Blue Peter Moved From BBC One And Two As Children's TV Show Goes Digital

Blue Peter
One the BBC moved earlier?

Twitter went into a frenzy on Wednesday after rumours circulated that the cherished children's TV show Blue Peter was going to be axed by the BBC.

Outraged fans reacted to a tweet from The Guardian, but the BBC confirmed to The Huffington Post UK that Blue Peter is merely moving homes, and that the world's longest running TV show can still be found on CBBC.

A spokesperson for the broadcaster said: "Over the next couple of years we're going to fade out children's TV on terrestrial channels. Blue Peter will be moving to the CBBC channel."

Blue Peter airs first on CBBC at the moment, while the version shown on BBC1 is a repeat. And according to the corporation's research more 6-12 year olds are already watching the programme via the digital channel.

One fan tweeted:

❝AlfieGreen.❞ † ∇ ϟ
OH MY GOD MY CHILDHOOD IS CRUMBLING! BBC confirms plan to ditch children's shows, including Blue Peter, from BBC1 and BBC2.

And another complained:

John Graham-Cumming
We need a Blue Peter badge-holder flash mob to descend on the BBC with a sticky-backed plastic effigy of Mark Thompson. I'm in.

Children are no longer watching terrestrial channels as much according to results from a report carried out by Delivering Quality First (DQF) for the BBC trust.

“Children’s programmes are absolutely fundamental to the BBC and that is why we have protected investment in them in the light of cuts elsewhere " a spokesperson for the BBC Trust said.

"Only a very small percentage of children still solely watch these programmes on BBC One and BBC Two alone, so moving them to digital channels is merely following current viewing patterns and reflects the fact that CBeebies and CBBC will be universally available on digital TV from the end of this year.”

But what do you think? A sticky-backed plastic storm in a teacup? Or are you also outraged? Take a quick flick through views aired on Twitter and leave your view in the comments below.

Geez. What a life some must lead when the highlight of their childhood is a freakin TV show. Read a book for god's sake.

Soon all programmes will be transferred as the BBC prepares to go commercial and won't be able to afford to make new programmes. Our license fees pay for rubbish and repeats and mostly repeats of repeats of repeats. Nobody can even provide repeats of original programmes anymore. It is as though they have a small menu of programmes from which to repeat and that is it. Why move Blue Peter it has been an extremely informative and interesting programme for years. CHange for change's sake is no change at all especially when nothing inspiring is made to replace.

Have to agree - ITV shunted their childrens programmes out into the digital wilderness years ago. And what replaced them? Edited Midsomer Murders and the like. Wouldn't be so bad if ITV would ressurect Magpie to run against Blue Peter if and when this change comes about.

Blue Peter should be axed. It is a really bad programme.

Does it matter. Move with the times.
