Fernando Torres Considering Chelsea Future Over Unhappiness With Substitute Role

The Huffington Post UK  |  By Posted: Updated: 20/05/2012 17:39

Fernando Torres has hinted his future may lie away from Chelsea despite the club's Champions League glory.

The Spaniard told compatriot and journalist Guillem Balague after Saturday's final victory over Bayern Munich he is dismayed with the role he has been allocated by the club this season.

"It’s contradictory because I feel like I’m at a peak moment in my career, with more desire and hunger than I’ve felt in a long time," he told Ballague in Munich.

"But I’ve had to spend the final on the bench. It was a huge disappointment when I saw the line-up, perhaps the biggest in my life.

"This season I have felt things that I never had before. I’ve felt like they treated me in a way that I didn’t expect and not in the way that was spoken of when they signed me.

"We’ve had a lot of talks and we’ll talk about my future, because the role I’ve had this season is not for me, nor is it the one I expected to play when I came here. I’m not comfortable.

"I want them to tell me what is going to happen in the future. I’ve been through a difficult time. The worst in my career. There’s been many times when I’ve felt lost, I wasn’t sure what to do. I felt like I didn’t know where I belonged.

"I need the club to tell me what is going to happen and what sort of role I will have within the team, what my duties are and what the club expects of me. And then judge whether it is worth it."

Signed by the Blues for £50m from Liverpool in January, Torres didn't score his first goal for the club until his 15th game against West Ham United.

This season, he went a day shy of five months without a goal and has only struck in the Premier League on seven occasions during his 16 months with the west London side.

The 28-year-old scored 11 goals in 2011/12, including the memorable semi-final winner against Barcelona and a hat-trick against QPR five days later, but he has been marginalised by the prowess of Didier Drogba.

Drogba, 34, scored the winner in the FA Cup final against Liverpool and sealed the club's first ever European Cup conquest from the spot-kick at the weekend, having equalised in normal time.

Torres had actually volunteered to take one of the five penalties in the shootout, but was overlooked by manager Roberto di Matteo, much to his visible disgust.

But with a Drogba departure feasible in the summer as the club refuse to grant him a two-year extension, Torres is believed to be set for the striker's role next term in the Ivorian's absence, making the timing of his quotes baffling.

Should have stayed at Liverpool.....

Although, to be fair to both Chelsea and Liverpool, 'auld Nando is making much the same noises as he was when leaving Merseyside..."not what I was told when I signed..." etc. etc.

he was on the bench because he wasn't playing well, especially in the premier league matches. he certainly didn't show he was worth the price they paid for him. chelsea had a rough year, and a lot to overcome with avb's management and subsequent departure. there was only room for teamwork. that's what helped them take home the fa cup and win uefa. there wasn't room for torres ego.. maybe he should learn from the situation.

Hang on, it was only a few months ago he was saying his confidence was at an all time low, how could he feel hungrier & at his peak? It's him being contradictory. Nevermind Torres, just revel in the jubilation and make sure next season is your best, it maybe down to you the club will seek to retain the Cup.

Torres hasn't played well since he came to Chelsea. When given a chance, he missed so many opportunities. He lacked form and confidence. Let's see if he makes the starting team for Spain next month; if he plays well, then this quote will make sense, "It’s contradictory because I feel like I’m at a peak moment in my career, with more desire and hunger than I’ve felt in a long time,"

18 months ago, Torres was playing for a team built around his style of play. Liverpool acquired unselfish & skilled players to feed Torres' striking skills.
He demanded a transfer on the final day of the transfer window. His timing was devastating to a club and fans who idolized "the boy from sunny Spain".
Enjoy your money, greedy man!

I guess old nando really does walk alone now...can't believe he just won the champions league and the first thing he does....have a sulk with a journo.

What a joke. He spends so long doing absolutely nothing & playing the worst form of his career at Chelsea & the entire time the fans have his back, saying he'll come good, saying he'll be worth it. Now he's scored a few goals he thinks he's god's gift to the club. No player is bigger than the club, and with comments like these Torres will lose that fan goodwill in a heartbeat.

Who the hell is going to fork out 50 million pounds for him. He's not worth it.

If he has a good european championship, manchester city could buy him. or they could quite easily sell at a loss. Probably time he went to Barcelona anyway. I always wind my son up by calling him "typical torres". As Spain's first match is against Italy maybe di matteo didn't play him deliberately so he didn't get any match practice. Not sure if Villa has recovered properly so maybe torres will be their main striker. He was playing well and looked quite sharp in the final, but other players have given more and deserve their place in the Chelsea team ahead of Torres at the moment.
