Bizarre 999 Calls Tweeted By West Midlands Police To Highlight Time-Wasting

Help! I Can't Get Served At The Drive-Thru

West Midlands Police is hosting a 24-hour tweetathon of bizarre, ridiculous and trivial 999 calls in an attempt to make people think before they contact the emergency services.

Highlights include a woman who had forgotten her laptop password, a man who couldn't get served in a McDonalds drive-thru and a man who called 999 to ask for the non-emergency number, 101.

Chief Inspector Sally Holmes, of West Midlands Police, said in a statement: "These calls are ridiculous and it doesn't end just there.

Emergency call centres are incredibly busy. West Midlands Police receives over 1,500 999 calls a day

"We regularly receive calls about lost property, people asking for directions and from people who have been denied entry to a nightclub.

"Each call often takes minutes to deal with as staff have to clarify the situation. It might not sound like much but, if someone is trying to get through to report a genuine life or death emergency, then a minute is a very long time to wait."

Police are keen to stress the importance of the non-emergency number, 101, when reporting minor incidents.

The feed, @WMPolice, can be followed from 7am Friday to 7am Saturday.
