Braga Vs Manchester United Champions League: The Red Devils In Portugal (PICTURES)

Manchester United play their fifth Portuguese side in European competition as they take on Braga in tonight's Champions League clash, continuing a love affair with the Iberian clubs.

Since their first trek to Portugal in 1966 when George Best scored twice in a stunning 5-1 victory over two-time European Cup winners Benfica, supporters have have enjoyed fond memories of trips to Portugal and endured some frightening ones too.

Wins at Benfica in 2006, Sporting Lisbon the following year and a superb 1-0 win away to Porto rank highest, but there is a darker side which few remember.

The treatment of travelling United fans in Oporto in 1997 is one of the most shocking English football fans have experienced abroad. Over 30 were hospitalised, several were shot, many batoned and many more were tear gassed. There was also a near-Hillsborough crush at the stadium gate.

Away from the unsettling incidents in 1997, here's a gallery of United in Portugal...
