President Viktor Yanukovych's Mezhyhirya estate, deserted by security, is now a playground for activists, curious tourists and families come to survey the abandoned opulence.
Ukraine's border police blocked Yanukovych from flying to Russia and the embattled president is thought to be 'hiding' in the country's east, according to the newly elected parliament speaker.
"He tried to take a plane to Russia but he was blocked in doing so by border police. He is currently hiding somewhere in the Donetsk region," Oleksandr Turchyno was quoted as saying by Ukrainian news agency Interfax.
Yanukovych is now wanted by police for mass murder, the acting interior minister Arsen Avakov posted on his Facebook profile earlier on Monday.
The Telegraph reported that locals think Yanukovych may try to escape by sea, and had been seen at a yacht club owned by his son, with a yacht leaving in the middle of the night.
However, the beleaguered politician is not believe to have been onboard, and to have left the club by car.
Ukraine's parliament voted to temporarily hand the president's powers to speaker Oleksandr Turchinov, a close ally of former prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko.Suggest a correction
