Man Dies After Falling 40ft Off Jersey Cliff

A pensioner has been killed in a cliff fall while on holiday in Jersey, police said today.

Peter Scurr, 69, from Southampton, and an unnamed 65-year-old woman are believed to have plunged 40ft (12.2m) from a rock face on the Railway Walk above Mont Les Vaux in St Aubin on to the concrete roof of German wartime tunnels.

Mr Scurr was pronounced dead on arrival at hospital.

The holidaymakers fell from the Railway Walk onto the roof of a former German tunnel

The woman suffered serious injuries in the incident, which took place at around 5pm, and was flown to Southampton General Hospital for further treatment.

A spokesman for the States of Jersey Police said: "Officers are treating the death as a tragic accident and are now preparing a file for the Deputy Viscount (coroner)."

The four-mile-long Railway Walk links St Aubin with Corbiere. The line was built in 1884 and used during the Second World War by the Germans to transport military materials and troops during their occupation.

Some of the tunnels were used as ammunition stores and barracks.

The injured woman is due to be flown to Southampton General Hospital
