Tony Blair: World Without Religion Would Be One Of 'Tragedy And Disaster'

Blair

Former prime minister Tony Blair has defended religion, warning that a world without faith would be one on a path to "tragedy and disaster".

The ex-PM, who converted to Catholicism after he left office in 2007, said he believed that the sense of something "bigger and more important" than you was "deeply important" for the health of society.

"For a long period of time, what people thought was that as society became more developed and as we became more prosperous, that faith would be relegated, that it would become a kind of relic of the past - what kind of ignorant people do but not what civilised, educated people do," he said.

"I think a world without faith would be a world on the path to tragedy and disaster, I really believe that."

He added: "What is the essence of our faith besides all the things we believe, certainly as Christians, about Jesus Christ and his place in our lives?

"It is also fundamentally a belief that there is something bigger and more important than you, that you are not the only thing that matters, that there is something that is greater and transcendent.

"I think that essential obligation of humility for humanity is deeply important.

"It is what allows us to make progress, it is what keeps us from ideology or thought processes that then treat human beings as if they were secondary to some political purpose."

Blair was speaking to around 4,000 people at the Royal Albert Hall in London at a conference on leadership organised by the Holy Trinity Brompton Church.

Blair pal'd around with Bush.

Blair of the Downing Street Memo.

Blair of the Bush lapdog, taking the world into an unnecessary and illegal war.

Now he's making money on the speaking circuit "promoting" god!

What a joke! Who cares!

he thinks spouting religion will help him . but . . . . it didn't help Macbeth and it won't help him

"World WITH religion IS one of tragedy and disaster!"

Can't even get his headline right.

But what can one expect from a political thief and lying warmonger.

Thief because he stole the Labour Party, and liar because he has bathed in the dubious glory of the hype about the non-existent WMD's he affirmed were there in Iraq, as he and his religious bedmate Dubbya Bush bamboozled our nations into an unnecessary military involvement that cost innumerable lives.

Then, as though to demonstrate his care and feeling for the people he had conned into giving him the reins of power, he threw in the towel and moved off into the speechifying tours, that rapidly turned him into a millionaire. What price his devout nature thereafter?,

Now he's a spokesman for the religious 'right', how can we believe his veracity, or any statement that attempts to justify the curse of religion, by this headline statement, which is the direct opposite of what is the truth. and which has been ever since the first man forced his family friends and neighbours to look to the unexplained and give credence to it being perpetrated by a non existent deity

Like the world isn't on that path already and that religion isn't the cause in the first place! The big three religions of the middle east are the cause of all the hatred there! Buddhism seems to be the only big one with no axe to grind ! The catholic church is so backward when it comes to morals and women's issues! The hypocrisy fostered by the pope when it comes to matters of wealth of the Vatican and the needs of the poor! The lies told about aids and HIV protection by use of condoms, versus the church making medical judgement based on morals not medicine! The protection of paedophile priests by the church hierarchy is nothing but criminal! Tony Blair you live in an ivory tower of your own making and I think your religion is just a crutch to help assuage your guilt for the things you did when you were the devils friend! You brought illegal wars to your country's doors instead of fixing schools you turned them into meat grinders for fodder for bushes neo con crusades! And why? For what? Who were you trying to impress?god maybe?

F & F Scott.

Religion is responsible for more misery and wars than anything else. Religions lead to people seeing the adversaries as sub human and thus easier to kill.

I don't know how Blair could be such a deceitful liar and yet embrace religion. Hypocrite

Dr. Tony Blair, the greatest UK Prime Minister ever. The best friend of common working man. British people need leaders right him right now. This world we live in now couldn't handle a real leader like Tony Blair . They just don't make them like him anymore unfortunately!

Sarcasm ? , or have you just arrived on the planet.

You don't understand, you've got to understand that British people love him, they all love him.

To comment the tripe this warcriminal is spewing for last few years i will use some quotes
Latin proverb:
Lupus pilum mutat, non mentem. (Wolf can change his hair but not his nature) - Isn't that right Tony? But then you always operated more on the other latin proverb:
Quod licet Iovi, non licet bovi (What is allowed to the God is not allowed to the ox)

Quote from "major Kong" (of this forums) which is well suited to Tony:
“Jesus is a lot like Elvis. I love the guy, but the fans can get pretty creepy.”
MajorKong

Quote from Noam Chomsky:
Religion is based on the idea that God is an imbecile. He can’t figure these things out. If that’s what it is, I don’t want anything to do with it.

He says "It is what allows us to make progress, it is what keeps us from ideology or thought processes that then treat human beings as if they were secondary to some political purpose."

Was this meant to be a joke? albeit on us, or a very very too late Epiphany since being a roman candle pity he did'nt convert before he became PM

This world With religion is one Of tragedy And disaster. Without it, at least there'd be fewer wars.
11:05 PM on 05/14/2012
totaly agree, what a load of old clap trap that prxck spouts,in the last 200 years there have been more wars caused by religion (or at least used as an excuse for) than any thing else, had that pompas little twerp used his ability to help the people of this country instead of ensuring his own financial situation he might quite possibly be still in power, but cash was his master & the chance of increasing it by going public with his conversion to religion was irresistable, especialy after his demise in British politics & knowing the American political position & religious fanatisism that was going to be his financial salvation as has been seen,so no wonder he made this statement, which has nothing to do with his religious beliefs but his financial security, especialy when a statement like this is reported in the American press,B-LIAR is a very clever spokesman especialy when it comes to protecting his financial position,& the more publicity he gets regarding his religous position the better it is for him.

As opposed to a world WITH religion? LOL. Tell you what: I'd like to see a world without religion just to see. Can't be any worse. It would certainly be quieter without screeching pastors and finger pointing priests. Just a little less dogma, too. A lot more freedom.
