure that Afghanistan will never again be a place from which international terrorists can launch attacks on our society. Their sacrifice will not be in vain and we will never forget them."

An International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) spokesman said the attack was conducted by two people wearing Afghan Police uniforms.

One is on the run and the other was killed when forces returned fire, the spokesman said.

Major Ian Lawrence, spokesman for Task Force Helmand, said: "Sadly, it is my duty to confirm that a soldier serving with 1st Battalion Welsh Guards and an airman from The Royal Air Force have been shot and killed in the Lashkar Gah district of Helmand province.

"The thoughts and condolences of everyone serving in the Task Force are with their families and friends."

The incident appears to be the latest in a string of "green on blue" attacks in which members of the Afghan security forces have opened fire on international allies.

In March, Sergeant Luke Taylor, of the Royal Marines, and Lance Corporal Michael Foley, of the Adjutant General's Corps (Staff and Personnel Support) were shot dead by an Afghan soldier at the entrance to the UK headquarters in Helmand province.

Five British soldiers were killed by a rogue Afghan policeman in November 2009. The gunman opened fire on the men in a military compound in Nad e-Ali before fleeing. The Taliban later claimed responsibility.

The victims were Warrant Officer Class 1 Darren Chant, 40, from Walthamstow, London, Sergeant Matthew Telford, 37, from Grimsby, and Guardsman Jimmy Major, 18, also from Grimsby, all members of 1st Battalion The Grenadier Guards. Royal Military Policemen Corporal Steven Boote, 22, from Birkenhead, and Corporal Nicholas Webster-Smith, 24, from Brackley, Northamptonshire, were also killed.

Such attacks have become increasingly common in recent months, particularly since the burning of copies of the Koran at a US base in February.

A total of 414 members of UK forces have died since operations in Afghanistan began in October 2001.

It also concludes we cannot defeat the Taliban, so we have lost and should get out ASAP. How is it for 12 years many writers to your letter pages including me, have predicted this would happen, but the Government, NATO and the Intelligence agencies with all the resources at their disposal could not?

We give billions of pounds in aid to Afghanistan & Pakistan each year this must stop immediately and use the money instead to repair our wounded service men and their families shattered lives. I would also say, if we can remove a Knighthood when a banker gets in wrong, surely we can do the same for the likes of Lord John Reid, who got the war in Afghanistan so criminally wrong?

As I write the British dead alone in Afghanistan stands at 414, with thousands more maimed for life. New Labour under Tony Blair said it was to defeat terrorism and rebuild the country. His Minister for Defence Dr, John Reid said in 2006 “We are in the south, Helmund to protect the Afghanistan people and reconstruct the economy and encourage democracy. We would be happy to leave in 3 years’ time without firing one shot”

In 2007 the Ex UK Ambassador to Kabul warned that with the Pakistan Army and Secret Services were sheltering, supplying and supporting the Taliban and as soon as NATO left Afghanistan the Taliban would take control of the whole Country backed by Pakistan. He was roundly condemned for saying this and dismissed as an odd ball by the Government and Army Generals alike. Now 5 years latter a secret NATO reports confirms that to be very much the case, but goes further in saying the Afghanistan & Pakistan Government and the NATO trained Afghan army, are also aiding the Taliban in attacking our soldiers. Even giving their weapons we have purchased for them to the Taliban,

Mate most people would concur with what you say, since 2006 Pakistan has physicaly assisted the Talibs, initialy in crossing the border and operating indirect weapon systems, against British Troops, whilst at the same time training the said Talibs. Pakistan has not only a few fingers in the pie, they have a frigging fist, and have activly increased both the numbers of training teams on the ground, (and use around 50% foreign fighters who are non admidssable and denaible) but also logistic/finacial and moral support form accross the border. We are doing the proverbial p****ing in the wind in that country and whilst the pull out can not be done soon enough, it does need to be progressive and well thought out...as oppossed to the panicy political pullout of Basra which made the British forces the laughing stock of the world! Good day to you.

Nice to know we'll be leaving them £2BILLION pounds worth of our equipment upon our departure isnt it?

It's sad for these two but these glowing tributes are getting all too familiar- the rest of our soldiers are sitting ducks and ought to be pulled out tomorrow and let them get on with it.

Lets see of the new French president has the courage of his convictions and brings their troops home very quickly, or will he just succumb to the bluster of others?

Its bad enough we are at war with anyone but the war in Afghanistan is serving no purpose and one which the UK forces cannot win hence. The amount of casualties being taken by UK forces has now reached 412 with ten times that in wounded. We need to eradicate the extreme Islamic threat in this country, and our war in Afghanistan just makes that so much harder to do, as it promotes Muslims to become terrorists in the first place!
I would also say Muslims all over the world protest & take to the streets including the UK over a cartoon or the burning of the Quran, but when a real atrocity happens like this, or the grooming of white girls by Muslim men I here silence or celebrations?

That's because they don't like us. The Russians had a direct frontier with Afghanistan and could take in as much military might as they wanted, they were still incapable of pacifying the country. My solution is quite simple, we all pull out, they do whatever they want, if they mess with us then we bomb them, what's wrong with that? Much cheaper anyway and it worked with Ghadaffi.

Terrorism in UK mostly Home Grown.

David Cameron today said he is sorry that another six young soldiers have died in Afghanistan do to a Taliban/police action. Well I think they are crocodile tears?

The Government, this and last keeps saying that the 12 year long war in Afghanistan that has cost so many young soldiers lives is to prevent the Taliban and al Qaeda training Muslim extremist for acts of terror in the UK and to reduce the supply of heroin to the UK. Well a report out two years ago from the Centre for Social Cohesion nailed those statements as mere propaganda and attempted justification for a pointless war and the poppy/ heron production has increased 500% sent since the war started?

The report found that of the 124 convicted terrorists in the UK, 69% were British nationals of the Muslim faith, and urged the Government to recognize the main threat of violent Islamism comes from within the UK itself and not Afghanistan. The report found the highest per cent age of offenders had a Pakistani or Somali heritage and that six of the eight plots in Britain, 75% contained members who had trained in Pakistan. So according to that, we at war with the wrong Country?

Most wars are over resources, in this case it is opium, the most important drug in the world, used by all hospitals everywhere.

When western forces withdraw from Afghanistan, the people will side with the strongest and the Taliban will have won.

Bring the troops home now!
11:32 PM on 05/13/2012
Correct, bring the troops home now, but incorrect, the people dont want to "side" with the Taiban, they dont want us OR the Talibs, they want to be left alone to crack on. The Talibs are hated by most populations, villages and towns as they enforce unwanted, outdated laws, operate protection rackets, steal children to sell, murder rape and rob. No they will side with the Talibs, but not through choice, and they never have or had a choice!

I think the Afghan people have always had a choice, that's why nobody has ever been able to properly conquer them. I remember the taliban being hailed as heroes booting out the soviet puppet government. I remember them clamping down on poppy production because they didn't think it was right that their crops were killing western kids. We have been there long enough to have allowed a lot of people to have had a relatively free education, these people will now be in their late teens, hopefully that generation will be able to do something. At the end of the day it is their country they can do what they want with it.

to mps their deaths are just numbers. they dont care, RIP LADS.

more brave men killed and for what ,the afgans dont want us there, get the lads out bring them home now, and for all the people who say bringing them out would dishonor the memories of the lads that have fallen , allowing more to die, the ones who have given their lives would not want more of their comrades , to lose lives for nothing.

And those that took us to war in the first place, should be tried for oversteping the boundry of democratic government, as at the time i think 54% of the population were against war.
