Concrete, washing lines and a car wreck are not the first images that spring to mind when thinking of the Hampton Court Palace Flower Show.

But one designer has created just that as part of his "urban oasis" display at the event.

Groundwork UK's 'Urban Oasis' features police tape in front of an abandoned, ruined car atop a pile of dirt and rubble, creating a jarring contrast to the rows of neat hanging baskets at a display next door.

Gardens specially created for the event have been created over the course of three weeks all vying for prizes in a series of categories.

The Countess of Wessex wandered through the varied gardens on Monday, prior to its official opening on Tuesday.

The Countess was able to wander through gardens of wicker-like statues, peacock-themed topiary and the aforementioned urban wreckage to get a sneak preview of the displays.

She was able to meet Matthew Childs, who designed his garden 'Light at the End of the Tunnel', inspired by the 7/7 bombings, in which he was badly injured.

Other groups submitting gardens include charities, including one built in association with Southend Youth Offending Service and another by the Jordan Tourism Board.

Close to 40 gardens have been created for this year's show, which has been running annually since 1990, and are eligible for a litany of awards, such as Best Show Garden, Best Conceptual Garden, Best Exhibit and even an award for the best vegetable garden exhibitor.
