Nail Trends From New York Fashion Week 2014

Five days into New York Fashion Week and it looks like nail art - the OTT kind - is over.

Instead, short, square shapes, simple two-tone designs and glossy colours are replacing overdone styles favoured at the shows in the past.

In fact, the look for Autumn/Winter 2014 is turning out to be a lot more classic than ever before. Half-moon manicures in contrasting shades have been making a big comeback - high-shine black and nudes were paired together at both the Giuletta and Rolando Santana shows.

However - there's been more than just neat nails. The marble-effect seen at Creatures of the Wind's A/W 14 show was effortlessly perfect.

Beauty blogger Pretty Connected revealed Katie Hughes, Butter London's global colour ambassador, used an "orange wood stick to swirl the colours together" before pressing the stick-on nails into water.

Hughes used a mix of neutrals and metallics in Yummy Mummy, Diamond Geezer, Posh Bird, Pearly Queen and Billy No Mates. The result? Subtle but shimmering.

And if you fancy trying a bit of both trends? Look to the electric blue nails seen backstage at Opening Ceremony. The diagonal flashes are easy to do (medical tape is our secret) and although the style is simple, it's effective. Now that's the kind of nail art we like...
