It's official: games are bigger than music.

According to new figures, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 was officially the biggest entertainment release of the year in 2012, selling 1.2 million more copies than the biggest music album.

Activision's shooter sold 2.7 million copies, followed by 2.6 million copies of FIFA 13.

Other games which did well include Assassin's Creed 3 (886,000), Halo 4 (753,000), Hitman Absolution (571,000), Just Dance 4 (562,000) and Far Cry 3 (540,000).

By contrast the top-selling music albun, 'Our Version of Events' by Emile Sande, sold just 1.7 million copies. The top home DVD, The Dark Knight Rises, sold 1.69m copies.

Overall it was a bad year for entertainment sales, according to the chart released by the Entertainment Retail Association (ERA).

Sales were down 12% in the figures which compile movie releases, games, DVDs and music.

Sales of top 40 releases were down 25% compared to 2011.

ERA Director General Kim Bayley said in a statement:

"2012 was a tough year for entertainment due to a number of factors, but this sharp 25% shrinkage in sales of the biggest titles suggests that the quality of releases was at least partly to blame. Luckily 2013 has got off to a good start with Skyfall already selling more than 2m copies - way ahead of last year's biggest-selling video,The Dark Knight Rises."
