Malene Birger graduated from the Danish Design School in 1989. She started out working for Swedish brand Marc O'Polo, then co-founded the label Day Birger et Mikkelsen with her business partner Keld Mikkelsen in 1997 and in 2003 her own label was born: By Malene Birger.
Malene's slick Scandi style was a huge success during Copenhagen's Autumn/Winter 2013 Fashion Week, after which she teamed up with luxe e-tailer My Wardrobe to celebrate her 10th birthday collection. MyDaily asked Malene what she'd say to fashion students facing their final shows...
What advice/ words of wisdom would you offer to students about to graduate?
The fashion world is the only creative business with NO breaks, constant deadlines and new collections. If you want to go into it, be prepared to give up, a huge portion of your private life for many years. Believe in yourself, stay focused, follow your heart, don't compromise.
You will mostly have to take all the responsibility, be ready to take it. Nobody will take it for you - and remember to enjoy the ride!
