A hit-and-run driver who left four schoolchildren lying injured after he mounted a pavement and careered into them was being hunted by police tonight.

The crash happened after the dark grey BMW 3 series left Imberhorne Lane, East Grinstead, West Sussex, just after 10.30am this morning.

The car struck a lamp-post before colliding with the group of three teenage girls and a boy and then ploughing into a hedge, Sussex Police said.

As the children lay injured on the ground, the BMW made off, and was found abandoned nearby.

Two men were seen to walk from the car, prompting police to appeal for help in finding them.

The children suffered cuts and bruises. Three were taken to the East Surrey Hospital in Redhill, Surrey, for treatment and observation.

Sergeant Mark Baker, of Sussex Police, said: "The teenagers were just outside the school entrance when the car mounted the pavement and struck them.

"They fortunately have suffered only minor injuries but are shaken by the incident. The car was found abandoned in Fellwater Court nearby where two men were seen to walk from it.

"I would urge the men to come forward."

The suspects are described as white, with one wearing a black hoodie and the other a dark top.

Anyone with information is asked to call Sussex Police on 101, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
