Danny Welbeck today inked a new four-year deal with Manchester United as the club bid to retain a homegrown core in its squad.

Welbeck, who has scored 17 goals from 64 appearances since making his debut for United in September 2008, enthused how: "Playing for United is all I’ve ever wanted to do". Sir Alex Ferguson also nostalgically made reference to the fact the Mancunian has been with his boyhood team since the age of eight, and the 21-year-old's promise was captured as long as nine years ago.

A 12-year-old Welbeck featured in the Play Like Champions DVD, released in 2003, learning from Ruud van Nistelrooy and Roy Keane. Cristiano Ronaldo, recently signed by the club, also crops up but his limited English scuppered the possibility of him tutoring Welbeck in the art of stepovers.
